Lot's of ways, just depends on how much you want to spend to do it and what you plan on doing with it. If it's your daily driver around town you could put a taller gear (like 4.10) in the differentials, but if you do a lot of highway driving that wouldn't be a great plan. You could swap the engine for another that has more torque, like if you have a 5.3 now you could upgrade to a 6.0, but again, you'll lose some fuel economy. You could do some of the basic bolt on modifications, cold air intake, better flowing exhaust, a tune, and those will help a bit as well.

grounds are extremely important and often missed and/or forgotten. if half the injectors were not working correctly due to lack of ground it probably screwed up the air /fuel ratio and caused the massive backfire you heard, which blew up the engine
@MohawkMotors

The grounds are extremely important, 90% of the times I've had trucks with running issues a ground is the problem. In hind sight, I should have done a continuity test on all the grounds while I had the harnesses apart, they all looked good and the rings were crimped well to the copper conductors, but without a continuity test there's no way of knowing if the conductor was broken inside the insulation. Visually all the ground wires looked good and were in good condition, but you never know unless you actually test them.

You don't have to liek what I did. I conduct business the way I feel is fair for myself and the customer. I know what I'm doing and my customers know that if they provide parts I offer no warranty or guarantee on what they provide, especially a used engine that neither of us know the history of. For the record, after taking it back, he found the cam position sensor to be faulty and causing the PCM to lose cam/crank sync. The knocking I heard was spark knock because the pcm was getting conflicting data from the cam and crank position sensors.

He didn't pay me 6k. Even if he had with the amount of hours i have into it I'd still only have made maybe $75 an hour and that's wayyyy below what I pay myself for custom work like this and wayyyyyyyy below what I value my time at. This was a job that I really lost on which happens. But we both agreed I had put in more than enough time and made more than enough progress for what Matt paid.
