OctoPi 2021: OctoPrint + Raspberry Pi! Super Simple Setup (Mac & Win)
Ғылым және технология
New! UPDATED for 2021! See how to install OctoPrint on a Raspberry Pi using OctoPi, an SD card image with EVERYTHING you need ALREADY INSTALLED! We're doing it from a Mac, but the process is exactly the same for Windows 10.
Once the Raspberry Pi is set up, we'll connect it to the printer. Then we'll send a G-code file to it, and start a print!
Are you tired of doing the SD Card Shuffle every time you want to print? You know the drill:
• Walk over to the printer
• Grab the SD card
• Walk back to the computer
• Insert the SD card
• Drag a G-code file to the SD card
• Eject the SD card
• Remove the SD card from the computer
• Walk over to the printer
• Insert the SD card into the printer
• Use the printer's control panel to select your file
• Print
Printing with OctoPrint is refreshingly easy:
• Drag G-Code file to OctoPrint in your web browser
• Click Print

You can always be assured that Bryan's videos are going to be 100% informative. What a legend.
this is just a tip: at 0:10 you don't have to say "stick around and we'll get into it right after this", just to show the spinning cube for 3 seconds, then you don't have to say "hi welcome back". i would just cut that whole thing out and get right to the chase.
Brian, this is by far the best Octopi installation walkthrough on KZread to-date. I followed along and it worked perfectly. Thanks for taking the time to put this together and for being a great presenter/instructor.
Bryan, I'm new to the Ender 3 and 3D printing but you have quickly become my go to for videos on anything I want to learn. No matter what I am trying to do, I always check to see if you have made a video because you do an excellent job of explaining while still being concise and without repeating the same thing over and over. If I need something repeated, that is what rewind is for and I really appreciate the way you explain in just the right amount of detail without beating the dead horse. My Raspberry Pi arrives today and I can't wait to follow the steps of this video and am confident it will work exactly as you have shown it!
your instructions were much more clear than many other videos, thank you! this is one project that actually worked for my first try.
Hey Bryan. I was given a Wanhao duplicator i3 Plus clone in 2018. I must say that your videos both helped me to get started and inspired me to upgrade my printer and get printing. I have enjoyed your videos over the years and I just wanted to thank you for everything!
Hey Bryan thanks a ton. Seeing this made me revisit the idea of Octoprint which I had never set up before. I got mine working quickly after seeing this on a Pi3B+ However... I needed to configure my WLAN using raspi-config as the initial edit of the supplicant did not actauly engage WiFi. Now I am printing remotely and feel all spiffy being untethered from Pronterface. Thank you for being clear and concise as usual.
Thanks for the help, Bryan. This is by far the best Octoprint how-to for Mac users I've found so far.
Kind of like the comment below from Anonomister, I want to say, this is one of the best, most under rated channels on KZread. Your explanations and reviews and “how to” stuff are all perfectly done in a way that any 3D printing beginner or seasoned pro can understand.
I watched this video in an attempt to learn something about Raspberry Pi. WOW. It seems too easy. I will have to watch again (maybe several more times) and get this moving forward. Thank You.
Thank you so much. Wouldn't have been able to set this up without such a clear, concise tutorial.
Just used this to install Octoprint on my ender 3 pro with a pi3. Worked flawlessly. Though I get an under voltage error. I have a better psu, just need to sort where I put it. I may power it from a buck convertor off of the printer power supply board. I did the under the printer screen case for the Ender 3/ Pro. I realised after I print it that I would not have access to the sd card so I bought a little 6in sd card extension and cut a hole in the back of the housing and pushed the end of the extension through and glued it in. Now i have easy access to the card, if needed. I just subscribed as I have some other mods to install. All metal hot end, dual drive extruder, filament runout, CR- Touch. Have had all these parts and more for a long time. Now I have a 'GO TO' for proper instructions. Thanks Bryan.
Hi Bryan, Thank you for walking me through the set up. Your instructions were very easy to follow and had me up and running in around 30 minutes. Cheers from Toronto!
Thanks for such a great and informative video! I actually used it to go step by step and setup my new Raspberry Pi. 4b 2 gig. Having 2 screens made it really easy to do and follow along. Well done!
Happy to see this. My Raspberry Pi comes in today for Octoprint setup. So the timing is perfect. Thanks for the great walk thru.

