    I have an eating disorder and this oddly helped me. I get obsessed with weight loss videos hoping I can lose more and more. I've been starvating myself and saying it's OK due to being obese. I've lost like 100 lbs and feel like death I feel better knowing my weight isn't as important to my health as eating enough and exercising is. I've been too weak to exercise and I dream of eating enough so I can dance or hike again.

    I just began watching. I think one thing that contributes to obesity and weight gain is consuming large amounts of sugar and corn sweetener. Like in soda and junk food. And cereals.

    I think a lot of people think that’s a big factor, but then how does that explain why some obese people don’t even really care for sugar? Or for those of us who have seen more weight gain when we barely eat sugar and don’t eat fast food or fried foods?

    @@davidahart2476 I always avoided Keto because I knew someone who died of a heart attack while on Atkins and it seemed attributable to the way he was eating. I’m finally on board but it’s less helpful to me now. I’ve changed my eating so much and eat lots of veggies but i still love carbs too much. Between straight carbs to roasted carrots to my staple foods like beans and rice with veggies or salsa, I believe I’ve made it a little harder on myself by eating low-fat, high carb (even if complex carbs) for so many years.

    @@alr293 my parents have neighbours who immigrated from the USA to Australia. They said they had to add sugar to most foods when they came to Australia. They didn’t realise how much sugar was hidden in every day US foods until they came to Australia and tasted the difference including plain bread.

    True, the BMI scale has its shortcomings. But, in general if a person is considered obese or overweight according to the BMI scale, they probably have too much body fat. The exceptions are few and far between.

    Really surprised to see that low-carb vs high-carb doesn't matter in weight loss. Gary Taubes' research (his journalistic reviews of the research, that is) points to insulin as being the way our body stores fat, and that carbs (high-glycemic foods) trigger the greatest release of insulin. Whatever works, I guess.

    The point is that you have to look what they call "low carb". In this study, they call 35% carbs a "low carb" diet! Ridiculous. Low carb is 15%. Contrast what they call a high carb diet with 45%. 10% difference in carbs is just 1 spoon of cereals. Does anyone count that closely any bite he takes? But at 15% of carbs, you basically remove all visible carbs from your diet and be left with the carbs in your meat and some non-starchy veggies. This makes the difference. And don't be confused, because Atkins name is massively misused today by companies selling junk food under his name. Better look for LCHF.

    In the video, Dr. Robert Baron explains that the BMI scale can sometimes give false positives on an individual basis and thus isn't as accurate as other measures of obesity. However, the BMI scale is not a scam. There is a strong correlation between those who have a preponderance of fat and he or she's being ranked in the overweight or obese category according to the BMI scale. Clearly, the United States has an obesity issue. If you can't see that, you're in denial.

    The Recommended Body Mass Weight ratio is different for Asian and Non-Asian for both Men and women w Asian BMW index ranges lower than non Asian index range. Any BMW index Morbidity analysis must be normalized by from death caused by smoking, occupational diseases, drug abuse, alcoholism, and other known disease with known causes - that is not connected to dietary intake and physical exercise.. The fat storage/obesity levels in human is a reflection of not just diet but the metabolism. Fat is created and stored as ketones from excess glucose in glycosis, excess dietary fat must be first broken down into triglycerides and then into glucose to burn or to be restored as fat otherwise it is expelled by the body. There is no direct dietary fat to stored fat pathway... dietary fat takes more energy to metabolize than simple sugars like corn syrup or table sugar. Fat/adipose/lipid cells that store fats as ketone divided into two types: (1) fat cells that surround and protect vital organs called Visceral fat cell. (2) fat cells that is underneath the skin subcutaneous fat cell. The metabolism will always burn fat from visceral fat cells BEFORE burning fat from subcutaneous fat cells... If the body is physically fit ...then excess visceral fat is more dangerous than excess subcutaneous fat. Why? because excess visceral fat can interfere or damage vital organs. An example of this is Non alcoholic Fatty Liver (NAFL) or nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) which can lead to Cancer of the Liver or Cirrhosis - both will kill in a short amount of time.. Wrt to the Liver excessive fat in the liver can put physical pressure on working liver cells and kill them leading to an elevated SGOT SGPT (liver function test)..The standard treatment and only non experimental treatment for NASH is intermittent fasting and a low carb ketogenic diet.... The body cannot burn fat if there are carbohydrates available because glucose will trigger insulin production which will force the body to burn glucose first... one significant challenge is that diet is driven by hunger which is driven by hormones NOT by a logical part of the brain computing calories. dietary fat is useful in that it triggers a hormonal response in a working GI/colon microflora of satiety the feeling of NOT being hungry - so the rational mind can take over and avoid eating too much. However, dietary sugars and carbohydrates can trigger a cognitive high via serotonin hormone which increases feelings of hunger and motivates the subject to eat more calories .. Thus feeding a person sugar and telling them to not eat is hypocritical and amounts to a form of cognitive torture. In addition, some modern medications and other diseases can damage the colon microflora so it does not work - to lose weight the colon microflora has to be in top form ...if not it needs to be repaired or you won't go far.(the first recommended fix is probiotics/eating bacterium that rebalances your GI flora) . So this is a complex challenge...all your proverbial ducks have to be in order...it is easy to lose your way. And if you have a genetic disorder like Type 1 Diabetes...all bets are off...having to compensated for a autoimmune dysfunction or a genetic defect takes customized expertise ...sorry about this long ranting comment.... but i wanted to connect the dots... After taking so long to learn this stuff ,,, I feel frustrated when I don't see the dots connect up...HTH

