OBD-II on an OBD-I Mazda or Ford

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

How to connect an OBD-II connector to a pre OBD-II Mazda or Ford.
In this video we explain how to hook up a cheap OBD-II scanner to a car without an OBD-II port. This involves using the Data Link Connector or DLC found on most 90's Ford and Mazda vehicles. With just a few wires we can now read fault codes and sensor information directly from the DLC.
This makes it far easier to diagnose issues with these vehicles that would have previously required some very expensive and these days hard to find tools. This is all done using the J1850 protocol. All that is needed are 4 wires with some terminals crimped on each end, a cheap OBD-II scanner, and either the torque app for Android or the Forscan software.
Please note that not all scanners will work with this and likewise not all cars with a DLC will be able to connect.
YOU DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK, I WILL NOT BE HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY DAMAGE TO YOURSELF, YOUR TOOLS OR YOUR CAR.

I've been searching, for a easier way to read, diagnostic codes, on the early Ford's and Mazda's. This is a great idea, very clever. Thanks.

As a subscriber to the retro channel I got quite a surprise to you see you popping up here (didn't know you had an older channel, I ended up here because I have the same port on my Ford Laser 2002). I guess our population of nerds in this country is small, and we'll all run into each other eventually

I have US MECS-II type. So if I connect only 3 wires ( +B, GND , MEN) according to your video at 3:42, it should work like yours, except you use 4 wires because yours is EU MECS-II?

Did you try the pin-out as shown in the upper right, with GND, +B, MEN? My Previous car, a Mazda 323 BJ 1.5 1997 could atleast blink out engine codes (shorted MEN to GND if i recall), and abs codes (TBS to GND) - this was from before i ever knew of wiring to OBD2 :) With that said, also pay attention to the lower right pin-out, it specifically says 626 GF 1997-1999 (which is my current car, and it works great for me with those 4 wires)

It's quite possible the adaptor is not wired correctly for this case. I didn't know they were even available, hence why I just connected the wires directly
