Occupied Ukraine: Inside the horror of Russia's parallel reality • FRANCE 24 English

To justify the invasion of Ukraine, Russian President Vladimir Putin used the false pretexts of "denazification" and "demilitarisation" of the country. Russian state propaganda is built around the myth of a Ukraine in the hands of "Nazis", one where the Russians come to "liberate" the "Russian speakers". This propaganda is disseminated not only in Russia, but also in the occupied Ukrainian territories, where the population is plunged into a parallel reality. FRANCE 24's reporter Elena Volochine went to meet locals and exposed the terrifying real-life consequences of Russian propaganda on the ongoing war in Ukraine.

4:22 The moment they put down that fractured skull and it's jaw drops open... That hits hard, no matter how desensitized I may be. This was a person, just like me - But so much braver. Whoever this was: It seems they most likely defied their torturers until death. Think about what that must have meant for them. The Russians must have cut off their hands and feet, one by one... Each time giving this person time to suffer. Time to consider their fate. Time to break. The fact that _all_ of their hands and feet are missing, can mean only one thing: Time after time, they must have refused to give in to the maddening pain and their fear of death. In the end, this person never told the Russians what they wanted to know. They took their secret - whatever it might have been - to their grave. They may not look it... But the remains in that tarp, are more than likely to be those of a hero. I hope we will learn their name, someday.

These kind of facts are "interpreted" differently in Russia. They still love Stalin and tend to forget about Molotov - Ribbentrop pact, when they agreed to partition Poland between them. Ukrainian historiography sees Soviet union as an occupant and Stalin as bloody dictator who killed millions of Ukrainians during Holodomor and in GULAG. That's why you hear russian troops calling Ukrainian history twisted and "rotten". They hate this truth about themselves.

My fear for this country is not that they won't win, or even of nukes - horrifying as that would be. But the worst thing that could happen is for Ukrainians to allow Russian sympathizers to live in Ukraine again. Ukrainians are a very forgiving people, who try to live in happiness. But to allow any Russian loyalist inside their country is to allow a seed of war to sprout & grow. The result would be this situation all over again. Western Europe ( and American Republicans for that matter) have grown to lazy & passive about guarding against Putin. It is not communism the world has to be worried about - it is the eventual takeover of dictators like Putin, who are essentially just glorified mob leaders & thugs. It has been horrifying enough to watch a past president - Trump - to become a puppet of and infatuated with Putin. It took less than 4 years, 7 we almost lost our ability to have a free election. And it's still not over.

Propaganda to tickle your ears. Meanwhile in the real world - ''UPDATE BACHMUT: Ukraine commander Petro Kuzyk of the Svoboda Battalion stated his soldiers are staying in trenches full of corpses and knee-deep water as they try to fight the Russian's. When asked of human losses "They are colossal, we don't even count the bodies now"

@@bigcoolviking wow straight out lying, he said this in reference to the Orcs: “Kuzyk: They are colossal. They don't even count bodies. The fields, the woods in front of the positions are all littered with corpses. I watched them: they dragged their people back to bury them, take off their warm sweaters, and start to put it on themselves. But, nevertheless, each assault group has a grenade launcher, a machine gunner, and their machine guns more or less perform their tasks. They have herds.”

This is giving me PTSD. On the other side of the world. It is unimaginable that any civilised country in the west could have allowed it to happen and are continuing to allow it to happen. It is unimaginable that the world allowed these lies since 2014. EU and US are complicit in these atrocities. They need to stop them. Now. No more mealy mouthed dropping of crumbs.

Most people I think at least in the Free Democratic Countries truly want Ukraine to win back all their land. Many times I've read there is energy and power in thought. So by our thoughts wanting Ukraine to win can create a energy I believe that will assist in Ukraine becoming completely free again. NATO & the EU as they know themselves must not let Russia succeed with it's attempt to destroy the Ukrainian people and take their lands.
