It was, for this context. Before that, back to the 60s, it was used as a way to show disrespect to the country. 1960s to 2020-ish, it was only used as a way of expressing anti-imperialist sentiment. It was the same statement as burning the flag. It wasn't until QAnon that anybody displayed it upside down to symbolize "a country in distress." That was only ever a signal that a person was in distress. And that custom is completely useless now, because a cop is never going to look twice at an inverted flag, today. They're just gonna assume it's some MAGA homeowner, instead of investigating to see if the person needs help.

As one of our highest judges he should do his best to remain neutral or keep his personal opinions on these topics out of the public/media. I don’t think it’s offensive, more a conflict of interest given his profession. But all the comments focus on the flag itself. Kind of telling on which news outlets you are watching, because most have stated that it means distress (for the first flag). That is not why he says the flag was flown in that manner, so it's odd that so many people in the comments are trying to say that is the reason he did it. This is now a second flag in which is obvious why he is flying them in the manner he has, and he already stated the first was in response to a neighbor saying negative things about Trump. This would make the justice compromised and should recuse himself from any decisions concerning Trump or the upcoming election, as well as judge Thomas.

If Alito or Thomas wants to be like a typical citizen who works in a factory or shopping center then they can gladly resign from their position and can be free to pick political sides, wear political gear, and put political bumper stickers on their cars. Justices and judges are not allowed to express biases. Political or otherwise. Judges are required by law to have no biases on any cases. If any form of bias is found, the judge is required by law to recuse themselves, in the hopes of finding a different unbiased judge. That is how the system has worked since the founding of America. To be against it would be to wish to forever change America.

My brother and I had a flag in our big bay window prior to the election. Brother then hung it upside for a while, in spite of Biden. Our fathers a Vietnam vet, and I’m an army vet too and I finally told my brother to either put it right side up or take it down cause it was getting to me. Freedom of expression is an American right, but it got to be a month or more later and that was enough.

Nope, I don't care if there's another connotation between the sentence and a group; separation between church and state; raising a flag like that shows a bias I'm not okay with. There does not need to be anything more to this other than that one sentence. Separation of church and state.

Any American can fly any flag. That's what our veterans fought and fight for.

Alito didn't say the flag was upsidedown to express his belief that the country was in distress. He said that his wife put the flag in that position because she was fueding with a neighbor who was displaying a negative trump sign in his yard. Given this information it shows that the flag was displayed for "hateful" reasons. Additionally, another controversial flag was displayed at their beach house which suggests that the Alito's really like expressing their partisan views via their flags. Kinda childish but very concerning when one considers the fact that Samuel Alito is supreme court justice.

I wonder if any of you guys will actually look up what it means and not be like joy Behar and look like an absolute fool.

When you work for the government and you aren't an elected official, you are required to keep things like political affiliation to yourself. Judges are supposed to leave their politics out of their rulings and not mention them in any way at the job. I don't think anyone should be exempt from accountability, including the Supreme Court. Bias and bigotry shouldn't play a role in the government, especially not the courtroom.

That flag was originally used on a squadron of 6 frigates commissioned under Washington’s authority as commander-in-chief of the Continental Army in October 1775. It is also the official maritime ensign of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, but the “Appeal To Heaven” was removed in 1971. It’s called the “Pine Tree Flag” in more common parlance.

If you're a news anchor and you are being ordered to cover this story, you should quit. This is one of those stories that will plague you for the rest of your career.

If her entire family wasn't all wrapped up on politics, she'd have seen that sign, thought "so what" and went on with her day. So instead she responded by flying a flag in the same way which was at that time very popular with the terrorists trying to overthrow America to replace it with a fascist dictatorship. You don't fly your flag upside down because you didn't like a yard sign. You put up your own yard sign. When you see a sign you don't like, do you think "the nation is in distress" or do you just think someone has a different opinion than yours and go about your day? Because if you go about your day, you're more qualified to be an SC Justice, in that you could *possibly* be *impartial* like how judges are supposed to be, than Thomas Alito will ever be. That guy is so partisan he cites laws from the 1600s in his quest to make pregnant women become property of the state. Laws from before we were a country. He ignored laws made by US lawmakers and preferred the laws written by that witch burner guy from 1620. He should run for office because he's too wrapped up in politics to be "blind justice."
