NYC Travel Tips: 10 Things to Know Before You Go to New York City

Things YOU need to know before you travel to New York City. NYC consists of 5 Boroughs, Manhattan, the most famous and dense is also the smallest. Brooklyn is the most populated, with 2.6 million residents (total of 8.5M in NYC). Queens is the largest, and “most ethnically diverse” county in the US. Bronx is the northenmost and the only one that is part of the US Mainland. Staten Island is the most suburban

Manhattan is BIG -- don’t expect to walk the whole thing in a day
5 days is probably the sweet spot. No less than 3 days.
Wear comfortable shoes
Girls: Sex and the City says everybody walks in heels all the time -- not so much.
Don’t try and walk everywhere, the subway is there for a reason.
NYC is Expensive! Everything costs more here.
The city runs on tips
New Yorkers aren’t really rude.. They are just efficient.
Expect to pay to use a bathroom, there really aren’t many good public toilets
Weather
For about 8 months out of the year it is chilly. And, for about 3 months it’s just plain miserable. Be prepared for really cold and windy, or really hot, humid, and muggy. Be prepared to rain always.
Summer: Highs 84F/29C Lows: 68F/20C (July)
Winter: Highs: 38F/3C - Lows 25F/-4C (January)
Winter Footwear -- puddles the size of small lakes
Layers
Best months: September, October, May and June
Getting in
Airports
LaGuardia (M80 Bus)
JFK (Airtrain to Howard Beach then catch the subway)
Newark (30 mins on Amtrak or NJ Transit)
Beware of unnoficial cabs
Trains -- to Penn Station or Grand Central. Grand Central is amazing.
Megabus if you’re on the east coast
Driving -- if you do drive in… just plan to park and leave your car for the duration of your stay.
Transportation in NYC
The Subway mostly runs north south… east and west you’ll be walking it
If you’re in NYC for awhile, get a week or month long Subway pass
Avoid the empty subway car, it’s empty for a reason. Hot or smelly.
Don’t lean on the subway poles… more people can hold on to it
Pay attention to the local, or express trains.
Get in the subway at the correct entrance, going the right direction, and for the right line
There are tons of yellow taxis… but they are notoriously hard to hail in bad weather
Flagship city for Uber, Lyft. But traffic is slow.
If you’re running late, don’t take a taxi. You WILL get stuck in traffic.
Walking -- don’t drop in the middle of the sidewalk
Ferrys for a different way to get around
NYC Ferry - East River route for some of the best views
Citi Bikes -- 10,000 bikes and 600 stations -- Download the citi bike app - $12/day
Bus Tours -- skip it
Times Square
Crowded, chaotic, dazzling and overpriced
Is really small -- and there’s not much to do once you get there.
Whatever you do, don’t eat here. The food is overpriced and mediocre due to high rent.
Broadway Shows
Book way ahead of time
There’s a vibrant “Off-Broadway” Scene
Book of Mormon and Avenue Q are my favorites
Check out the TKTs booth for cheap tickets or online now
Parks (Central Park & the High Line)
Central Park Is really big -- and no subway across
Central Park is 800 Acres
Strawberry Fields, Sheep’s Meadow, ice skating rinks.
Visit the High Line on a weekday to avoid the crowds
Big Apple Attractions
Statue of Liberty -- book ahead of time
Cant get tix for the Statue of Liberty, ride the Staten Island Ferry for free!
Empire State Building -- Long Lines
Top of the Rock is really cool -- great views of the Empire State
New WTC Observatory
9/11 Memorial ($2 Reservation Fee
Museum of Modern Art
Metropolitan Museum of Art
American Museum of Natural History (Suggested Admission)
Chelsea Market
New York Public Library
Flatiron Building
Shopping along 5th Avenue
Hotels
Expensive!
Save some money by staying in Queens, Brooklyn, or Staten Island
If money is no object -- the Park Hyatt is amazing
Marriott Marquis on Times Square in the middle of it all
Food
Food carts and trucks can be really good
The Halal Guys is a “must eat”
Grimaldi’s Pizza (In Brooklyn under the bridge) and Lomardis in Little Italy
Pastrami on Rye
Shake Shack started here
Chinatown Get noodles at Xi’an Famous Foods (location in Chinatown)
Bagels with Lox
New York Hotdogs from Gray’s Papaya
New York Cheesecake

