    For Anna it was all in the eye's. But it's more than that. She subconsciously was compelled to defile in them everything she lost in herself. Hope, stability, trust, potential and innocence.

    I think Anna was subconsciously looking for someone that looks like her brother (her mom even mentioned that Jay looks like him). The problem is that Jay doesn’t have the same personality as her brother - Jay was more of a softy. Jay’s father was the one who fulfilled her sexual-supply (aggressive form of sex). And that resonates with the fact that her brother raped her… so my opinion is that she feels so guilty of the death of her brother that she seeks to ‘live again with him’ in the form of this complex relationship with Jay and his father

    I wonder why no one mention those very strong narcissistic traits coming from Anna. The whole movie is about how a malignant manipulative narcissistic person can ruin someone's/people's life just to get her supply and then just irresponsibly leave without a word when it gets too complicated and impossible to continue playing her mind games. Anna's character was pure perfection and felt terrifyingly real from this perspective.

    Will is defintely one of the most deranged despicable characters I've ever seen. One thing that did strike me about him however, is that prior to meeting Anna he did not seem happy. He just completed a medical breakthrough, had loving supportive wife and family, yet seemed empty and sullen. He kept saying to his wife, he was just tired but it seemed more than that. You could see it when Anna first contacted him on his phone he was just going through the motions on his excercise bike, then started peddling like a madman. That was the point of no return, he was not going back to his original life. He's actually similar to Anna in a lot of ways, in that they are willing to forego any bonds or attachments in the pursuit of new passions no matter what the ramifications or damage they cause. Will mentioned this in the speech his dad gave him for going for what you want in life when he saw Anna for the last time. However Will is most worse than Anna given he actually had kids and family who will be irreparably scarred by his actions forever.

    I don’t understand the first time Will saw Anna. The way she was already staring at him first and knew he was Jay’s father. I thought she had a secret agenda (like revenge or she was already infatuated with him because he is a famous surgeon, and she used Jay to get close to Will) It’s really unnatural how it went straight to hooking up with no real chemistry to start from. They knew nothing about each other or had anything that connected them to each other.

    Something I noticed about the show is William didn’t show any regard for his son the entire time. MAYBE in the first episode after the first time he talked to Ana and called Jay almost as if to warn him about his girlfriend. It’s just crazy that he did such outrageous things without thinking from the very beginning. The only emotion displayed towards his son the whole time was jealousy. He wanted to be more important to Ana than his own son he was in a secret competition with him the whole time. Then when Jay died that was the first time you even see Will care about his son AFTER IT WAS TOO LATE. Then of course afterwards he basically saw his son as someone who was once an obstacle that was now removed. I don’t even understand how someone could have the capacity to continue an affair after all that. I felt bad for his wife and daughter too nobody mattered to him

  • @MiamiChica

    @MiamiChica

    I don’t think he cared about his son or his family at all. He was only crying because he was probably scared about the backlash he would get (he was still fixated on Anna even when he was holding Jay), and he did not feel any remorse about what he did. He never really loved or cared about his family.

    I don't think the ending meant the cycle would start again. To me, when the therapist said "would it help if there were some rules, is it something YOU FEEL you need?" it gave Anna the answer she had been waiting for on the biggest question that was her life: What was I really seeking? Rules. Because as you can see when she spoke with her mother, her mother could've stopped her from being abused by her brother, but she never did: her mother never established the rules. Therefore, Anna thought as long as she had rules everything would be fine, everything would be under "control". She became a control freak, someone who could only allow herself to live by following rules, and yet, her rules made no sense at all. So when the therapist asks her that question, it seems like she is finally understanding what she had been seeking, rules, and the right ones, because clearly her rules had very dangerous consequences. Will on the other hand is a surgeon, it is known that sociopaths and psychopaths are attracted to these kinds of jobs because they are not easily bothered by the blood, etc. He had a perfect life, he craved something thrilling, just like his job, and if Anna would've allowed it, he would've been able to live that way his whole life. That is why you see him tell his son "will you be able to handle it?" as if that is all that mattered. There was no empathy of a father, no understanding of what his son needed to hear from him, he saw marriage as nothing but part of the choices he made. He speaks further on how his own father taught him to just persue whatever he decided to take on, however, clearly, morality is not necessarily part of that motto he has. As Anna said, she tends to attract "certain" people. Perhaps her brother was a sociopath, perhaps so was her mother, perhaps she attracted once again another one, like a lamb when she first gazed at him, his prey. Anna was seeking a sense of normalcy, the right kind of normalcy. Beautiful movie, from the perspective of a psychology student.

