Object Writing: A Secret For Powerful Descriptions

Object Writing: A Secret For Powerful Descriptions.
Even the best writing advice like "be specific" can produce vague writing. Learning to create rich descriptions is one way to quickly improve the quality of your work. But even that suggestion is a bit unclear.
Object writing is an exercise where a writer takes an object and explores all the sense perceptions connected to it. Practising 10 minutes each day can improve your descriptions. It can also stimulate creativity by prompting your mind to consider objects in a visceral manner.
This exercise was explored in "Writing Better Lyrics" by Pat Pattison. You can find his work here: www.patpattison.com/books/
It's also sometimes known as sensory writing.
Please feel free to ask any questions and share your tips for powerful descriptions.
Thanks for tuning in!

Hey, Tj Herrington! Great to hear that you also enjoy this book. Pattison really has some great suggestions and exercises. Object writing is one of my favourite exercises that's really helped me personally. If you try it - I hope it goes well.

What should be included if i were given to write a technical description of an hat (any object as an example)? I have a class test on Thursday please help :)

Hi Happy Patel. Thanks for your question. I'm not sure if you'll be asked to provide a technical explanation of a hat, which may be a bit different than a descriptive explanation. So, I suppose, I'd first get clear on what you're being asked to describe. But if you were to describe a hat. Ask: how does it look, smell, taste?, feel, sound (like if you were to drop it, or scratch it)? then ask how does it make you feel? Are there any actions you can perform with a hat? what is that like? A technical description, though, may be asking you to describe what a hat does - or something along those lines. Best of luck!

Cold Stranger by HappyRon Cold stranger, don’t leave me alone Cold stranger, come be my home. Warm me with your hidden heart. It must be there - the cold an art. Cold stranger, don't leave me alone Cold stranger, is that a smile? Cold strange, that's not your style Did you make a kindly good turn Or was it Slyly meant to burn Cold stranger, I saw a smile. Cold stranger, am I naive? Cold stranger, I don't want to leave My body tells my brain To make me go back again Cold stranger, I want to believe Cold stranger, I head for the door Cold stranger, say you want more Your lizard skin scrapes my soul I only came to rock and roll Cold stranger, I'm closing the door Cold stranger, the warmth has left me. Cold stranger, I don't like what I see I've never felt so aloof Or convinced myself that I'm bulletproof Cold stranger, you took it from me Cold stranger, I feel so alone This is the first draft so would Be interested in your honest thoughts as this is the first time I've used Object Writing in a poem and the firs time I've done a song that is more of Cohen-Poem song then a standard song: kzread.info/dash/bejne/gpiLsrKqg8axj6Q.html

Thanks for sharing, Ron. I really enoy the line "Cold stranger, I saw a smile." It makes me think of however cold this person is, there is some joy there to be expressed. You do a good job of expressing your emotional experience. If you're interested in advancing it I would try to pull out more tangible observations. What was this cold stranger wearing? Did that lend to the sense of coldness you got from them? Was there a certain mannerism that stuck out? Where where you, and what did it look like in there? Some additional things to explore to make it more vivid! :)

Yes, this is a great exercise. I would suggest that cognition is also a sense to add here, i.e. the sensation of thought. Like this off the top of my head, direct into YT: Title: No Cinnamon Either My wife bakes them for me, you know Because the chemicals ... They don't like me much Even though I like them Hours in the childhood orchard Pockets bursting ... Mouth too oft, offended by the tourist worm Bad behavior on all sides It's just the chemicals Doing their duty in the membrane ... Justice stems the gavel of nature Working worms into the brain Kindred by choice, Elective Affinities in trace amounts ... Traced against glass When she bakes them.

Great piece! And you have an excellent point. Inner thought is a good one to explore because it helps connect other ideas, as well as bring them back. It can add a lot of flexibility. Thanks a lot for checking this out and sharing your work.

Hi Zen Guitar Studio. The creator of the video is offering advice found in a book she read! What could be viewed as parroting may alternatively be viewed as passing on knowledge.
