Sierra Boggess, Julie Andrews, Audra McDonald...all have had successful careers with beautiful voices and aren't belters. Classical singing is vastly under appreciated.

this is me trying to hit that note

I'm mostly an alto so there are some high notes that I can't hit. But I've taught myself to hit some high notes with a basic tip. RELAX don't hesitate when it comes to the high note. Just take a deep breath in think of the note that you have to hit and release it. This technique really really really helps me a lot when I'm trying to learn a new song or when I'm relearning an old one. There's this song called Ani Ma Amin by Paul Caldwell and Sean Ivory and it's pretty high for someone who's not exactly a soprano. But I taught myself this technique while I was relearning it and I was amazed of how much better it sounded. It wasn't perfect, but it was definetley much better. If you guys are struggling with high notes use this technique it really works. Let me know if it helped any of you.😂❤️

kkstar 12 yeah that helps me too I always tend to strain when I'm going to high notes but as long as I relax I'm good!

woogangpea That's kind of part of the genre. Every genre is different, some has belting some has not, like most classical music. It's very classic in musical theatre because you instantly get more power and emotion through belting.

woogangpea classical repertoire doesn't call for belting which is why it is not taught in classical singing. Classical technique is also a completely different to contemporary technique but belting is completely learnable

Broadway singing is primarily divided into two methods - 'belt' and 'legit'. 'Legit' is basically classical (i.e. opera) style singing, while 'belting' is using your head voice (and your mix, of course) to produce a chest-like bright tone by resonating in your face rather than in the back of the head as is common in classical singing. And to dispel the common belief in classical culture - in belting, you do NOT push your chest voice up above your break, unless you want shredded vocal cords in a month - belting is simply a different way of resonating your head voice.

Also the larynx in a completely different position, higher and tilted forwards with the cricoid in belt whereas in operatic style singing the larynx is in a lower position. It's just different muscle coordinations to produce different vocal qualities really.

Just to make something clear about that though - the larynx being in a higher position doesn't mean it's brought up too high with undue tension. It's just positioned differently.

I started singing "Ladies Who Lunch" at the end.

Most of the people on Glee have already been on Broadway. And the writing's not that bad it's just supposed to be a fun show where they incorporate singing and dancing. Don't take it so seriously y'all.

Oh come on are we really going there? Appreciate THEATRE for what it is and appreciate Glee A TV SHOW for what it is. Just because they cover musical theatre songs - as well as pop, don't forget - doesn't mean we can bash one or the other. They are seperate things. It's okay to like both, if you do.

I used to think Hayley Williams was the pinnacle of singing...then I discovered...Miss Sierra Boggess.

Glee is not musical theatre. It's 100% pre-recorded, auto-tuned crap. The only two people in the whole show who can actually sing are Lea Michele and Mathew Morrison. (don't forget Charice, Idina Menzel, and Kristin Chenoweth, but they're not regulars)

I'm gonna respond to everyone here, even though I'm not the OP. +mymy Jonathan Groff was a very infrequent guest star on Glee +dignature123 Amber Riley is amazing, but they autotuned her like crazy on Glee. They seriously downplayed her amazing talent (both singing and acting wise - she annoyed me so much by the end of Glee, but I loved her in The Wiz Live and I like her on the Dreamgirls cast album). +Dante Giello Once again, they downplayed his talent on the show. His voice isn't incredibly distinct, so when they autotuned him to holy hell, he was just a random thin voiced tenor.

Glee celebrates musical theatre. They can all sing, Naya Rivera, Mark Salling, Amber Riley, Heather Morris, Darren Criss, Chris Colfer, Chord Overstreet, etc. Lea Michele is amazing, i freaking love her! and Matthew Morrison is fantastic. Glee celebrates musical theatre, and it's because of Glee, that a lot of people appreciate musical theatre a lot more. I love the fact that Glee makes musical theatre and performing cool, again. I love it. I appreciate all aspects of musical theatre.

Funny! This gal's cute--she should get some sitcom or something from this. How about a recurring role on GLEE?

Sorry yes, you're correct. I stopped watching half-way through the 2nd season, so I'm not entirely familiar with all of the players.

It's sort of disgusting how people are considering GLEE the highest form of achievement these days...

Umm. Who is considering GLEE the highest form of achievement? I think people just think it's a lot of fun and it's nice to see broadway people on television and it's one of very few musical television shows so that's why people always bring it up.

I don't know any real artist that to be honest, has not used it. If you're talking about live, that's different. there is none. there's a huge difference between theatre or opera (live) and film/tv. i don't believe in anything mediocrity in regards to the arts for i am a hard working artist myself trying to make it within the business. The theme of Glee lives up to its message of believing that you can do it, and that you can make it in this business and you have a way of being successful.

I disagree with that. To be honest, in my opinion, for example Les Mis, I can't stand that musical, nor do i like or really care for the music. However, it's because of glee, and the way that they did the song, that I i can actually tolerate that song. I believe that it's completely unrealistic for a song to not be autotune, because it's supposed to be perfect, however it's not excessive autotune. This cast is the hardest working cast. The hours are long and grueling, and they work hard. amazing

Where to start... Can't stand Les Mis or the music? Why? Unrealistic not to have auto tune? Auto tune is the downfall of music. Songs are not supposed to be perfect. The fact that there are imperfections is what makes them beautiful. Any kind of auto tune, even rarely is just the performer just not giving a damn.

​@@itinkle agree with everything you say except that any kind of autotune is a reflection of negligence on behalf of the performer. I think it's more of a reflection of their artistic intentions, whether it be to produce music 'perfect' which will succeed in today's overly automated/mechanised industry or whether it's simply as another production tool in a rapidly developing techological field, which when used correctly can create a revolutionary sound (like it or not, cher's life after love was not the singer feeling lazy!! it was the beginning of a revolution in terms of the relationship between music and electronics!)

Just because they're taking songs from productions like Les Mis or Wicked does not mean that that's appreciation of musical theatre. What they're doing is, actually, destroying these songs and their credibility as art by lowering the standard of quality with both inadequate singing ability and copious layers of auto-tune. Not to mention the complete inability to convey any accurate level of emotion with the songs they choose.

i mean a few of the people on glee could DEFINITELY be on broadway...but the rest....nope...and the writing on that show.....and the plot...oh its embarrassing.

I guess a Tony means nothing, or having a hit show....

Frankly, that's the case, yes. Commercial success does not necessarily equate to aesthetic merit. Just as not everything that deserves accolades will receive them, not everything that does receive recognition particularly warrants it. A trophy is just that.

I'm guessing SOMEONE can't belt...
