Octopus Reacts to Broom - Episode 7

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

For the seventh episode of our Octopus reacts series, we selected an everyday object with which most of our viewers are probably quite familiar with. The trusty broom!
Our octopus investigated this strange-looking, long object thoroughly, from top to bottom. You'll notice a lot more color changes and flashes than in previous Octopus Reacts episodes. This was evident during the entire course of the experiment. We initially thought it was due to the bright pink color of the broom. We replaced it with a white broom and again the octopus displayed lots of color changes and flashes when faced with the new broom.
We hope you enjoy today's episode and, as always, look forward to hearing your thoughts. If you have an idea for a future episode, please let us know in the comments section.

@@mygirldarby That's exactly how I feel about animal documentaries! I only watch if I know for certain there is no death, abuse, etc. Same goes for movies. But I did watch My Octopus Teacher, and I'm glad I did because I learned so much and it was beautiful....but there is a traumatic scene with a shark & the octopus (I muted and closed my eyes bc I couldn't bear to watch). And then there is an incredibly sad death, and I cried. But the end is so hopeful and the message is of hope and friendship. It's a great film but I can never watch it again😰😭

There has never been an attack on a human except at SeaWorld when they’re frustrated by being kept in captivity.

Shane’s even put a small octopus in his mouth so the little one could taste & feel that part of a human. He came right out, unharmed, ready to ride some more on the beautiful swimming girls. These Octos are very flirtatious! You should do some stuff with humans!! Though I loved your cuttlefish one the best so far.

I have been watching some of the lab experiences and find them fascinating for breeding patterns, like coloring, and movement. Octopus are wonderful and very intelligent. I have to say, I did not know that females ate males some times. YIKES! Aggressive little things. You can never tell with aggression, whether females/males, they sometimes fall in Love, so cute, but can also become very aggressive for a reason, but at this time it is not known by me why. I wonder if they have moods. Never predict before it occurs so Science says. And I love the Brush experiment, because to me that just proves animals are so curious, so loving, so adaptive, and they often really do adapt nicely even to tiles in their environment. He seemed to move right in with tiles, and all. I find animals so fascinating to watch. Pure sweetness, pure instinctual, and far more intelligent that we can possibly imagine with adaptations. Sometimes I think animals with natural adaptations are smarter than humans with a brain in adaptations. Not meant to be sarcastic but an observational perspective. It makes you wonder about our self sabotaging brain, and does it benefit us sometimes????? Fascinating. Have they got the same DNA RNA and protein cells as humans, and how different are they in cells? The other thing is although they are a different form, do you think that their brain is capable of feeling, anything more than anger as he snatched his tank filter back from you? I assume this to be territorial. So that assumes aggressiveness and territorial. But do they also have other emotions and moods. It appears from color change they might have feelings of Love or attachement, or attraction, which would assume emotions, feelings, moods, Wow! How exciting. That also assumes a bigger brain, dendrites, and maybe if lucky even a bit of plasticity. Because I would consider that as logical. Thank you for your research and your videos of share. It really is a fascinating subject and group of observations. Carolyn D Hogarth Osoyoos Canada

Would he be more or less excited by a wooden and straw broom? Does the shape and size have anything to do with it, i.e., would a small whisk or butler broom give him concern?

I'd also like to see them figure out the floating penny hologram parabolic dish illusion. also, do they feel the effect of magnets? I hoped for much more with the music experiment, so maybe I'm hoping too much here. thanks for the vids.

Let the octopus loose. You have no right to keep it captive. They are meant to be free not held captive, unable to fulfill their purpose in life. You take away their ability to choose a suitable mate and thereby thwart millions of years of natural selection. This should be a crime.
