It is 100% political. Walmart wanted to put stores in NYC, but the local politicians wanted none of it. Walmart just built stores on the outskirts of NYC as a result.

This saves Walmart from having to leave due to shoplifting.

If I have learned one thing from Louis Rossmann it is that there is a LOT of empty buildings in NYC. But they all have inflated "rental cost per square foot" plus they ALL lie about the square footage to drive that up even further.

I live in a smallish town where the poverty rate is pretty high. When I was a teacher, the child poverty rate was over 60%. Our school provided free breakfast for every student; no income questions were asked. We have a Walmart that is only a grocery store. The prices are low, but they're smaller and offer less variety than other grocery stores. What they do have, they sell at a lower price than anywhere else.

I remember watching a Frontline documentary about Walmart and they said over 50% of Dial soaps revenue is from Walmart. If Walmart were to randomly stop doing business with Dial, more than half of their revenue would drop from one buyer. Walmart knows this and this is why they can strong arm Dial into lower prices. This is the sheer amount of buying power they have.

I have family members working for WalMart. People currently employed by the nearby Targets are constantly applying to get hired-on at their Mart of Wals. Nuff said? Also, WalMart is so big, SO BIG, they don't pay bribes, payoffs, and kickbacks, the three mainstays of "doing business" in NYC.

In the early 2000s Nordstrom did a viability study on opening a store in NYC. At that point, If I remember correctly, they had under 100 stores at that time. Their analysis of the cost of opening a store inside the city was more than all their other stores combined - so they put the plan on ice for well over a decade before opening their 2 stores in Manhattan. It’s amazing that so many mom and pop stores are able to get through the process in the city. It’s actually a miracle.

One of the advantages of being second or third place in a market is that the biggest dog tends to draw most of the criticism. You see the same thing in fast food where McDonald's tends to get singled out whenever there's a controversy even though Burger King and Wendy's operate almost identically.

My husband worked for an Amazon fulfillment center and it was the worst job he had ever had. The demands were outrageous and he had to quit with heath issues related to the job.

Fun fact: Walmart has store in Valley Stream, NY and if you go 50 feet from the back of the store it will be Queens which is technically NYC border.

That Brooklyn Costco is on another level. So packed; fighting for a parking space and shopping cart. I’ve lived around the US and have lived in Korea and no where have I seen such a chaotic Costco. The rest of your video is very insightful. Thanks!

Having worked at a walmart neighborhood market in Oklahoma city suburb, some of the things publicized out unsafe work conditions are true. Trucks were coming in unpalletized. This means items are just stacked to the ceiling. Large heavy items like bottled water could end up on the top. When trucks would arrive, you had to be very careful when unloading, so something didn't fall on you. The pay sucked and the amount of work you were expected to do enormous.

Walmart hasn't used the everyday low prices tag line for years. They are not the low-cost store on everything anymore..

I think the whole store size is the biggest challenge. They require a crazy footprint for everything from floor space to storage. Costco has the unique advantage of nearly everyone needing a car. So they can make it in the middle of nowhere.

The main reason there is no Walmart in NYC is they don't allow employees to unionise and democRATs use unions as cash cows.

I remember on my first visit to Vermont seeing a super Walmart-it had a handful of customers. People in Vermont love the Mom & Pop stores and so do I.
