OCD In Children

In this video Dr. Elspeth Bell, a licensed psychologist at the Behavior Therapy
Center of Greater Washington, speaks on behalf of the Anxiety Disorders
Association of America. She discusses OCD in children. Most children with OCD
are diagnosed around age 10, although the disorder can strike children as young
as two or three. Boys are more likely to develop OCD before puberty, while girls
tend to develop it during adolescence. Unlike adults, children do not always
realize that their obsessions and compulsions are excessive.

Banj0 same here. Like when I drink something, I go through this weird thing where like, i can't take an odd number of sips. So I'all start off with two, and then I'll take another, but then I'll have to take another because three is an odd number. So then I'll end up taking four sips, but if the sip isn't as big as all the others and it's not an equal amount, I'll take another one. But then the same thing happens where it's on an odd number. So I'll take another sip. But I don't like the number six so I keep going until I'm satisfied. It's really weird but yeah. I also get really paranoid about the house when we leave home so I go through a process of double checking that everything is off and unplugging everything and stuff

Yeah I have ADHD and OCD, and compulsions are terrible, your brain knows that they’re not real but you feel like there’s something bad that’s gonna happen if you don’t follow your compulsions and I have terrible anxiety for like an hour after I ignore a compulsion, I just really hate when people fake it so inaccurate, yet people then think that is what OCD is and are desensitized to it when it’s a terrible and annoying mental illness that me, my brother, and MANY other people have.

I have OCD now at 17, having intrusive thoughts triggered by my grandmother's passing. I didn't really consider it until recently, but as a young kid I displayed LOTS of OCD like tendencies. There was a period of like 2 years when I was young where I was constantly washing my hands, It wasn't like washing them for long periods though, or washing then washing again, I would wash twice, and then if I felt like I touched too many objects that could be remotely dirty I'd wash again so it was a constant back and forth to the sink, and it was always much worse during any meal time. Eventually I entertained the idea that I didn't really need to wash so much, since other people were like that and they were pretty fine, so slowly I started washing less and being more "risky" with where I put my fingers. Eventually I could pull out my chair with my hands, sit down, and then eat without washing my hands in between.

I AM SICK OF EVERYONE SAYING "I THINK I HAVE IT BECAUSE I DO SOMETHING LIKE THIS SOMETIMES" OR JUST THROW THE WORD "OCD" LIKE IT'S A PERSONALITY TRAIT. You people are so damn annoying. If you actually have this disorder, or believe you do, only a medical professional can diagnose you with it. I was diagnosed at 16, and even though it literally takes over my entire life, it's somewhat reliving to know what's wrong with me even though it makes me want to scream my lungs out because it's so fucking frustrating.

  • @jessicaa6501

I used to have super bad OCD for example I always had to look out the window when a car went past and sometimes it would really get to me if I didn't do it and i would run outside and go down the street to see the car I even did it late at night and then it got worst and I started getting the urge to go the end of the street and touch the neighbors fence and touch the mailbox a certain amount of times or until I was satisfied and I also double checked the locks every night and a lot of other things ,but now I'm 13 and my OCD isn't as bad I just get it sometimes when I touch something I have to touch it evenly with the same body part on the other side of my body (usually 4 times but if I'm not satisfied with how I touched it the next number would be 8 then 10 and 12...) Update: I'm now 15 and my OCD is barely noticeable. I basically only get it when I'm super stressed or scared... I think.

I'm 13 and have moderate OCD that I am currently trying to get under control. I've only just realised that I started showing symptoms at an early age. For example, when I was aged 5-7 I would have to say "No thunder?, No fireworks?, No scarecrows?" To my parents as they tucked me into bed. It was my way of relieving the anxiety that I was going to be woken up by a loud (scary at that age) noise. Also, when I was even younger I remember having to 'rewind' when I did something wrong or out of place or if I felt like I had missed something. I do, I'm 13 years old as well. I always had to say goodnight to my parents/siblings (I had to say see you tomorrow to my dad since I wouldn't see him until after school) I could never joke about any disease as i would think that I would get it then. (Side note, I have primarily obsessional OCD (the harm variant) I was camping when it started. I initially thought that I was a psychopath. If you would like to hear more about it just reply. I also just want someone to vent about my troubles.

