DISCLAIMER
I was not paid for this video, however NUX did provide me with the pedal for free. This does not alter my opinions of the product in any way.
In this video I take a look at the NUX Steel Singer Drive. This is a Dumble style overdrive modelled on the Steel String Singer amplifier as used by John Mayer, Stevie Ray Vaughan and more.
This pedal does everything from high headroom cleans to throaty breakup tones, but can a $50 pedal really sound like a $40,000 Dumble amp?
It certainly sounds good but I've never played a real Dumble to compare it.
In the video I am using my early 1980s Tokai Strat style guitar and my Shergold Provocateur guitars. Both guitars are running into the Blackstar Studio 10 6L6 which is mic'd up with a Lewitt Audio LCT 440 microphone.

Excellent demo. Covered all the bases in a methodical and professional way. My son bought me one for Christmas so it's nice to get a well presented overview to start with. I would not have thought of backing off all the Gain and just using the Volume and Filter. Very helpful/

I'm trying this pedal for about a week now. I love it! Is it a dumble sound? When I use my 335, gain at minimum, level 3/4 max and plying with the filter I'm getting some lovely tones on the neck pick-up. When I increase the gain, bridge pickup, I'm getting in the Robben Ford territory. No it's no dumble amp but with the Victory V40 deluze amp in conjunction with this pedal I'm getting real close. I like it.

Well, the Vertex SSS is just a copy of a Dumble SSS amp. Every company borrows an idea from something else. Look how many pedals are built off the Tubescreamer circuit. The Dumble amp itself isn't even an original concept. The first one started as a modded Fender Bassman.

I got one. And did a side-by-side with my other ODs. IT IS NOT A DUMBLE PEDAL! Turns out this guy is mostly in the tube screamer realm (tonally - it may have a different circuit topology). It sounds NOTHING AT ALL LIKE MY TWO DUMBLE PEDALS (Joyo TaiChi and Tomsline Dumbler). The Vertex pedal it kinda clones wasn't a gainy pedal pedal either, like this one. Marketing bullshit. Sigh... Its mid-range is a bit higher on the eq scale than standard, much like my MXR Custom Modified Badass OD with its 'mids' button engaged. The Steel Singer has a bit more low-mids/upper-lows than a standard TS, so it growls a bit more, but basically has the same bass freq cut off. What makes it stand out is the gain knob is smooth. Noon on the SS is like 10 o'clock on the MXR and my standard TS. So it's easier to hone in on the right amount of low-gain. Also, it's less fizzy, so it has a bit more clarity. And it's a bit less compressed, so it feels a tad more 'open'. I suspect they used a different set of diodes in the clipping section than is standard. All-in-all, it's good and does what you'd want a TS to do. Nice lush OD for chord work, but great mid-honk for solos. Given the subtle differences I've detailed above, it may be a better fit for some amps than a standard TS.

Hey Andrew, I think one thing to remember is that Dumble pedals all sound different based on what Dumble they are based on. The TaiChi looks to be based on the Zen Drive pedal which is more of a Dumble Overdrive Special vibe, which is a different feel to the Steel String Singer. Not that I am saying outright this sounds exactly like an SSS. I've never played a real Dumble so I can't compare. I think you're right with the TS comparison, because one thing that seems to be commonplace is that Dumble players often play with TS style pedals too, so what we associate as "The Dumble Sound" is likely to be the sum of the amp itself PLUS something else. Each Dumble was technically built and tuned for a specific player so really as a whole, the amps don't have a specific sound. I often think when a pedal claims to be a Dumble style pedal, or alludes to that, it's more specifically aimed at a players tone. To my ears, this pedal really sits in that John Mayer/Stevie Ray kinda vibe in the lower gain region... which is Strat into a clean Dumble with a TS infront. It's an interesting tonal ballpark I think with so many variables and most of us are just going at it with a best guess because 95% of us have never, or probably never will play a real one. I find this pedal to be less mid forward than a typical TS, to me, it definitely has a slightly more scooped character, but I am playing it with a Strat into a 6L6 amp too... perhaps into a Marshall style it would be a different beast altogether. It's such an interesting rabbit hole to go down I think!

It sounds good, but that is waaayy too much gain either for Mayer or even Stevie Ray.

Yeah, in the higher settings for sure. But, in the lower settings it does the job I think. I think the lower gain tones in this pedal sound better than the higher gain tones.

It's actually a rip off of a vertex pedal

Visually, it's definitely taken its cues from the Vertex, but the circuit is different. But... visually Mason took inspiration from the classic Dumble look. Mason actually did a video on the Vertex channel where he compared this side by side to his own Steel String style pedal and he concluded that they were totally different sounding pedals. As well as the circuits being different, they have different input/output impedances meaning they react different with your guitar and the NUX has way more gain.

Yeah I've heard mixed results from people. Some people love it, some people hate it. I think it's just down to what tones you enjoy and what you expect from a pedal in this price range. I think the lower gain sounds in this are way better than the higher gain.

@@LeighFugeGuitar it has way to much gain for the amp that it claims to emulate. I would say the tones are more overdrive special than steel string singer. Also the pedal wasn't very reactive at all, and vertex actually has a video about this pedal and why there's is reactive and nux isnt

Hey Matthias, Thanks for checking out the video. I've played, and own plenty of great pedals. I regularly demo pedals for most of the brands so I get to try out a lot of things and the NUX pedal sounded great to me. Pedals don't always sound great for everyone, everyones tastes and uses are different. For my uses, this pedal works fine, but there are other pedals I also dislike. It's not for everybody, otherwise we'd all have the same gear 😀

Here’s the problem. It’s a fine pedal but it doesn’t do what’s advertised. It’s not a dumble pedal clone at all

It doesn’t sound close to the amp!! It is a cheap and poor tone pedal!!

To be fair, most of us have never, and will never experience a real Dumble. All the companies that produce Dumble style pedals are just giving us ways to get into that tonal ballpark on a budget. For the price of this pedal, it sounds pretty good. At what point is the tone poor? Yes the pedal is cheap, but anyone who is expecting a £50 pedal to sound exactly like a real Dumble is a bit of a dreamer. It’ll never sound like the real thing, nothing ever will... but it might get you a little bit closer.
