I recognized so many things about my father in that character. Fortunately, there was no physical abuse in my family, but constant emotional and psychological abuse. A total narcissist, even to his dying day as a birthday gift to me, he left me a box of memorabilia - all photos of himself. It's incredible that someone can only see the world from their own point of view and that they are the one who matters. And the lines about, 'You are so stupid', and 'No one else would ever want you' is how he trapped my mother into marrying him.

The actor playing the part of Matt Walsh so expertly portrayed a narcissistic abuser that it's eerie. The mind games, subtle or overt put downs in his speech about his "wife", his grandiosity, etc are too much like the real thing. And Josie Davis realistically played a woman trying to appease him in every way to keep from being abused & potentially k*lled, while stuffing down her real feelings and planning a secret escape. Here's to all of us who got away and are free, living better lives today!

I'm in the middle of working on my third book, which is about a man who is like this character. It's meant to warn women of the early signs they will experience with a man like this and to let them know that this is not a man you want to have anything to do with. I have notes going back years of each event and crazy conversation we had. Not only is this man extremely fussy about the tiniest speck of dirt, he has rules which he changes so that it is impossible to keep up with them - guaranteeing my constant failure. He remembers every mistake I ever made going back years, but never anything I did that was good . The constant badgering about dumb little things, over and over again, eventually becomes soul crushing. This type of man will never acknowledge that their partner has talent and will never acknowledge their accomplishments. It will never get better because this type of man is a miserable specimen and deals only in negativity. You can never win any argument with logic, because he isn't interested in anything you have to say and will cut you off or talk over you. You will constantly hear how you don't listen to him and that if you did listen your life would be better. My advice - take nothing, just run away as fast as possible.

Both (along with many others) provided me with insights that are slowly allowing me to pull myself out of the hole. Still, I too freeze at the sound of my ex’s truck passing (he’s a neighbor, never date a neighbor as you prob know), but slowly but surely some aspects are becoming better. I’m surprised how incredibly hard it was and still is, like you said, it’s difficult. Will we ever feel or be normal? At least we’re safe right now, I wish I could hug you if you wanted one you or make you laugh so hard you pee from that-the opposite of being frightened:) I’m so proud of you for getting out, you are stronger than you may know. @@saracaruso5148 I'm so very sorry. I won't lie there were a few times I wasn't sure I was going to make it out. I guess the that I rested a double barrel shotgun on the bridge of his nose and told him if he as much as flinched he was a dead man was the day I got control. And the day I left was the day I won. And when he passed away years later from cancer I was free.

Narcissists are not far away from psychos.. although the person in the film is not a narcissist, he is a psychopath , narcissists won't be suffering from being left or not loved, neither they would put themselves into a danger by killing anyone for revenge (unless they have psychotic traits), their problem is that they are not able to feel love or empathy.. they would be simply looking for another victim, putting all the blame of separation on a previous victim, narcissists are not human beings, they are sub-humans as they can't feel or behave like us...one has to experience narcissistic abuse "on their own skin" to fully understand classic textbooks about narcissists

The new guy, when she leaves, is so persistent. In movies like this, Hollywood puts this out as cute and endearing. In real life, a guy like this is called a stalker and can't take no for an answer. And if he can't take no for an answer for a date, is he really going to take no for an answer when he wants sex? In movies it can be cute. In real life this is very scary.

That's an interesting point for a discussion. Where do you draw the line between a persistance that prooves that he is really interested, and stalking? I think, in this movie, he does the right thing. She isn't really scared of him, but traumatized by her experience with her ex-husband. When the new guy stays around, this gives her time to get used to the thought that there are gentle, kind men, too.

NARCISSISTIC LOVE ----->> comes in MANY shades of BRUISING. Long sleeves DID NOT HIDE my emotional pain. Make~up DID NOT HIDE my Monster's fisted wrath. I dreaded hearing the birds chirp .. each and every morning, for their song meant another 24 hours of living in my misery. I finally found the strength to GET OUT. I could FEEL my internal bruises slowly healing and, the birds' chirps have never sounded *SO SWEET.* ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Blessings to those who still need our prayers. *YOU TOO* .. are WORTH loving!
