Loving the drogue shoot idea. A while back I had the idea of attaching a drogue shoot with some small weights to the wing leash that could be deployable outside the breaking wave zone so you could self tow-in to a wave, then deploy the drogue shoot and ditch the wing and cruise the wave completely free, then prone paddle back (or pump back) to pick up the wing. You would need pretty chill currents for this to work, as the wing could probably get away pretty quick in a current after riding 100+ yards down the line. I imagine this will be common at Jaws soon. What do you think? (I understand you like the powered up wave riding though).

Thanks for the video. Windsurfer and wind foiler. Thinking about winging. 20 yrs since last on Maui. We rented a house on StableRD. Occasionally end up downwind at Kanaha. Lot less people on the water today. Covid effect = no tourist? Who makes the extra long footsteps? Have you looked at the Oceanus retractable leash. Robert over at BluePlanetSurf seems to like it for winging in the surf. Looks like he attached a windsurfing uphaul between the board and the end of retractable. Bit clunky, but ~10ft + uphaul total length.

Thanks Uno, Covid has all but stoped the visitor industry Tourist are starting to come back now but few sailor.. We have a healthy population of wind enthusiast here but the wind was light the day I shot this video. The foot straps are Fanatic long and I stretched them to the widest footstrap inserts on my board. The Oceanus is one solution but even at 10 feet long I did not think it would be long enough. I should get one and try it out.

Hi Alan, love the videos. I have subscribed. I have been to Maui twice. Use to be a great windsurfer and loved the sinker. The way you have adapted to wing foil to me makes me want to get back into it. I range between 72 to 83 kilos. Not sure what litre board I need. Love the wing and boom idea. Perhaps you can tell me the make and model. Currently live in southern Spain so could do this sport most of the year.

Aloha David, Generally speaking your board should have enough volume to float you. 1kilo per liter. Add a few liters for light wind locations or for entry level riders. I am using a Doutone wing. More videos in the pipeline on equipment coming soon.

Hi Alan! love the content! i foil mostly on the Atlantic, out of NYC but i like your videos like this to see more about what it’s like out in Hawaii! do you have more of this type of clip on your patreon? also, an idea for a future video, my favourite part out on the water is the song played by the wind through the struts, perhaps a compilation of all that wonderful sound would be cool! cheers! Justin

Hi Alan, Great video as always. Got me stoked to get out in the waves both wing and windsurf wave foiling. You said you were riding a 40" mast. What advantage does this give you over the GoFoil 36.5 mast? Thanks!!

Thanks Chuck, I actually prefer my 36 mast for waves. The 40" is my go fast set up that I wanted to try out in the larger faster moving swells.

So you are using a unit Wing here with a diy Boom? Or is this the new echo Prototype? I love the echo for the boom, have a 3.3m and 5m echo now, but especially in strong wind and in the waves the stableness of the unit when holding the front grip or just on the leash is very appealing, had to swim out to get to deep water and the echo starts to fly around like crazy when you let go of it, only on the leash. So I thought about doing what you apparently did, attaching a boom to a unit. How did you do it? Could I see some pictures? Maybe on patreon? Or is there a chance to buy one like that in the future? Greetings from Germany!

Hi Alan, Your videos are broken down in an excellent manner and I've learned so much. I am kitefoiler crossing over. I've used the Y straps for kiting. Should I use it for wing foiling as well or go strapless? Thanks

Thanks Serge, I like the y straps, like a windsurf board. I don't use a back strap. It's in the way and since I don't jump I don't need it. For beginners just learn to foil I recommend no straps

Hi Alan, I'm an ex-windsurfer from many years ago, who has just picked up this sport and I love the simplicity of it. But also it has a lot more potential for harming ones self. I have just ordered a Gath helmet after watching some viral video of I guy getting a foil in the head. But I notice you don't wear a helmet but you wear some sort of impact vest, any reasons why? I am also finding these leashes are a pain in the rear, as the other day I am sure the wing leash was too short as the wing fell the other side of the board and the leading edge downwind, so I was fully stretched out, plus sometimes the two getting tangled up. I think it might be because I choose to wear them on opposite body limbs. Something I will try out next time, both on the left or right. The videos are great and I have just subscribed, I bought a package with a 5m and a board 6'9 140ltr as I am nearly 90kg's and don't want to struggle, I'm 51, not looking to be that young speed merchant like the old days. But really I should have gone for a 6m & 4m as I find the 5m where I live either too much or not enough, so I will bite the bullet and by the 6m Duotone Echo as it has a boom and already I struggle with handles a boom seems more natural. Well thanks again for the great video would be great if you can put in the description wind speed, wing size, board volume, rider weight for us noobs! lol

Thanks Dan, I do wear a helmet when filming the POV angle. The rest of the time I like my Tilly hat to keep the sun off. But a Helmut is a good idea. In some of the videos we are far off shore. It would be a long swim in so I wear a float vest that doubles as an impact vest. As a long time windsurfer I prefer the boom to handles too. Please check out my Patreon.com/AlanCadiz site as in has detail instructional videos for first time on the beach to jibe. More instructional videos in the works for Patreon.com
