This is the best video of the octobass I've heard so far because I can actually hear it playing! I'm a bass player, and I wish I had an octobass except that my ceiling isn't high enough!

I think the problem with the octobass is, it's so low that it goes below what most people can hear clearly, so it doesn't sound great...

Well that the reason this one doesn't sound so good is due to technique. The overtones of all the lowest notes are very hearable, so it still works very well! With that as a sub bass to the orchestra it would sound amazing

16 hertz is the lowest note octobass can do, while ppl can only heard on 20hertz normally

Hector Berlioz dit dans son traité d'instrumentation et d'orchestration que l'octobasse ne sonne qu'une tierce plus basse que le mi de la contrebasse, autrement dit que la note la plus basse de la contrebasse. Étonnant, vu la grosseur de l'instrument.

L'objectif de l'octobasse était surtout d'apporter plus de son au pupitre des contrebasses. Issu du gigantisme ou l'on s'est dit que plus la caisse est grosse plus l'instrument grave sonnerait. Evidemment pour des raisons pratiques, l'ajout d'une cinquième corde grave a la contrebasse s'est révélée plus simple à tous les points de vu

Apparemment, l'octobasse mentionnée par Berlioz était un modèle nettement plus petit que celui-ci, qui est capable de descendre une octave plus bas que les contrebasses postromantiques.

@@aelfwine119 Je me suis informée auprès d'un ami faisant partie de l'Orchestre symphonique de Montréal, qui a 3 octobasses, actuellement, d'après un document trouvé sur internet. En tout cas, j'en vois une, quand je vais aux concerts à la Maison symphonique, où l'OSM fait ses concerts. Cet ami est trombone-basse solo de cet orchestre. Voici sa réponse : « En principe ça peut être un octave plus bas (que la contrebasse) mais souvent il (l'octobassiste) s'accorde (avec) la dernière note, (soit) le dernier la du piano. Une (contre-) basse arrête au mi le plus bas du piano, mais tous (les octobasses) ont une extension qui permet d'aller au do. C'est pour ça qu'on dit une tierce plus bas. » Les mots entre parenthèses sont mon interprétation pour aider à comprendre ce que mon bon ami m'a dit, parce qu'il n'a pas tout écrit... Mais je pourrais m'être trompée.

In case no one has noticed, this particular octobass setup has a lowest note of C1 (33 Hz, lowest C of piano), NOT C0 (octave lower) as in many other octobas setups. There is apparently a theory that says that the original octobasses of the 19th century had a bottom note of C1, merely a major 3rd below the low E of the traditional 4-string double bass, same C as the modern double bass with C-extension, as this one here does, and that the body was so oversized in order to give more power to the normally weak lowest notes of the traditional double basses. The octos with thicker strings that go down to C0 may therefore not be historically accurate.

Goofy musical trivia time! Franz Joseph Haydn wrote the melody after hearing "God Save the King" and thought, "Hey! My home country of Austria doesn't have an anthem. I should write something for the Emperor and maybe it will catch on!" He did and it became the basis for AUSTRIA'S national anthem from 1797 to 1918. Austria didn't do so well as World War I ended in 1918. The Austro-Hungarian Empire became plain old Austria and there wasn't an emperor. So, Germany took the tune and made it their anthem in 1922.

Perhaps, that ist their musical way to say that they are afraid of Germany

Yeah, subcontrabass strings don't work too well. Subcontrabassons are a MUCH different story. Much more versatile and beautiful sounding. Unfortunate how people look past subcontra so quickly