This was a good video. I enjoyed hearing what others think about the city I was born and live in. But there were a few things that you may have left out. Aside from the subway (which is a nightmare when you live here), walking, ferries and cabs, we also have MTA buses that coincide with our subways. They are good for traveling from west to east in Manhattan. And anyone coming here needs a Metrocard in order to ride our MTA transportation. Also, aside from all the attractions that you suggested, we have zoos in every borough, the Aquarium in Brooklyn which is located near our famous Coney Island, Ellis Island, Roosevelt Island, Botanical Gardens in the Bronx, a ton of historical tours, the list goes on and on. Our restaurants are expensive along with everything else but some are worth the money spent. Also, when traveling through Central Park the best time is during the day. And finally, we are not chilly 8 months of the year and only 2 months hot. It starts getting hot around here in May and these past few years it hasn't let up until the end of September. So it can be difficult to navigate our weather some times. All and all, this was a great video and there is a million things to do here in New York. And to everyone that watches this, don't just limit your visit to just Manhattan. The other boroughs have a ton to offer as well. The famous Yankees play in the Bronx, the Mets in Flushing Queens, the Knicks and Rangers in Manhattan and the Nets and Islanders in Brooklyn. So 1 visit just won't do :). Sorry for the long comment lol.

@@danielinnicg2114 Weather is variable for St. Patrick's Day. It is usually cold and blustery but can be warm. I remember one St P's Day it was in the 70s F, but usually is 40 to 50 F. One time there was a blizzard. So plan accordingly. I imagine you can bring a child into a bar if ordering food but not sure. Have fun in my great city if you come!

I've lived in New York all my life. I always like to check out videos like these to see how accurate they are. It's always interesting to see what non-New Yorkers have to say about my city. I must thank you for mentioning ahead of time that there's more to New York than Manhattan. Personally I hate the fact that everyone seems to think that Manhattan is the only fun place to go to when visiting New York. There are plenty of other beautiful places to see if you know where to look. I live in Queens & there's a lot of nice places to see here. And as far as Manhattan goes, I hate going there. Anyway, great video. I quite enjoyed it.

Most important rule: Move or get out of the way. The sidewalks & stairs are like roads, do NOT block or stand in the middle, stand aside. Walk on the right side, walking is just like driving, same rules apply. For getting East/West in MH, just use cross-town buses or ones that go E/W. Anyway, good video, he's actually got good advice! Also: Atomic Bagel by Columbia University, go there in the morning when they're hot and fresh and DON"T toast them.

If money's an issue, I've read that the Salisbury on 57th st is very reasonably priced, clean, friendly, and attentive, and is basically within walking distance of a lot of the Midtown attractions...It's not high end, but are you going to sit in your Hotel room, when there's so much to see, and do within walking distance?..I never stayed there. This is what I read from many reviews, about a year ago.

Haha, kind of. Actually, what you want to do is LOOK in the direction you're walking, like when crossing a street or making a turn. This indicates to others where you're going and we all subconsciously read and interpret that intention correctly. Try it and you'll never bump into anyone crossing a busy street downtown. :-)

that's what I do in Vienna too actually. Not wanting to show off but I feel like I am walking faster than 90% of the people around me. Don't know why that is, I don't even feel like I am walking super fast, but you always want to read where people are going. Worst are those looking at their smartphones and stop at points like at the exit of escalators lol. Another question: Is it ok to wear a T-shirt and short trousers in NYC during summer? :D It seems to me that new yorkers have much greater feeling for fashion and styles but maybe that's just my opinion. What do you think?

Many people arrive in NYC without being in a New York State of mind, and in a fast paced environment like NY that’s a sure way of getting into a chaotic and expensive mess. Also, NYC is generally-speaking a very safe place, but with any large metropolitan city you still need to keep your wits about you and be aware of your surroundings; especially, if you plan on riding the metro late at night. The trick to an enjoyable vacation, regardless of where you happen to be visiting, is prior research and advanced planning. Great video.

