O Gauge Live Steam in Wiltshire Aug 2020

Ғылым және технология

Year 2020 was so different from usual. This video captures a little bit of near normality when I opened my garden in August. Remember the time when you could meet with friends. The sun shone (most of the time) and we had a great time raising steam - but limited to 6 people.
I hope you enjoy a reminder of what we can get back to once most people have had the vaccine and the cases of Covid-19 have significantly declined. There was frost on the ground today while I edited the video and the temperature did not rise above freezing - even in Wiltshire.
Thanks to Graham who provided some of the clips.

Thanks for your comments. I look forward to being able to have more engines and people this summer to fill the tracks.

Thanks Dave, always quality a real uplift in these difficult times. Steam engines always talk and tell how they're really doing!

Yes that is the fascination of live steam - they appear to be alive.

Dave - most of these locos are scratch built. There are some complete locomotives available on eBay. These are usually external fired - which work well in low draft situations. The good thing is that they are easy to operate as there is no need to worry about blower / water pump.

Hi there, love the videos. What track do you run these on - which track can accept course scale wheels?

Hi Owen, These tracks are to O gauge fine standard with check rails set for 29mm back to back (or 28.5). I have a Bassette Lowke Mogul which cannot run through most points. My plan is to ease the wheels by 0.5 each side and they should be fine. The greater depth of flanges with coarse scale is not usually a problem. Do you have a coarse scale live steamer?

That North Staffs 4-4-0, I sure like it. Curious about the boiler on it, is it a full proper locomotive type? Or something else?

If by proper boiler you mean internal fire in the firebox with fire tube to the smoke box, then yes. There is a meths burner (multiple wicks) in the firebox. Some cross water tubes in the top of the firebox. Rafe only usually puts in a single firetube with cross water tubes and also a super heater.

@@DrDave_63395 Yes that sounds like a locomotive type to me. My other thought was that it could be a Smithies, but my question's been answered now. I find myself looking at O-gauge more often as of late, your videos certainly contributing to that! With the magic of the vast internet, I've been able to gander at some designs, and managed to find a couple designs that appeal to me. Although actually building any O-gauge is a ways off for me at the moment, I have been looking at Martin Evans' Royal Scot, and was also wondering if you had any words of wisdom, were I to buy the plans and start putting something together?

@@williamplatt1680 Knowing Rafe, it will definitely NOT be a Smithies. BTW this boiler type does work quite well. Problem is that the paint can get discoloured with excess heat. As to where to start - Tee publishing have LBSC plans and writeup for BAT and OWL locomotives. Gauge O Guild Live Steam book has much practical advice. I started with the LNER Q5/Q6 design known as NETTA by LBSC. It is in the ME 1954/5. Another option is to get the G1MRA Project book and multiply the dimension by 0.7 (convert from 10mm to 7mm / ft) There is a Facebook group called 'O gauge 7mm live steam' where several people are building locomotives.

These are quite impressive however it would be easier to operate if the valves worked on remote control.

Actually with a level track you can set the regulator and they will keep a near constant speed. The safety valve means the pressure in the boiler is near constant. With an open cab it is difficult to hide the servos for radio control. That said, some people had fitted RC. BTW some shots (in other videos) where the engine appears to come to a stop in the station and then move away is done be someone holding onto the last carriage :-)
