Octopath Traveler II The Best JRPG of 2023!
Ойындар
Final Fantasy 16 isn't here yet so as far as I'm concerned Octopath Traveler II is the best JRPG of the year! I played Octopath Traveler II on the Nintendo Switch but it's also available on Playstation! In my review of Octopath Traveler II we discuss Octopath's gameplay, Octopaths OST, and more. Thank you for watching my review of Octopath Traveler II for the Nintendo Switch!
" A brand-new entry in the OCTOPATH TRAVELER series, the first installment of which was initially released in 2018 and sold over 3 million copies worldwide. It takes the series’ HD-2D graphics, a fusion of retro pixel art and 3DCG, to even greater heights. In the world of Solistia, eight new travelers venture forth into an exciting new era. Where will you go? What will you do? Whose tale will you bring to life? Every path is yours to take. Embark on an adventure all your own."

Thank you all for watching! I still got an Eastward vid, and a Persona 4 vid in the chamber. ALSO, my review of Tears of the Kingdom is coming! Now everyone say a prayer for me that I get an early access code for Final Fantasy XVI as well. Hahaha. If so you can expect a review on that. Otherwise I'll continue chipping away at the backlog. We got Fire Emblem Engage, Final Fantasy V, SMT 5, SMT: Strange Journey, SMT Persona 3, Eiyuden Chronicles Rising, and including some streaming games like KATAMARI BABY!!! And the Bayonetta storybook game~! Lots of games, and of course, not enough time to play them all! Please support me here: www.patreon.com/PelvicGaming

Do you believe in god? Is it more because of this game?
OT2 is one of the best RPGs ever, such a masterpiece in every category 🙏🏼
Out of all the Travlers across both games, honestly Agnea really is my favorite amongst all of them. Sure her story may be simple and low stakes, but thats to its benefit imo. Not every single story NEEDS to be filled with high stakes and drama, and as a huge RPG fan I've really come to appreciate more lighthearted tales nowadays with Agnea's story probably being one of the best examples. She's just a village girl with a dream, and she wants to bring smiles to the world one person at a time. Most of all she isn't afraid to get her hands dirty to make those smiles happen, her steadfast determination in wanting to make everyone happy is honestly really admirable and I love her story the most because of it. I don't even think I speak from protag bias when I say that, Agnea honestly really exemplifies to me that not every story has to be so high stakes to be good. It's okay to just have a chill story that doesn't take itself extremely seriously or anything. Sure there are plenty of better stories out there full of drama, but its the more down to earth stories that I've come to appreciate so much now. Edit: It pleased me immensely to see that you enjoyed Agnea. She's very hit or miss for people cause of her low stakes story, so it made me very happy to hear that ya liked her!

Stange, I generally hear that it's people's least favrorite. Partially because it feels malplaced and so disconnected from everything else. To me, Partitio did a better job of balancing a generally more lighthearted tone, positive energy, integration into the narrative and game, while also giving the sense that Partitio legit made the world a better place. While Agnea's was a bit too samey and one one throughout. I can see why some people like it, but to me it felt out of place.

So glad that pretty much everyone loves OT2. I also love that it's multiplatform, meaning even more people will know how great this series is. It now being at a million copies sold is just icing on the cake!
Game of the year and best RPG of all time for me. Contrary to you Castti is my favourite story in OT2 and surpases even Cyrus from OT1 as my favourite in the series.

My game of the year. Have to say I felt similarly as you did about Castii at first, but I thought the story went to a very moving place
I really love this game, I hope videos like this help to spread the word about it, it really is one of the best games of an already amazing year. Great review. Your favorites stories are different than mine (Castti moved me to tears in two ocations), but I liked every story, really.

THE CAMPFIRE WARMED MY HEART
I haven’t played jrpg for so long after agarest, FF series. Ever since I got my hand on Octopath 2 I never stop playing it. Music, Characters, dialogues, npcs, towns, maps, stories, jobs etc… I got hooked in. I love the game and will replay it again and again.
so glad to see you back and more often ❤
Great review! ^_^ I definitely relate to the "sometimes not jiving with a game's soundtrack until listening to it on it's own" thing. Fire Emblem Three Houses, Final Fantasy XV, Xenoblade 2 and Persona 5 were soundtracks I enjoyed but wasn't crazy about at first; listening to them on their own after completing them though, I grew to love em and appreciate them more over time. Not sure what it is; sometimes I instantly recognize a soundtrack to be a bop and tracks get stuck in my head for weeks, other times, it takes a listen through outside the context of the game itself. It's odd. 🤔