Mind you, sometimes it was an attempt to mask the second-hand embarrassment I felt because this series was a truly excruciating experience. Anna was simply irritating as f@@k, with her pretentious, cringy diary, and "learn to love the questions" 1 liner as the only personality trait. Two grown-up men act like teenagers in a corny indie movie about a love triangle in a local supermarket because "she just sits around in mysterious." I understand attraction but NO ONE looks at you across the room for 5 seconds and you instantly push an olive into their mouth provoked by, what was supposed to be, longing looks and low voice register. Here is what I think: Since Anna was a narcissist. Probably the root cause was the fact that she kept thinking people would die for her, she believed it and thats why she was misterious with Jay and open with Will. Will felt special for her sharing more with him... And Anna knew how to teigger and boost his ego.. she was passive agressive with Will.. Jay did love her. As he mentions this in their trip to France, it is the first time he has loved. Jay died because he was shocked when he caught them... Will was the only one that saw Jay accidentally fall. Anna had her evyes covered she didnt see what or how it happened. She just heard so she immediately thought Jay had commited suicide (apparently thats what she told her mother and was what she was telling everyone the people innthe hotel for thw honeymoon) she literally says "he died because of me" this was narcissistic behavior she was believwing what she wantws to believe as she just walked away... When Jay's death was an accident not suicide... So Anna 'enjoyed' hearing and saying people die because of her Anna keeps telling everyone this. Anna loved none of them she loved thw fact or thought that it was interesting to keep hiding things and adding adrenaline to her day to day... When Jay died everything was boring, there was no point in seeing Will as there was no one to hide from no lore. Thats why she dumps him. When she goes partying she immediately loses interest in the man she was dancing with because she is used to have control over people and dominate them, and the guy was doing this to her so thats why she walked away.. because she likes submissive people. People she can set out rules to and control. And thats why the Word rules is all over Annas vocabulary.... The first thing she told Will after their first encounter was "here are the rules" when will shows up to France she yells 'you broke the rules' she kept telling everyone "I have everything under control" (because of her rules same she had with Jay) At the end in therapy Anna first thing she shares is "I have never done this before I dont know the rules" Man asks: "would it help to have some rules?" Anna: Sorry? Man: is that something you feel you need? Anna: How strange. She is thinking at this point that with one single question... She realized that is something thst she does to others but no one has done with her. No one ever questioned her. It is left for our imagination as it is never explained, but I believe she was doing what her brother did with her. Probably set out rules. Or it was that she realized that she was obsessed with rules with that last line. Will, well is pretty self explanatory that his suffering would be losing everything.

    I binged this whole series. And the reality is…hurt people, hurt people. I feel no pity for anyone involved, especially Jay. From the start of Anna and Jays relationship, Anna kept secrets, secrets about her past, hell even her relationship with Jay was a secret. For Jay to accept this and still pursue Anna, to ask her to marry him was a red flag on his end. He didn’t love her-he too was just infatuated by her wisdom (age gap), by her sex…Maybe he was obsessed too…but there was no love.

I feel towards the end...William was obsessed and even thought they could actually be together! He was so far gone that the death of his own son didnt appear to phase him. To add to what others have said, I also think it shows how cheating (regardless of who its with, i.e.-a co-worker or friend, let alone a daughter-in-law to be) can happen when people may be bored in their marriage, but cheating I believe is also a result of individualism, a social force that has grown in our society that affects everything, and a lack of understanding regarding the sacredness and sanctity of marriage. In this case, sex and excitement for them unfortunately becomes more important than long-lasting love and commitment, and can be connected to mental health disorders as well.

    I'm assuming that the moment Anna tells William she never wants to see him again and wishes they never met, the reason he becomes emotional and cries- is not only losing her but realizing that sacrificing his own marriage and family was for nothing in the end. The fact that he wants to rent out her old apartment, where it all happened and where Jay died is sick, and it shows signs of addiction (beyond obsession) and definitely signs of a mentally disturbed mind, maybe even sadistic.

    Makes sense how Anna was abused by her brother and when he died, she would go with any guy that had his eyes kinda like her own version of therapy which was y she chose Jay then u see the therapist has similiar eyes. She was a messed up person and the digusting thing was that her mother knew of the abuse. Meaning Anna will continue her cycle of therapy needs or marry like she mentioned. Will decided his obsession with Anna was more greater more important than his son even after his death and that is the most disturbing part of it all. At least Anna showed some form of remorse but Will never ever did.

    This show really shows how unhealed and unresolved trauma can become a never endless cycle of hurt and pain. In a way, the abuse and confusion she suffered with her brother completely deformed her idea of love and sex. One theory could say, because she had an intimate relationship with her brother (both sexually and love - her mom did say they were inseparable), she now, as an adult had to break down the 2, love for Jay and sex for Will in order for it to make sense. She is a fantastic character, extremely seductive, but under that enticing sensual hypnotic beauty, lies a web deceitful traits ready to rip you apart. Not unusual for very seductive people to have a dark side. You can’t have it all ;)

  • @Senate300

    @Senate300

    That theory would imply that young Anna happily gave it up to her brother Ashton but as she got older she felt differently and saw it for what it was. Sexual abuse. The mother not only failed to protect her daughter but had the nerve to victim blame her for what happened. Obsession humanised Anna's character and established a motive for her subconscious compulsion to destroy. If you love Obsession, I recommend the 1992 film Damage.

