The carbon fiber hull they were inside of is completely disintegrated. The big pieces you're looking at are the outer shell flattened together. It's essentially a petri dish. Any "remains" are basically smears. I'm sure they heard cracking, which is why they dropped weights and tried to resurface. But the millisecond it got a hole, it was the equivalent of 9 empire state buildings filled with lead on them. They didn't feel a thing

I have a feeling of the same, the carbon failed and imploded, during the implosion it finds weak spots and that was the window..put the cap on a Pringles can and step on it..the cap flys off..

It's amazing that any remains still exist. When this much pressure collapses on air, it heats it up to temperatures rivaling the sun. I am surprised they were not vaporized. Unless, they just found some fragments of bones.

Part of the story is, they MUST conduct a search and rescue (or recovery of remains) to confirm the sub imploded and all occupants are dead. But it took too long. Sadly, the Navy and Coast Guard probably knew Sunday night that the sounds they heard after Titan lost contact with the mothership was the sub imploding. All they had to do was match up the timeframe with the recording made by the SOSUS. I think they let the 4 day charade go on too long; might have been to protect and obscure U.S. capabilities from the enemy.

Everyone must keep in mind, up until this point we have never had an implosion of this magnitude at that depth with humans involved. The results have been theory based on what happens during an implosion, The process is so fast there is a chance some parts would get tossed while other parts are completely obliterated.

Everything outside the sub that wasn't pressurized, like the entire rear and all the landing strut assembly, wouldn't have been a direct part of the implosion and thus still more or less in one piece, though probably bent and twisted. So it makes a lot of sense that there would be large sub fragments and ruins.

  • @trevorjameson3213

The only body parts that would survive that would be teeth, bones, and hair. Even with no implosion, a human body at that depth would be crushed down to a fraction of it's normal size. We're talking at least 6000 pounds per square inch of pressure down there. With an implosion, there are several factors that would insure a human body would be completely destroyed. Not the least of which would be the mega-high temperatures from compressing air that fast, which would be around 7000 deg. C. , and 6000 psi of water hitting your body instantly would rip a body to shreds. Then the high pressures of the deep would crush anything left (except for maybe bone fragments and teeth).

Stockton Rush couldn't afford rolls of interwoven carbon fiber material, so he skipped the interweaving process of making the material and took the raw strands of carbon fiber and wrapped it around the pressure cylinder like a spool of thread , adding epoxy. Cross- interweaving the fibers is the most important process to achieve strength, similar to cross-interweaving threads to make a piece of fabric. It's in the video of him during the manufacturing process.

Has anyone determined approximately how deep they were when the Titan started to malfunction? The longer this goes on, the more questions I have. It’s wild to me that Stockton was so negligent and careless with others lives in his care. While they did sign a death waiver, those waivers are used for all kinds of things, most people would just think it’s just for liability’s sake and not actually believe that they’re really going to die. And most people don’t know the ins and outs of submersibles and what is safe or not. These people trusted him and he recklessly risked their lives knowing that he was warned several times about the viability and sturdiness of his subs. I’m a nurse and I have so many safety measures and checks that I follow every day I’m at work. It’s hard to wrap your brain around the fact that someone could be so careless about the lives of others. Terrifying!

Not necessarily … every consent you sign to agree to medical treatments features death, mutilation, complications … if there would be one for a plane covering all eventualities … it would look the same pretty much like for the sub … what could go wrong driving to work covering all eventualities … you would never go … as it would not look any different … the waiver alone does not say a thing! Well … nevertheless … diving 4 km deep down … it is dangerous … and the critics regarding the sub design should have been a red flag.

Not even close to an engineer, but the ones I know say they would be liquified and boiled in a microsecond. No bones, etc. Nothing.

Yes, most likely that's what happened. Temperatures from the instant compression of the air in the sub would reach 7000 deg Celsius for a couple of thousandths of a second. They said that's the same as the surface of the sun. So yeah, they were probably quick-fried first, then shredded by parts of the sub imploding on them at 1500mph, or twice the speed of sound, and then subjected to 6000 psi of deep ocean water pressure. I'd say nothing would be left, except maybe bone fragments or teeth.

well, when the pieces are comparable to soup - assuming it all hadn't burned/vaporized (and even scattered) away in the process - I don't know how specific you can go. Probably bone fragments..? Not sure how much there is left to specify - probably needs lab results confirming it is what they think it is or it isn't. Plus, odds of getting REAL information aren't too high.

I’m going to predict, based on nothing defensible, that when the carbon fiber hull collapsed inward, the viewer window was shot forward like a bullet. Not that it failed and blow inward, even though it was only rated for 1300 meters

Yeah I noticed that too. I suspect it's (the window and the frame it's mounted into) bonded in with some kind of adhesive given how that hole looked, no bolt holes or broken studs. As such, any non uniform flex in that dome, or any radical pressure shock from within, would knock it loose. Purely a hypothesis though.

it was only rated to 1300m. Rush refused to pay for a viewport certified to 4000m. Hubris just gets one killed, at that depth.

@@Richy_T Right, that part I get. The titanium dome has the bevel in it. But the lip shows no sign of bolt holes or broken studs. The lip of that opening looks completely smooth in the recovery footage. The other pics of the sub before it died shows 18 bolts holding the acrylic or whatever viewport in behind a metal ring. So I am thinking that the dome has a coned opening machined into it. But this might just a receiver for the window assembly. The forces on that window would be inward, not outward, so stresses on it would be keeping it firmly in place. Some sealant/adhesive would probably be enough. Seems hinky, just trying to make sense of the imagery coming out.

@@Richy_T Right, so if it was just held in, lets say chemically, because the interior pics show no hint of an internal ring securing it, then when the implosion happened, which in all likelihood was the ring-tube interface, the shockwave just blasted that window out.