Now that I think about it, I have lots of anxiety troubles. When I thought I had lung cancer I would check my fingers and tried to make the diamond shape to reassure myself (I'm not good at describing things so if you want to know why just look up clubbing fingers) and another one was the knock on wood thing. Whenever I said anything that might "jinx" something I would have to knock on wood. Another one was where I can't think of anything I wish for at 11:11 as I believe the opposite will come true (I still do this one when I think about it

I always have to repeat just kidding to myself after saying something in case it would happen, I always have to wash my hands and hate touching anything. Edvard Gabrijel Etinski I had many obsessions. I am on medication now so it's almost unnoticeable. I used to do a lot of counting and touching things a certain number of times for good luck. But my biggest obsession was I was disgusted by my younger sister and would not talk to her or listen to her talk without choking myself to get her air out of my throat. Couldn't walk near her, wouldn't walk anywhere she walked, and much more. It was an everyday prison and torture. I am so glad to be on meds now.

this is so true. I was diagnosed with OCD when I was really young. I did the same thing everyday and everything had to be perfect. I colour cordinated my outfits and my shoes had to fit perfectly. Not only that my socks had to fit on my feet a certain way, and if I put my hair up there could not be a strand out of place and if there was I would literally rip my ponytail out. If anything was not how I expected it should be I would freak out, thats why I started picking at my nails and cracking my knuckles. I never took any medication though, my parents made me 'tough' through it. it must have been horrible for them because I was really annoying after awhile.

I have a checking compulsion, I have to check all the doors in my room 4 times by pulling on the handles before I can sleep and if one of them gets opened I have to redo the whole thing.. I have to check the fridge 4 times if I use it, if I set something somewhere I have to check 4 times that it’s still their even if I haven’t moved at all and the object is right next to me

Hello. I am a 12 year old who was recently diagnosed with an extreme case of ocd. It mostly started after my grandfather passed away. I want people to know that the stereotypes of OCD are not always true. It’s not always about washing hands. Mine is about fear of danger for myself and everyone around me so I make routines that if I break, I then think I will get hurt or someone else will.

Let me tell you a short story. If you feel like you have ocd and your touching everything or you want everything to be perfect dont worry. I have it and did we mention that it is a habit at around 8-14. If you know you are touching things and if you can control it and stop doing it that means you dont have ocd. People make it sound like aww you have it for touching random things but everyone does it and one day you will grow out it. Hope i made you feel better.

My OCD started in like 2nd grade and i would dread going to bed every night, bc it had to be "perfect" and i would repeat rituals for hours, once even staying up till 3 believing it would make me mentally tougher, but it was only wearing me down. After that my OCD slowed down a bit till around 5th grade when it slowly climbed back up again and around the middle/end of 6th grade it was REALLY bad, but it was more of a hygienic OCD now rather than my "everything needs to be straightened and/or perfect". I was washing my hands probably around 20 times a day. It got worse especially around this summer (going into 7th grade next year) bc of my time at home. When i was sharing hotel rooms with family I was so embarrassed bc I would wash my hands for like 3 minutes probably 5 times. My parents have even started PUNISHING me for my OCD (which was very shocking considering both of them work in the medical field and I figured they would know the do's and don'ts) This being a don't ofc. I'm hoping to get rid of my OCD before high school bc I rlly dont wanna be dealing with that shi when I get older. Also for those who wanna know, the punishments they would give were like taking away my soap or making me use their bathroom (which is sorta understandable), but then they started taking away my phone and limiting time with friends and stuff like that smh

Every time I go to bed I have to clean my room until it’s spotless, unless I won’t be able to sleep, I feel so irritated with that, and I have this thing with colours and food, every time someone is about to eat something I either go up stairs for an hour or sit down and go through the torturous smells and sounds, after they are finished I tell them to wash their hands, face, brush their teeth, Change they’re clothes, spray the room, and clean the area. It’s even worse when it’s a colour I hate, colours with me have certain emotions, black for instance is a very powerful colour especially when it’s matched with purple. Colours I feel a little more at ease with are colours like green, yellow, blue and red(basically the prime colours) but any other than that will put me in really bad anxiety, (start screaming or panicking on the spot). I also have a very repetitive movement, (pacing, sometimes rocking) I pace for up to 2 hours a day talking to myself, I like pacing in circles the most, but sometimes I do it in L shapes, or just back and fourth. Very sensitive to bright lights, noise, textures, and smells. And grew up with a really bad food phobia which caused me to start breaking my bones really easily when I was 11. I’ve broken my foot 3 times in 2 years now because of the vitamin deficiencies.