@@BV3D yeah when you look back it is crazy how long ago a video was. To us creators we remember those like it was yesterday.
I've been using your guides for pretty much every upgrade I've done on my Ender 3 Pro that I got for Christmas! I already got Octopi set up but came here to leave a like and comment to boost traffic! It'd be great to hear what your opinions are in terms of best plugins and a tutorial on setting up a USB camera wouldn't go amiss if you get the time but I understand you can't just cater to every KZread comment 😁 Thanks for what you do!
Thank you so much. I have been trying to get my Raspberry Pi and Octoprint working for nearly a week, (I am definitely "tech-challenged". I have watched loads of videos and read so much, but they all seemed to leave out information that a complete beginner needs. I now have a Raspberry Pi that I can CONNECT to, a connection to my 3d printer, AND a camera that works!!!! Thank you. I'll leave it a few days and then try to connect a touch screen, that should be fun lol.
What good timing of a video. I just got done with 2 days of printing pi enclosure and camera mounts. Will be setting up Octopi tomorrow probably.
Bryan you really helped me out when I built my Ender 3 V2 on 10/21/2021! I went from sealed box to printed Dog Benchie in just 4 hours! I probably would have only been 3 hours but I was assembling it after midnight haha. Now I am hoping and looking forward you helping me learn about OctoPi!
THANK U for making this turtorial and explaining to me how i do it. Ive looked at alot of turtorials but this one was the easiest to follow so now to go and try it for myself
Bravo Bryan...this made my octopi install easy as 🥧😅 I appreciate your time and dedication to the 3d printer community🤘✊
Thks Brian Your tutorials are concise and easy to follow. Many thanks
Bryan, thank you for this video. You really taught me a lot about octoprint/pis. I followed along step by step and got everything going! Thank you so much for making this video!
Bryan, You have great videos, thank you for doing so well with this video! I want to add a note to any users watching this video and still having issues connecting via browser, be sure you are not connected to a VPN. It took me a few minutes to realize I was connected to my VPN and once disconnecting I had no issue connecting. Hope this comes useful to some.
As an alternative to Balena Etcher, the Raspberry Pi Foundation offers their own imaging software which can install various Pi OSes as well as custom images, in this case OctoPi.

It also allows you to set the wifi name and password directly in the program before flashing.
Also very very important. When you connect the Raspberry Pi to the printer be sure to use a data cable! Not all cables are for data transfer. But every data cable is capable of power transfer. Also use a high quality one or you will waste a lot of time figuring out what's causing problems. Great video as always! I have Octopi running since the first day and it's still running smooth on my Raspberry Pi 3b+ with tons of plugins for my Ender 3 V2.
Thank you! Great video! Really wanted to start dipping into RPi's but never really had a good reason until this randomly showed up on my feed.
somehow I have everything needed for this just laying around. lololol your tutorials are amazing for beginners. very thorough. YOU ROCK!
Wow you are amazing instructor. Thank you for the clear and understandable Octoprint instructions. I wish I had you as a teacher in school!
Realy like your video Bryan. Super clean, super clear. Keep it up!
Incredibly well explained! it couldn't be better! thanks and keep it up bryan

I've been nervous about going the octopi route until I saw this video. I use a mac so it was really nice to see the configuration on something familiar. Saving a few bucks to get a Raspberry Pi now.
another life saving video. You're making this too easy. Thanks again for another fantastic, concise tutorial. Subscribed.
Very good. Thx for doing this. MK3S #2 is on order and I will be doing octoprint soon.
You have some of the best how to videos out there. thank you.
So easy with the right teacher. Thank you Bryan.
All of the instructions worked on Ubuntu Linux 20.10 exactly as shown in the video--including downloading & running Balena Etcher. Thank you!
Truly awesome easy to follow video. Thank you so much for taking the time!
Thank you so much. I have been fighting with this for hours.
Very concise, professional, and friendly video. Very well done and i thank you for the very useful tutorial.

A very informative video. The only thing I would suggest as someone who once worked as a computer studies teacher is that you ask the student to check they are on a machine which meets the system requirements needed to use a 3D printer, in "About this Mac". In my experience, it may be something such as Mac OS Tiger! Also with the Raspberry Pi, you need to make it clear that an R-Pi 4 is the requirement, and also that the 3D printer has a USB socket and supports Octoprint. My experience of teaching people about computers is that if you teach anybody anything, then they'll try to do it, but they will try to use the machine which sitting there on the desk, not realizing it is out-of-date! Thanks for taking the trouble to make and upload this video. Keep up the good work!
This was such an awesome video. Everything worked out really well. Thanks so much.
Thank you for the guide. Quick and simple.
This was a great video, thank you for this!
Thanks for the info! Great video!

Hi Vidhya! Thanks, I'm glad you like them! 😃
Thank you for this awesome video!
Your videos are very good, thank you!
This a great walk through, if you're on a Mac. On Window 10, it is not so smooth. Once you get the image flashed, you have to figure out how to mount the disk to edit the configuration file, and this is not so easy. Still, tons of great info!
I'm shocked that you don't have hundreds of thousands of subscribers I like your videos very detailed good information and definitely good clean fun to play around my family
Wow this dude is awesome, lost me at 11:32 though so I’m a little stuck but I’m sure this guy is explaining it right!
Great video loads of help, had lots of problems connecting to the wi-fi tho, was using a pi 3 B+ had run an ethernet cable to the pi and do an update through the config files. Just in case other people are having problems. Carry on with filling my head with 3D printing ideas.
There is a trap. If you later want to use a camera with Octoprint then you should also use the octopi-buster file. With octopi-bullseye, Raspberry has changed the camera driver. I hope that the camera software will be ready for it. Cool by the way. The PI 4 often runs very hot. A heat sink or fan helps keep the CPU cool.
Soooo nice to see someone using Mac make these videos :) they are always windows!
Thank you, Great Video!
Thanks! It helped me a lot