    Very good review. I agree it was good but far from great. The acting from the main characters was excellent. William personifies the dark side of powerful/highly successful men. Many of those men marry a woman that makes them look good or a woman who has connections like Ingrid's father to help his career.. I could not help recalling what his co-worker said of him. That she admired him but he was cold and very aloof. Those type of men are not necessarily marrying a woman that they can explore their dark sides with. Also there are men that don't care about women or children at all and are only about getting their own needs met. I don't think I would call William psychotic but I would say he never loved his wife or her children and went into that marriage for selfish reasons. He also treated Anna in the same selfish way. I think this guy was always dark and it just have to be brought out into the light.

    The worst. Man sees woman across the room. Man becomes ridiculously obsessed with her immediately. No storyline. It was bizarre. Wth is he so obsessed about to the point he has to go to the hotel room to “sniff her out” lol. Absurd. He barely met this woman and had a quick romp. I’m perplexed. And his son dies and he tells her, id do it again. No regrets. Wtf? Nobody gets that deranged and obsessed over a brief meeting. And I’m sorry but there was nothing alluring about her If they were trying to portray her a mysterious, se sexually attractive woman, it was a huge failure. They need to burn it. Weird.

    To those that don’t understand this movie - find it odd, weird, unusual, unsettling or all of the above. Good. That shows me that you haven’t crossed paths with folks that have a “cluster b” type of personality disorder. I know women that are like Anna in the series. Similar to the film, Deep Water with Ben Affleck. This happens in real life folks as much as you may think it’s a bad series. The destruction & chaos they leave behind in every connection they come across with even if they don’t mean to. It’s sad. Not trying to excuse the behavior but this series shows more into our reality as much as you all don’t like it.

    I did surgery that she will repeat the cycle with the therapist. She wasn’t really making googly eyes at him and if he is a halfway decent therapist, he won’t get together with her instead I think she was realizing that she does like rules and also that she needs rules like next time, you have a boyfriend don’t get together with his father. It is ambiguous weather. She will become a better person, or if she will try to seduce the therapist

    I have a serious crash on Richard Armitage since North and south series. If I only had the interest of a man like Richard, I'd be content. Although I loved his acting and part in Obssesion netflix 2023, I don't believe this is a masterpiece. I saw no actual chemistry between him and lead actress. The ending is too predictable. Script appeared to be weak and somewhat shallow. I doubt I will watch season 2. With that said, I remain in Richard Armitage's fan base.

Id rather you die tha my son..... and then the other guy that said "your son's Quality t. was when he said he was looking to be nothing like you at all" like saying "how right he was" those things were hitting his ego but he had none at thia point as he had lost himself.

    This is based on a book called Damage, which is more aptly titled since the film shows the direct link of what damaged people can do. Though I read it a long time ago, the book was better. There was also a 1992 film called Damage with Jeremy Irons and Juliette Binoche playing William and Anna. I haven't seen that one in a long time, but I'm sure it was also better.

    As a father this goes against every fibre of my being. There's something so so wrong with what that Dad did to his son. Best case scenario for him is if he goes straight to the son on the night he met her and tell all, maybe get a temperature check to see if the son cared about her or not - if casual then hook the old man up son? That's the limit of the possibility. It's just unrealistic to me. I have two sons and I could never hurt them like that. And if their bird pulled a move.. id probably get mad. Then I would make my son break up with her, then I would tell her to stay away from my son. Women like this exist. Yes they are intoxicating. And the sex is outer worldly. But NOTHING comes before family. Especially father's, sons and brothers.

    Sometimes in the heat of obsession, people will forgoe what they never truly valued to begin with. As seen with Will who was both pitiful and ruthless in his affair with Anna even after all was revealed. What obsession did was humanise Anna Barton's character as well as established a motive for her compulsion to destroy.

Wills' daughter found the note in his pocket and rightfully thought he was having an affair and messaged him anonymously to get him to stop. It was explained in a scene in either episode 2 or 3, cant remember exactly.

    The older I get, the more I realize that 8 billion people all desperately trying to be relevant in a crowded world often yields mediocre individuals doing mediocre work. This filmmaker falls way left of meh-the story line is absurd and I’m too old to fall for silly shock plot twists and endless blah sex scenes. Take the famous sex scene in 365 days- terrible acting but the guy made the sex scene hot and believable. This movie’s main characters are cliched and their sex scenes a big yawn. Coupled with a silly story line(who would do this to their son and family? A successful surgeon? Highly unlikely). This series supports my argument made months ago: Netflix content is threadbare. The white lotus was fantastic- oh yes, that’s on HBO. Perhaps a new CEO or content king at Netflix is in order. For now, I’d steer clear of this time waster and definitely short Netflix stock.