I am not diagnosed with ocd but I am almost sure I have it. When I was young I washed my hands so much they would bleed I was afraid that if any germs entered my body I would die. So many times thought that I would just die or go to hell. I would never touch any food that I ate. After months of this I finally grew out of it. Then later on It seemed to spark again after I watched this scary thing on tv. After that I had so many fears and it just go worse and worse. I kept making new rules for myself to follow and if I didn't follow the I felt like something horrible would happen like my family would disappear. It got so bad that I would even be to scared to walk in a room at times. One thing that eased my pain was those rituals. I would repeat words and numbers to my self in a certain order and tap my finger and blink my eyes a certain amount of times. I would feel fine for a second but I would soon have to do it again. It wasted so much time. Lucky I have finally took control of my emotions and my life has moved on. What do you guys think, do I have ocd?

Signs/symptoms of ocd are quite common, but they only become a problem if they intervene with your everyday life. Ex: if you throw out your dinner because the food is touching, if you refuse to leave your house because there is dirt/dust outside, things like that. The best way to see if you have ocd is go to a therapist. Self diagnosing from a website won't work. Hope that helps! 🤗

I am also homeschooled so i have NO ONE, to tell. I do all my habits everyday. It takes me hours to get to bed. Re doing stuff over and over. I need to get it 100% I wish everyone out there the best. It's been 3 years, and every day it gets worse and worse. I feel like ending my life, but i swear to stay strong. Good luck to all! You got this! Never give up.

I understand what you’re dealing with because I was like that at a young age. It does get better. I think you should consider talking about it to your parents, so that you can receive help. OCD is hard to live with. I didn’t get over mine easily, so I wouldn’t expect that for you either. We all deserve help. If you’d like to talk about it to someone, I’m always here. Just let me know.

I tend to check the time every 30 seconds. I also tend to wear the same jacket everyday and feel naked without it, I will also hate decorations outside of houses because that is not how the house is supposed to look the last thing I do is constantly make papers and textbook fit perfect at school. I most likely do not have OCD but these were just a few things I do that share similarities

I have OCD now but looking back on my childhood, I think it started really early in my life. When I was a child, I always a child, I always "looked back" to make sure no bad things were following me. It wasn't delusions or paranoia, just that I needed to do it. Was that a sign of the onset of OCD?

Is this OCD? I check that I have my stuff about 10 times in my bookbag, my locker, and planner. bite my nails, and wear a jacket or sweater everyday. The same one. I usually erase things over and rewrite them if I don't like the way it felt to write it. And if something touches me oddly like clothes or holding a pencil uncomfortably I have to scratch the area to make the uncomfortable feeling and my anxiety go away.

i haven't been diagnosed with OCD but whenever I think about breathing or swallowing i forget how to do it and I find myself having these panic attacks that won't stop until I listen to music or tv., i even stop breathing. And in the back of my head, I have these little whispers that say if I don't turn off the music or tv to distract myself my family will be massacred. So I turn off the music or tv and I'm left with my thoughts just getting swallowed by it. It's getting more consistent and I'm getting more scared every day because I'm worried ill be like this forever. I told my mom because my mom was diagnosed with OCD at the age of 20 and told her and we are going to my yearly doctor's appointment to talk to the doctors about whats happening. But i try to control and i see my mom constantly checking on me and its hard to see her worried. I feel so bad and i cry all nght when everybody's asleep because im starting to overthink. If your the same hope you can relate.

Yes it's OCD. I had to wear the same clothes at ages 12-18, i mean i changed! lmao I didn't wear the same for 6 years, but you know what i mean, I had to wear the same clothes everyday for a longer period than 'normal'. It made me feel 'safe' and that wearing that would bring me luck or a good day. I was also suffering with intrusive thought the first time when i was 11, it went away after a week, but let me tell you, that''s the most horrible shit ever. I went through my teenage years with OCD, but it wasn't 'difficult', i thought it was normal. Then when i was 18 the intrusive thoughts came back and I've been suffering from it ever since, and it's so fucking horrible, i don't even know if i'll ever get rid of this and it's scaring the shit out of me. I'm not saying you will get it!! because i had it the first time very young. I also think it has a bit to do with circumstances around you.
