ABOUT THIS VIDEO
I had an inspiring and heart-warming experience meeting Jacob Brashears from Shear Electronics at NAMM 2024. Jacob, along with his mother Cheryl Brashears (a high performance systems engineer with a storied background) have together created a truly remarkable sounding discrete analog polyphonic synthesizer in the style of the Oberheim 8-voice Iconic SEM Synthesizer. It's aptly called the "Relic". In addition to achieving the classic sound and offering all the familiar routing of it's predecessor, the "Relic" delivers a new take with voltage controllable filter profiles (the ability to transition between HP, LP and BP filters for example), waveform blending, rich intermodulation distortion at fingertip control and all parameters are controllable with the highest resolution digital encoders available. Be sure to keep following and support this next generation synth company of mother and son on their journey to follow their dreams. ABOUT ANTHONY
Anthony's musical touch as both composer and performer is connected with some of the most influential creative minds over the last 40 years. He’s composed and conducted original orchestral scores for over 80 feature films including Young Guns , Internal Affairs , The Man From Elysian Fields , 15 Minutes and Planes, Trains & Automobiles , been commissioned by the Los Angeles Philharmonic for his symphonic work "In the Family Way", written over one thousand TV commercials in a myriad of musical styles, co-founded Levels Audio Post (LA's premiere post production facility) and performed and arranged on big-box-office films and influential hit records such as Michael Jackson's Thriller .
His extensive work as a young arranger, orchestrator and performer for Quincy Jones , Jack Nitzsche , Lamont Dozier , Arthur Rubenstein and Giorgio Moroder was vital in launching his own career. His early years pioneering modular analog synthesizers along with his wide-ranging music scholarship positioned Anthony at the center of the music technology revolution. He attended the University of Southern California School of Music as a piano and composition major.

That interface is something I genuinely dislike. Other than that, congrats for the hard work and pretty impressive result. But why copy Oberheim?
Marcus Ryle and Tom Oberheim need to know of this. Jacob is so talented.

We had lunch with Tom Oberheim back in 2017. As I've said before, he's a brilliant engineer / system designer and an absolutely wonderful guy. I highly recommend saying hi if you happen to see him around. At Synthplex 2022, I spent 25 minutes showing the interface to Marcus Ryle and talking about the supervariable filter & our various other innovations. He offered some very serious advice, and he was very supportive of the project in general, which is a really big deal to me. You might think we're all from different eras, which of course we are. But Tom isn't just a pure analog designer... he was a computer engineer even before Oberheim Electronics. And there's really not much difference between computers in 1964 vs 2024. New assembly code looks slightly different, and the new stuff is smaller and faster. But we're all nerdy engineer type people, so it's very easy to communicate between Tom, Marcus, Cheryl, and I.

@@jacobbrashears You're totally right. I've been programming professionally since 1994 (and non-professionally for 10 years before that). The languages and limitations change but the core concepts are still the same.

I really, really, really hope the Relic is a success. It’s so heartwarming to see a mother and son working on an OB-X tribute together. It really does sound phenomenal. And if Anthony Marinelli approves, they must be doing something right! All the best!!!

Three gifted people sharing passion. With in front of them a creation inspired by one of the geniuses of synthesizers is brilliant to watch. The fact that 'they shrunk the print' and 'raised the kid' is a thing of beauty.

Wow, for some reason, the tuning of the oscillators is what jumps out to me. It's remarkably good, across the whole range in this demo. Obviously, there's a lot more than that going on here...what an inspiring package! I really hope Cheryl and Jacob are able to get this pupper into production!

This is the first comment about oscillator tuning. In reality, it's remarkably good across 8 octaves, and it's stable across 11 octaves. And you're right, it matters much more than people think. The other thing you don't see in the video is the calibration speed: VCO full calibration takes less than 16 seconds, and VCO fast calibration takes 8.2 seconds. It's actually pretty amazing, it might be the only synth that can calibrate 16 VCOs in 8.2 seconds (max).
NAMM 2017, SonicState did an item on the Relic-6, which apparently now has matured into this wonderful synth. Young people and their perseverance… Mad respect to Jacob and his mum -- what a team. And thanks to Anthony for giving us a look at both the synth & the people behind it.

I'm so proud of the both of them. I remember when he unveiled the first prototype years ago. It's so wonderful to finally see it come to market. All of the hard work, time, passion, and love put into this project will soon pay off.
LOVE the distortion on that brass sound! Reminds me of the Matrix-12, but better 😮! The future looks great! haha

Not sure what’s bigger, the desktop synth or this guys charisma. I love it!!! Mom is a bonus. I’d buy it just for that. Old school with fresh ideas
Sound is very rich and unique; instead of the digital or thin clarity style this sounds robust, full, and opinionated in the best way
It's so exciting to see the younger generation carry on experimenting with analog synths. Digital is great and has it's usefulness, but c'mon...give me an analog synth any day! Best of luck to this enterprising young man and his mom!
The filters are awesome, and they have a nice interface, and they sound so great. Can wait to get my hands on one.Step sequencer will take it out of the roof.

Imagine having a mom that loves you that much? That’s truly incredible seriously what a lucky kid. And really what an amazing project I absolutely love the sound of this synth. I’m not sure what the price point will be when it gets to production but I’m sure it will be well out of my range unfortunately. Still very cool and as a synthesizer obsessed person I’m glad this thing exists.

Yes it is amazing, it's due to hard work, so let's discuss your channel. Why are you faking all your views and subs when others work so hard to achieve what they do? You got 1.3K subs in 2 weeks, before then you had 19, and now you show no growth. Aren't you embarrassed of this?