@@PelvicGaming I know! xD I've listened to the P5 OST for SO many hours since 2017. I have no idea what my past self was thinking. I'll be curious to see if the eventual P6 or the soon to be released FFXVI will be an instant bop for me or something I gradually appreciate over time 🙂
Absolutely stunning game, shot up to my favourite JRPG of all time. And Wildly overlooked! Great review thanks, making me want to listen to the soundtrack again and maybe try that one eyed mammoth option boss thing, I never figured out how to do it that one!
I started with Partitio, which I feel like is not a common choice. I really enjoyed picking up he and Agnea first though, because it gave my journey that kind of “humble beginnings” vibe and then it ramped up when I got to the darker stories of the other characters (especially those in the eastern continent). The order I acquired the characters was: Partitio > Agnea > Hikari > Castti > Ochette > Osvald > Temenos > Throné
You convinced me I need to put down TOTK for a bit and finish this game now 😅 I’m surprised the day/night system wasn’t as heavily advertised given how strongly it impacts this game. I guess in 2023 that’s not much of a novelty in games, but Octopath 2 does a lot with it. You can even switch to night mode on the title screen and hear a night version of the main theme!
I didn’t get to play the first game but saw the final boss thanks to my brother. I may have to give this a whirl while waiting for more Persona goodness. I’m so excited to try this.
I won't declare RPG of the year until Sea of Stars drops in August.

I had trouble with what I felt like was an absurd encounter rate with low level mobs that took ~60 seconds of the same routine every time for very low reward, and some busted village skills (love Agnea, and despite her low stake story that I enjoyed, the skill of “just give me thing” seemed a bit much) but I’m excited to give it another whirl!

Pelvic, is the "true ending" handled better in this game than the original? The OG game hid the true boss/ending behind obscure side missions. Is there more clarity with regards to how to access the post-game in Octopath 2?
@Apolleh

the true ending is indeed handled better. without going too deep into spoilers the games is very clear about when the final story is available. I would still recommend doing almost if not all of the sidequests prior, but it isnt actually necessary to do a specific sidequest chain this time.

Im around 75 hours in so far.. its definitely one of the best RPGs i played in a long time probably since XB2.. its wayy better then first game by a country mile but it doesnt fix a few problems like being able too switch yo party outside of a tavern!!!! Having too switch in and out 7 characters since the character you choose first is locked in yo party until endgame too level them can be a pain the ass since characters who are not in yo party gains no EXP!! But grinding is less tedious this time around for damn sure... Amazing game

I played the demo of the first game but never committed but played and finished this one and really enjoyed it, love the characters, music and battle system, also a big fan of the path action, wish more jrpgs did that, so you interact with NPC's more instead of an unimportant dialogue. One thing I wish they added was better unlockable jobs, I wasn't a fan of the few secret ones. Lastly I dont want to go into depth on this one but I really enjoyed the mystery aspect to it, I wish more jrpg did that, combining murder mystery, thriller and jrpg into one

someone mentioned below that the game got over looked. do you think it was maybe because the demo felt so similar to the first? Maybe the bad thoughts of random encounters and grinding came back for some? For my part, i love the art style so much that im currently debating hard, if i want to go at it. i definitely suffered from the grinding, random encounters and nearly hour long boss battles only to die. is it worth another 60 hours or is it just more of the same? is the art style worth such a massive undertaking? these are my question to you, and also how grindy is it in general? ps. just stumbled upon your channel. great energy, concise messaging, clear voice and subtle humor. subscribed!

Great review once again. There are just some things that I think they could have done better. The game could be more player friendly regarding the grinding (Bravely had the random battle % chosen by the player from -100% to +100% for example, BD spoiled me a bit). I'm also not a fan of how the battle system is unfair. Unlike the press turn system of smt or the bravely system of bd, everything the player can do, the enemy is able to. In octopath the battle system is one sided. Only enemies have shields to break.
@PelvicGaming
Жыл бұрын
I would LOVE if they gave us the BD system in regards to random battles. I'm with you 100% I honestly don't mind, and I believe it would make battles too easy, specifically random encounters, considering we go first, we can wipe most if not all of them out, and when they go they what? Knock off a few shield points? Yes, I'm sure it can't be reworked, but I don't mind the one-sided ness in this case.
@claudio3431
Жыл бұрын
I get what you mean, but I think that in octopath traveler the battle system is one sided in the player favor. Only you can accumulate turns and spend BP for that. Enemies dont get to do that.. and this is why they gave them shields, to try that balance that advantage that only you have. I do agree with you that BD and SMT are more even and that makes both of those games harder than octopath in general.

Overall, I loved it. However, as you alluded to in the review, after 100-plus hours, random combat turned the end of the game into a slog for me. I started to swear out loud as I waded through meaningless combat encounter after combat encounter trying to wrap up some stories when I was already over-leveled and had no need for more experience points. I was actually getting really sick of the game in the final hours until the epilogue, where I could walk around and talk to everyone I had grown to love without any more f-ing random combat encounters of having to click the action button over and over again without challenge, just drudgery. As for Castti, I could have enjoyed her story if a) the storyline about her being part of an evil organization everyone was scared to death of didn't fizzle out and b) if she didn't walk around in poison rain without any protective gear when she had a long time to prepare for it. Random thought: there was a minor sidequest involving one of the reformed villains going to hang out with the racist leader of the humans on the Beastling island and the dialogue in that was bizarrely robotic and it just seemed pointless and horrible.
I still don't understand why you have to travel so much to use your telepathy on the octopus.
