Does Octave Records intend to put its music on the streaming service, Tidal? If not, why not?

Spotify/tidal etc pay labels; artists get paid according to their contracts with aforementioned labels.

A small artist might with luck make £50 in a year, it’s fractions of a penny per stream

This is NOT TRUE!!! Major streaming services such as Spotify pay a fee to the rights holders (both authors and publishers which can also be the artists) and such fees are distributed to the artists per the agreements they have with their RECORD LABELS and digital music distribution companies. If your record label is not uploading your music to streaming services then that label is denying the artist, not only an income stream but exposure as well. Exposure turns into music purchases.

What is true, Jon, is that the "fees" you mention are not enough to buy someone a cup of coffee, let alone make a living. A good friend of mine os a rather famous musician having played on some of the bigger releases of a decade ago. He's always kept his first royalty payment from Spotify. It was one penny. Fact is, unless you're a Taylor Swift you're not going to get enough from streaming to matter and the downside to this is people will have less of a reason to purchase the physical media if they can stream it.

@@eemians7026 \PS Audio, so how is it that Taylor Swift makes enough "fees" from streaming to be able to buy not only a cup of coffee but an entire coffee plantation? If streaming gives people less reason to buy physical media then how did Taylor Swift sell over a million copies of her last album and over 42 million albums in her career so far? The truth of the matter is that your friend can make the same amount, if not more, in "fees" from streaming services AND can sell a million albums too. Taylor Swift, and other big-name artists, don't have an exclusive on streaming services or record sales. What these artists do have is good record labels and good record labels make all the difference in the world. Why is it that you and I can know who Taylor Swift is and we hear her music and know when she releases a new album, has a new single, or broke up with another boyfriend, and we are aren't even Taylor Swift fans? It's because of her Record label. If a Record company isn't working hard to promote its artists and increase record sales then it's not a good record company. A good record company is an investment company that invests in its artists to the mutual benefit of the artist AND the record company. Incidentally, your friend's first royalty check may have been only a penny, but it's a penny more than he would have had if he didn't put his music on Spotify AND it was his first royalty check BUT it won't be his biggest or last check.

@@JonAnderhub Thanks, John but I fear you miss my point. An Octave artist perhaps has a few thousand fans and will likely be streamed a few thousand times. That would not net them enough for a cup of coffee, let alone a coffee plantation. What it will do, however, is reduce the number of physical media sales for them - money that we pay generously to our artists in the hopes we can help them earn a living.

@@Paulmcgowanpsaudio Why would you limit an "Octave artist" to a few thousand fans? I'm reasonably sure that any artist would want to reach as many fans as possible and wouldn't stop at a few thousand fans. Remember how you came to know and learn about new artists? You heard them on the radio, or at a friend's house. When you liked what you heard you went down to the record store and bought the album. Radio didn't kill album sales, it increased album sales (although the artists didn't get paid for radio airplay back then, they still became millionaires). Welcome to the 21st century where artist Stream their music, get their music played on the radio, and do whatever they can to get their music heard. The end result is more music downloads (the record stores of the 21st century.) If you really want to help your artists earn a living then don't cut them off from an income stream that benefits them and promotes their music.

On Qobuz you have the option to purchase albums. On Tidal the artist you listen to the most gets paid a portion of your subscription. With that said, Will Octave Records albums be available through download or SACD?

Cuz the streaming services don’t pay the artist any money…we just recorded our project with Paul and they did a great job…looking forward to hearing the end product….maybe Ron LeGault will get you there…(to profitability)..😊

It seems a few posters are somewhat naive of the reality of how record labels work, and how they decide to promote acts, and how little streaming services actually pay artists. An hour spent on Google would give the reality. Taylor Swift is a global icon, in a very small group of elite musicians currently who shift huge volumes of physical and digital media. So the marketing behind her is huge, because the return for her investors is guaranteed. And is self financing all her reworks of her original albums. Joe Bonamassa probably the top blues guitarist currently playing, took over every part of the process with his manager because of the manipulation and greed of the big labels. So his company fund all costs, but retain 100% of the rewards. Most labels insist on owning the copyright of the artistes in return often for a fixed fee, or in many cases for squat, and if that’s not acceptable, no contract. Without touring , and selling merch, the vast majority of musicians wouldn’t even eat. The other 99.5% of

I still think you make it hard on customers, to only rely on faith and luck, when you don't let them get a sample of the music. But maybe you are right in thinking, that audiophiles don't have to like the musik - they only have to like the recording. But I have to like the music first.
