One of the best songs in Eurovision and definitely the true winner of 1996. Portugal's highest entry in Eurovision and only 6th, that says all about all the underrated entries of Portugal. If it was up to me Portugal would have won at least 6 times...

Meanwhile Portugal in the recent 7 years: - One win (2017, with record amount of points) - Three top 10 results (2017, 2022, 2024) - Four top 15 results (2017, 2021, 2022, 2024) - Only one nq in that span of time (2019) Amazing country in Eurovision

I am Irish and I do not think that 'The Voice' should have won in 96. This was my true winner.

Lucia is also an actress and can be seen on the british movie "Love Actually".

I checked the scores and if either Spain, Estonia, Malta, Slovenia, Ireland, Poland, or Slovakia gave 12 points to Portugal, it would have reached 3rd place with 102 points. It's a shame too, even at 6th place it's still underrated. It should have won over Ireland! Although, it was almost disqualified in the pre-qualifying round as it placed 18th with 32 points! This was a very weird year. If there was one year it should have won, it should have been this entry.

@@JeSuisRene Spain and Portugal played hardball back in the day (still do, to a degree). They either loved each other or it was one-sided as all get-out (or, in the case of '96, neither-sided).

@@fl7484 Pues tampoco las canciones portuguesas son para tirar cohetes. Los españoles hemos ganado dos veces, cuatro segundos puestos, 1 tercer puesto, dos cuartos puestos, un quinto puesto. Vosotros salvo la victoria de Sobral a lo más que llegasteis en 60 años es al sexto puesto de Lucía Muñiz. Respecto a que gritamos mucho no se a que parte de España te refieres, quizá al sur pero vosotros de Lisboa para abajo tampoco sois monjes cartujos porque habláis tan alto o más que los andaluces.

I watched Love Actually for the first time last year and I never knew she was in it

The song is a hymn to the Portuguese language, it makes a very beautiful marriage, with an extraordinary harmony between the words, between the Portuguese spoken in Portugal, in Brazil, in Africa and in other parts of the world. We need to know the Portuguese language to understand this beauty. Of course, all languages have lyrics and poems like this.

Very intricate song (e.g. 0:43, 0:54 or 1:08) - i like it a lot

Portugal was among the favouries this year. Indeed was the fan´s and press favourite. Ireland was the big favourite....I think the song has an amazing instrumental and that folk approach with cultural heritage elements worked very well. The reaction of the crowd says everything...But Lucia didn´t had an outstanding performance thats why she missed the top5...

Well, apparently according to Terry Wogan on the BBC transmission, the bookies' favourites were Ireland, the United Kingdom and Sweden. But I personally think this should have made the top 3, along with Norway and Sweden.

@@JeSuisRene Portugal was among the favorites this year I can assure you. there are some videos from another national broadcast (spain and the netherlands for example) and they said that before the entry. Also the fans and the music director of that Eurovison said:" i cannot vote, but for my personal taste Portugal has the best song this year". The song is good but the vocals were not that good..However 6th place is pretty good for Portugal . Uk has the biggest hit, but the live performance was...well forget it :)

Have previously tried to learn Portuguese but am better if I see lyrics. Are they available somewhere for this video? Listening to spoken Portuguese is different from other Romance languages.

Actually not because 1996 was the only case where the songs were chosen based on the voting of the national juries instead of the process of relegations
