Andréa Burns (In the Heights) joins Seth Rudetsky to talk about her initial experience performing in "West Side Story," and why she pretended that she didn't know the choreography. She owns Carnaval del Barrio from In the Heights. No one has ever done that song like her.
She's so mesmerizing. She has that "thing" that makes you unable to take your eyes off her. I didn't know her but I'm hooked!

The great talent of Andrea Burns was revealed to me when I was fortunate to be music director of West Side in new Germany in the 90's. She was magic onstage and off stage her humor, good nature inspired us. Continue to inspire audiences with your radiant talent, dear Andrea Burns!

I'm really sad that Andrea wasn't in the movie ITH. I really was looking forward to seeing her on the big screen. Daphne was really good but did not have that quality of Andrea. Anybody else agree?

It's not a full belt though. It's mixed with her head voice.

+Jonathan Bontrager-Waite I don't think it is! Basically belting is just singing full chest voice higher than it should go. when you belt (only chest voice). Your chords thicken and it stops sounding nice and you will be straining ridiculously after you reach your break which is nowhere near a C6. You can scream and try to get up there, but it's damaging and you won't get any higher than that. The goal of voice students is to learn to mix the voice and achieve power in the higher notes without straining. When you hear Kate Shindle or other trained singers who reach high notes like that, it's because they are mixing some head voice into it. There are head voice heavy mixes which is more of an operatic sound and also chest heavier mixes (like modern Broadway sound). It all goes with training and breath support and all that fun (not really) stuff. Sorry this was so long!
