O:Ring update! (a potential o-ring + t-hook replacement?)

Фильм және анимация

Check out our solution for an o-ring and t-hook replacement: the O:Ring!
Initially developed to hold together the Operation: Recall bucks, we are now digging in on testing for 3.75” action figures. So far so good!

    Me either! They sculpted at double the size and then at the factory they can scale down the master sculpt so it keeps the detail but is 3.75" tall. Crazy right??

    @@TheBoglin Yeah, there’s a very engrossing video on a channel called RetroToyReview titled ‘The Story of the Sectaurs - A Toy Documentary.’ It’s nearly 29 minutes long uploaded on August 24th, 2018. A sculptor named Jeff Lawrence who worked for Coleco Industries from 1982-1987 was interviewed about Warriors of Symbion. He discussed how 2 sculptors were in charge of creating Prince Dargon & General Spidrax. Jeff got the job to do the bodies 3 times production size resulting in 18 inch final clay sculptures. As Jeff said “So they were large figures but that’s a nice way to work. It’s easier to make details on a larger figure and then they pantagraph 'em down and all the detail sharpens up and it really turns out nice.”

    I never get tired of watching these videos Carson. I literally can not wait to see Bill Merklyn's sculpted details on these bucks. And that combined O-Ring/T-Bar is amazing.

    Re: long-term durability: if the O:Rings have issues, 1) Will old school t-hooks and o-rings be a compatible replacement? and/or 2) will replacement O:Rings be available? Also, do you foresee any potential issues with the hips since this is a softer material than the old t-hooks?

    We will investigate all of these issues before making the determination to go with traditional t-hook/o-ring combos, or the new O:Ring. If we do run with the O:Ring, we’ll have replacements for sure!

    Very informative stuff Carson, thanx for sharing! I'm wondering tho, since Bill's sculpts will have to go into mass production, will they use a bit of their charm? I mean, will his original sculpted prototypes differ much from the final figure that will storm the market? :) Like, with our Retelos be different from Your own original Retelo?

    Yes, there’s inevitable “compression” of the details. But this is how they achieved the ARAH results. Check out Bill’s creator profile to see dozens of his original figure sculpts. It’s fascinating to see the detail in those original works: www.3djoes.com/bill-merklein.html

    @@3djoes Thanx! I've already jumped into that article :) BTW, i saw that some body parts on those figures ( lower legs ) were often duplicated ( which i guess saved a bit of work and money ). Do You intend to use the same trick in OR on some of the characters?

    @@WritersQuestForGlory we are not looking to cut cost in that way. I don’t think the design of any character calls for matching lower legs.

    So my big question will this fit old school gi joes and is their any chance of these being sold in packs cause im sure theirs more then a few collectors that would love something sturdy like this to replace broke t bars and orings

    Yes, and yes. I am working on a trademark and patent now I am also working with a local factory to get them produced in the necessary material to ensure longevity. These prototypes are made in resin, so I will need to get a two piece mold, cut, and we will likely use poly propylene or polyethylene.

    looks good. i was worried about them snapping apart. so, let's pretend a couple years down the way this o:ring breaks. i have a bunch of t-bars and o-rings, could i replace this with them ok? like, the ball that goes into the leg is it the same size as the ball on the original t-bar? would say, i use the torso from this on a vintage o-ring body as a custom - would it work without this o:ring?

  • @3djoes

    @3djoes

    Жыл бұрын

    YES! These would be interchangeable with vintage parts. I think there could be a huge market for these to replace the aging t-hooks/o-rings if the O:Ring proves reliable under stress testing at the 1:18 scale. Time will tell!