It is not my intention to offend anyone but after visiting Times Square for 30 minutes, don't waste any more time (unless you want to eat at chain restaurants or buy postcards). - If you're staying in Jersey, don't bust your butt getting to the city early. The commuter rush is mostly over by 9 on that end and any leftover "monthly-pass-only" parking spaces at NJ Transit stations open up to day tickets. I've had bad luck depending on the hotel shuttle and am within driving distance of the area so I have my car with me anyway. - That being said, don't bother driving in Manhattan. It's next-level stress and pricey as hell. There's a reason the locals stereotypically don't own cars. - The Times Square McDonald's *does* have free public restrooms, so it's useful for that.

Awesome video! I am from NYC and these tips are very accurate. I would add for the taking the bus part: there are buses that go across through Central Park, from the East to West, vice versa, for example the bus on 14th street, 86th street and 96th street, just to name a few. Have fun in the Big Apple!

I'm from New York City and Chris you did a good job describing my hometown. I'll add a couple of things more. Other great places to visit in NYC (especially in the summer) are the best team in the history of American sports The NY Yankees (in the Bronx). Also in the Bronx is The Bronx Zoo which has a ton of animals to watch from a safe distance. Also, the iconic and most famous concert arena in the United States called Madison Square Garden where Led Zepellin shot their movie The Song Remains The Same and where many stars like Elvis, Sinatra, Ali and sports teams like the Knicks and Rangers call home. In Brooklyn, you can go see the Botanical Gardens, and Coney Island Amusement Park. In Queens, you can get tickets to the tennis U.S. Open which is one of the Tennis grand slam events of the world and you can go see the baseball team The Mets. When taking the ferry to Staten Island, the 5th borough for me to mention, you can see the Statue of Liberty like Chris said. The only other major attraction connected to Staten Island is The Verrazano Bridge which is the longest suspension bridge in the U.S. and is the bridge seen in the iconic movie Saturday Night Fever. You can also go on Ghost Tours Vans and other major attractions like Macy's superstore on 34 street, the Jacob Javits Center, 30 Rock where tv shows like Jimmy Fallon, Saturday Night Live and in the summer The Today Show has live free concerts at Rockefeller Center with the biggest singers on the planet giving free concerts. One note..... never, ever take a taxi or uber car during the day time anywhere in Manhattan. The traffic is horrific and getting worse. If you are in any of the other boroughs you can take a taxi most times without a traffic jam. To save money I recommend checking out Bed and Breakfast rooms in private houses in Queens, New York through Craigslist. I also recommend that you go to a super market and buy a lot of food when you arrive in New York and keep it in your hotel room to avoid expensive restaurants. Bring a hot plate stove to your hotel room to heat up your food. Cheers.

I also want to add that New York City parks are a great place to see birds, especially during spring migration and again during fall migrations because it is located along the Atlantic flyway. Hundreds of species have been observed. There are free guided bird walks.

New York was expensive for sure. I found the people to be really friendly. We were lucky with a Holiday Inn Express on 29th, still expensive but at least it was nice and reasonably well located. Loving your reviews, I hope you get to check our our NY trip vlog on my channel, we had a great time.

jmkjr33 hi, it was OK, I'd be happy to stay there again. It was on 29th, I think, not far from Penn station, it was pretty easy to get around anywhere from there. The room was surprisingly nice, not big but did the job and wasn't shabby. We thought noise might be an issue but it was ok, the couple next door were a bit noisy first thing in the mornings, (say no more), but it was mostly quiet. People had complained a bit about breakfast in Tripadvisor and it did get pretty busy but we just about managed to find a place to sit each day and have a reasonable breakfast, tea, coffee, juice, bagels etc. Like anywhere in NY it wasn't cheep but it was about the best deal we could find at the time. Do check out our vlog from NYC on my channel, it does have a couple of shots of the hotel in. Hope that helps.

Glad you told people about the borough's. I lived in Queens and that is a great, cheap place to eat. I found NY'ers to be pretty friendly. I only lived there for 2 years but miss it a lot. Walk to the extreme right or walk fast. Major rule. Blocking the sidewalks is like blocking the roads in any other city.
