Octatrack Private Lessons Revealed: Sample Mangling For Beginners

Музыка

This is an abbreviated online lesson on the Elektron Octatrack. The original session was cut down from over an hour to just under 28 minutes. If it seems fast, that's because it is due to the editing. All of my lessons come with a video recording of the lesson so you can go back and rewatch as much as you like. The student asked to be shown how to mangle samples on the Octatrack as well as learn about the machine in general from a new users standpoint- a where to start and what what's important type of session. This video is aimed at beginners but is packed with intermediate to advanced knowledge on the Octatrack and samplers in general.

When I see the workflow of the OT or DT I can envision my IDM/glitch-hop ideas coming to fruition, and other things just from the way it works. I didn't feel compatible with MPC. I learned how to use it, I just really didn't enjoy it. I enjoy the SP404MK2. Once I get my hands on a Digitakt or Octatrack I'll know how to use it from your videos. Thanks!

Thinking of getting an OT and I’m really curious about these, if anyone knows: (Edit: 2. Yes 3. No Still curious about the first question) 1. Can you live record a couple bars EZ style but have it constantly override record so that whenever you move the xfader to the right it plays a new/fresh recording? Or must you manually arm the track each time? 2. Can you have it set to play chops of a recording that has not happened yet? e.g. whatever recording I make on this track, play chop #3, #8, #16 of it on these specific trigs? Or must the recording exist before you chop it? 3. Have they updated it to be able to copy patterns on the fly without stopping yet?

I think the most useful advantage of pickup machines are that you can basically record a loop organically and have that loop automatically set the tempo for everything else. Aside from that, I don't know why you would use them... I think they overdub as well, which could be useful.
