Obsessed With Building "Best Birdhouse in the World" | Full Film

Originally titled "Holkmannen", this documentary by Mattias Olsson was co-produced by and broadcast on SVT (Swedish national television).
A word from the director:
Making a film about my father and his passion for birdhouses I guess wasn’t a very rational move. “Who on earth will care?” a voice inside of my head muttered. But I couldn’t stop myself. It was like the project wanted to happen and it grabbed me and wouldn’t let go.
Only afterwards did I realise it wasn’t really a film about my father and his birdhouses. It was a film about feeling true passion for something in a world that tells us we should care only about logical things; like our savings, our education, the local sports team, which car we’re driving or whether we can afford to renovate our kitchen.
Whenever true inspiration rises up - inspiration that bypasses the brain, that maybe doesn’t make any sense but just feels right anyway - I believe there’s an opportunity to step into a divine space.
What am I saying here, that my father’s bird houses are divinely inspired masterpieces? Yes, maybe that’s what I’m saying.

I started to watch this video, because I thought I recognized this man. But I was wrong. However, the man who I thought it was lives here and is also in his eighties and he is a well-known birder. He is the most modest person I’ve known (he delivered mail - that was his career), he’s educated SO many people here about birds and bird conservation and yes, he has been recognized

Please consider publishing the plans for the bird houses, for a fee of course. Great design. I am looking for a design that is more for the urban environment.

I think the best end of a video I have ever seen. Sure wish I could spend a day building with your dad. What a guy?! Peace be with you and your family. Keep up the great content. I retire in two years and want to sell woodworking pieces at a farmer's market. I happen to have a small sawmill. Definitely going to add birdhouses to the list. Might even make the second best birdhouse in the world. Can't top your dads....

Well.... I liked Bengt and his birdhouses a lot till about the middle of the video. That he was upset, that the hatchlings had died, that he noticed the bad shape the birdhouses around him were in and that he didnt stop at complaining about the situation but took action. But I thought he did all that for the birds, for nature and not for making money and the appriciation of others. Did he honestly needed money? He should have felt honored to be called "The Bird-House-Men" not offended.

I think he was just upset that nobody saw all the time, effort and love he put into each bird house. You know, like when you've worked so much on something and people kind of shrug and say "oh, nice."

@@campfire-stories Yes, but thats exactly what I meant: What was his intention? Getting attention and appriciation or helping wildlife? The ones the birdhouses are for appriciate them very very much and what Bengt will earn for coming years are beautiful observations of nesting birds and later their fledgelings. And he might have raised awareness around his community about the help, nature needs and what little it takes to help by just offer nesting opportunities.

I don't like the ledge inside the hole, for the chicks to be able to look out. The chicks should not be encouraged to hang around near the hole until they're ready and strong enough to get up there by themselves. if they fall out, they're not gonna be able to fly. I know it's not a birdhouse tutorial, but a film about a man. Obsessive perfectionsts, like this man and myself, tend to get too focussed on certain things and miss the wider picture, like no one else is so obsessed about birdhouses that they're gonna pay 400Kr for one. Still, I guess I'm gonna be doing the same thing as this guy when I'm in my 80s.