    He said there is a higher rate of cigarette use among thinner people. Someone could use that to say using cigarettes will make you lose weight. A study found that more men who had hair lose died of a heart attack then men who had no hair lose. A company that sells hair growth medicine used that information to imply if you regrow your hair your chances of a heart attack will decrease. But the study was paid for by the company.

    The talk is a major disappointment for one simple reason: It focuses on WEIGHT loss rather than FAT loss. About half way through diets are compared, and one study showed that on the Ornish diet (vegan, low fat, low protein) participants lost twice as much weight than on the Atkins diet (low carb, high protein). Not once did the presenter hint towards the possibility that on the Ornish diet people might lose mostly muscle mass and bone density. Shame on you, "Dr." Robert Baron.

    The Atkins diet is excellent. That's why when Robert Atkins died, they found he had heart disease and was 258 lbs. Cheeseburgers, pork, and butter FTW!

    Michael Riess LOL, fine, remove the cheeseburgers, and stick with the beef, pork, and butter. It doesn't change the fact that a MAINLY high fat/low carb diet caused this "guru" to be obese with heart disease. It also doesn't change the fact that every scientific epidemiological study has shown that meat and dairy (high fat) cause heart disease, cancer, and diabetes. Check out 'Uprooting the Leading Causes of Death' right here on KZread for the facts. Vegans destroy meat eaters in every single objective measure of health. And this coming from a guy who decided to go on a 30-day vegan challenge one week ago (in other words I ate meat and/or dairy every day over the course of my entire life until 7 days ago). Will almost certainly extend it to the rest of my life because the health risks associated with meat and dairy consumption are too strong.

    Frederick0220 My advice to you would be to be a little less gullible, and not take your facts from vegan (or low carb) propaganda videos on KZread. Read up on Chris Gardner's "a to z" study which showed that the Atkins diet improved markers for heart disease compared to, among others, the Ornish diet. BTW: If you describe Atkins as "beef, pork and butter", that alone shows how sadly misinformed you are about the Atkins diet. But it also shows that the vegan propaganda works.

  • @Frederick0220

    @Frederick0220

    Michael Riess I may check out the "A to Z" study, but keep in mind, I haven't been influenced at all by propaganda. 'Uprooting the Leading Causes of Death' is centered around irrefutable scientific evidence. That's why it's so compelling and that's what solidified me to, at the very least, try out a vegan diet. Check it out. The issue with Gardner's study is that there is no way of telling who/what percentage of these obese women tested were faithful to their assigned diet. A woman could have been assigned to the Atkins, Zone, or Ornish category but had cheat days and not disclosed this information. They received weekly follow-up for 2 months then were left to their own devices for 10 months. Who knows how many of those fatsos veered off course? Also, the sample size wasn't great. 80 people per group is solid but something more like 1,000 would have yielded more objective results.

    Frederick0220 Another parting thought: Visiting your profile, I now understand that you have durianrider on the brain. Talking about vegan propaganda ... the guy's bread and butter is convincing gullible people that veganism is the only correct way to eat. In contrast, what the low carb experts which I endorse say is merely that for some people reducing carbs might be helpful.

    Extra body fat is a result of insulin levels remaining too high over time. Keep insulin levels low by avoiding carbs and only eat twice a day. Boom. Done. Obesity over. The problem is, there is no money in it. I dropped 50 lbs in 5 months doing just that with no exercise. Its just that simple. Its also a lifestyle that you can maintain.