@@BV3D That's exactly how I learned too. No, I still mostly go the OctoPi image route, though I also use the cli approach too, just so I can practice it.
I can't imagine 3D printing without OctoPi. Also the community Marlin firmware for my Ender 3v2 interfaces with the OctoPi so I have some control of the OctoPi directly from the printer controls. Comes in handy if I'm at the printer and need to cancel a job right away. But modelling, slicing, and printing can all be done while sitting at my computer desk. I keep the printer in another room.
So glad for this video. It’s the only one that said to remove the # in the WiFi section 🤦🏾♂️

Bryan, really good video and explanation. Could you do a review of the plugins? There are so many and new ones come out all of the time. The information on them is not very informative, so an expert review would be helpful.

Another great vid, thanks for breaking it down and making it easy to follow! What do I need to do differently or additionally if I have the Bigtreetech TFT35 touchscreen display, so I can control the printer with either the touchscreen or Octoprint?
I have the same Leg lamp 🎄 👍🏽
Bryan, I just wanted to drop a comment to say thank you for the fantastic instructional video. I watched your video to set up my Ender 3 V2 and now am up and running with Octoprint thanks to you! Keep these videos coming please!
Well done Bryan
If you want to avoid the SSH connection and other command line stuff, you can set the location in the WiFi supplicant file where you set your WiFi creds. The machine name can be set later in the GUI also. This means that immediately after the pi first boots and connects to your network you can find it’s IP address using a WiFi utility or the devices list in your router. Just open that address in your browser and continue the setup there.

Thanks for the easy to follow and simple tutorial to setting up Octoprint. I think I might get a version 3B for my Ender 3. Been using the SD card for a few months now ... but having to take it in and out and walking back and forth to my printer is getting old now lol. And this way I get to keep an eye on my printer from another room or smth. Is it possible to hook up any-old webcam via USB to it or does it really have to be a specific camera for the Raspberry? Thanks again for the vid Bryan!

Hi Lance! I realize this is nearly a year late, but THANK YOU very much! KZread rolled out this Applaud feature (now called Super Thanks) but, until very recently, didn't give creators an easy way to find them. Now they have, and I wanted to say I am grateful for your support!
Thanks!
keep up the good work
Great videos. Just found your channel and subscribed. Thanks for the information. Also, you mentioned you are in the Midwest i think…what part?
Great Video, clear concise and to the point. Easy to follow (had Octoprint up and running in 10 minutes) Now I have a problem: Environment: Pi 3 B+, Up to date latest packages Endor 3 V2 (.22 board) running Marlin BL Touch code Problem: As soon as the V2 starts printing OctoPi drops connection and I can't monitor anything. Thoughts?
Great video, very helpful in setting up Octoprint. However, one thing not addressed in anyone's Octoprint setup video is the fact that the Raspberry Pi uses a dynamic IP address by default. If you shut your Pi down and restart it later, there is an excellent chance the IP address will be changed and you'll (1) have to figure out what the new IP address is, and (2) modify your Cura printer profile so Cura can find the Octoprinter. Changing the Pi from a Dynamic to Static IP isn't particularly difficult but it can be a little intimidating to someone not used to editing Config files. Could you make a short video walking through the procedure to change the Pi to default to Static IP, both via Windows and Mac? Thanks.
I just watched again ...... Thanks.
Your videos have been very helpful and appreciated. One question: If using a Raspberry Pi and Octoprint, is an installed Micro SD card used to establish the Z offset for a BLTouch still required?
Hi Bryan, new to 3d printing and I am finding your videos to be very informative as well as entertaining. Keep up the great work !!!! I have a question regarding OctoPi. I am currently running Jyers UI. If I install the OctoPi software, will it make the Jyers UI useless ?? My understanding is the OctoPi and Octoprint will send commands to the printer to complete a print job. Am I correct ???
Followed this guide to the letter....and all up in working with Octoprint. Thanks Bryan! I've read I can have multiple OS on the same SD card? Do I simply use the disc image you used with say Berry Boot? Thanks!
Just a update you can use Raspberry Pi Imager to download and flash octopi and other os directly into a sd card without downloading the image and the etcher separately and also edit wifi configuration directly using the advance settings in the imager without touching any files in sd card
Thank you so much for the video made it so simple! I was wondering you have the 2gb and the 4gb listed in the products would either work or do I need the 4gb? Thanks so much!
Installed with no mistakes, what a great 'how to' video. Question, I have a Pi 3b+ and can power it from the USB on my laptop. Will it power OK from the USB on an ender 3 v2 without a separate supply?
@18:42 why the approx Total Print Time: 22 minutes is the half time of the Print Time: 00:35:04 (+ left 3 min = 38min).. it’s because the temperature rising before and falling after take around 16min?? ..thanks for your great detailed informations!!
Hi Bryan, just getting started in 3 D printing and I am finding your videos very helpful. I like the filament holder you are using in this video. Do you have a link to print the one you are using? Thanks
