    How the heck did they manage to make a small piece of plastic have such a realistic sound? It totally sounds like a real saxophone to my untrained ears.

    Disappointingly, I found it to be unlike my straight soprano sax. It's got a slightly nasal character to it; something akin to a cor anglais. In its unmodified state, it's not particularly in tune.

    It’s the reed that makes it sound like that. I met someone who sold his own version of mini ‘sax’ sounding instruments, which were basically bamboo flutes with reeds on the mouthpiece, which gave them that ‘sax’ like tone.

    Hi Chez. Thanks for this. I'm a 64 year old drummer who, after two spinal operations, now has several physical issues which prevent me playing. I've been going slowly crazy without music, and needed another instrument to learn. It needed to be light, and something where I could see what my fingers were doing (I have no feeling i my fingers anymore so can't rely on touch like most people). I'd thought of soprano, but a after a few taster lessons, it was obviously going to be too heavy. After watching this video on the Jsax, I bought one recently and it's near perfect for me. Light, robust, blows easily, everything you said. Been very impressed with what I've seen of your channel. and particularly your honesty in reviews, and beginner tips. I'd still like to progress to a "normal" instrument (if anyone knows of a featherweight soprano, let me know), but this is a great start. (I've got the mouthpiece patches on order!) Thanks again.

    Definitely check out a sopranino saxophone. Its basically a saxophone in the form factor of a clarinet thats definitely considered a “normal” instrument. If mobility is a problem then its for you as it’s keys are very small and easy to reach. Id suggest watching sweet louisiana as just a small taste of how the instrument looks and sounds. Good luck on your recovery!

    it actually sounds like a sax, which makes it better than for example a yamaha venova (which sounds more like a kazoo), and if you search around on the internet costs about the same. One plus for the yamaha: it has 2 octaves (according to youtube reviews, I haven't played it). I'm gonna buy one of these, even if I don't like it, it will make a nice addition on my instrument wall.

    Wish it was same key as alto. Then it would be really easy to play songs I know. They should make a slightly better model with correct table keys. I'm thinking Casio electric, don't even need to blow. Practice fingering with headphones or audibly through a reed that triggers an electric note. Play synthesizer sounds, have metronome or drum backing. Loops, recording all for the price of a cheaper keyboard. Thanks for the info. Love your accent.

    Thanks for the review. I've wanted to learn playing sax just for fun. Currently I feel tired by having to go to some lonely place where I can express my inner music by whistling like crazy :D So, with jSax I might be able to express myself in my apartment any time I get some inspiration, and it's also not too loud, which is good (I imagine that my first attempts will sound bad and might be annoying for neighbors). At first I looked at a cheaper Chinese sax, Startone SAS-75 but it is still 3x more expensive than jSax and also loud. That might be my upgrade if I get serious with my intentions, but for now jSax might be just fine. One doubt is about the fingering. Does jSax differ from a real sax a lot? If I learn to play jSax well and then get invited to some party where there is a real sax available, will I be able to play it immediately or not?

  • @cheztaylorsax

    @cheztaylorsax

    I think the Jsaxx is great for getting started on embouchure (mouth shape) but yes, I'm afraid the fingers are quite different. The principles are similar so definitely worth buying one anyway Also good for trips away etc as it's compact & robust so you can just chuck it in your case. Hope you go for it and buy one! For full size beginner saxes, I quite like the elkhart. I'm going to do a comparison of cheap saxes video very soon so watch this space!

    hi, i always liked the sax but never had a chance to play it (or any instrument for that matter) and i read some amazon reviews and they all say that they sounds good only when a professional plays it (as he/she knows what they are doing) and that you have to blow really hard to get a sound (is this true?). it seems to me that it is good to try and see if i like it, but those reviews are a little discouraging.

  • @and7barton

    @and7barton

    5 жыл бұрын

    Whether it’s “easy” or not is purely a subjective opinion. The jSax fingering is almost identical to a recorder insofar as the left hand is concerned, except for a sax-like G# key. The Bb is forked like a recorder. It has a left hand thumbhole. So the left hand was pretty easy for me, being a sax player. The situation with the right is frankly a mess. The bottom C and C# is the same as many recorders, with a ring key. The D involves closing three keys, the forefinger and ring finger keys being ring keys, the middle finger key being solid. Playing Eb and F# involve closing those ring keys by pressing a small extension on the edge of them. It’s the latter that lets it down for rapid playing. I’ve drastically modified my jSax to make it more sax-like, by blocking the thumbhole, adding a top octave key, fitting a soprano sax mouthpiece and saxophone key pearls to all the covered pads. I’m currently trying to work out how to get rid of those terrible F and D ring-keys.

    @@nhathuy1004 The first thing I did was to throw away the mouthpiece and use a Selmer C* soprano sax mouthpiece ! - Then I purchase a spare Chinese soprano sax neck, remove the top octave yoke and top octave hole stub, unsoldered the saddle that the yoke pivots in, and threw away the neck. I dismantled the jSax neck, glued on a proper soprano sax mouthpiece cork, drilled a hole in it to fit the brass stub and glued it in. Glued on the saddle pivot so the pad covered the hole stub. I had to fabricate a lever from scrap plastic, reaching down to the thumb hole. I glued the thumbhole closed and covered it with a sax pearl. So now I had a standard top octave key. Regarding the main keys. I glued pearls over all the left-hand pads and a small pearl over the G# key. The main alterations were made to the right-hand keys. I glued a pearl over the 1st finger key. The next hole along, I glued closed. The middle finger key, I covered with a pearl. 3rd key, I glued on a pearl with the centre drilled out to provide a vent. The next key (which is attached to the previous key), I glued on a pearl (merely for decoration). The pinky key, I again covered with a drilled-out pearl. The lowest key, I covered with a pearl. So with the exception of the two drilled-out pearls, all the other pearls covered any previously-vented keywork. The jSax is now better in tune, has fingering virtually the same as a proper soprano sax, is louder due to the proper mouthpiece, and gives me one full lower octave, plus an upper octave consisting of C, C#, D, Eb, E, F, F#, G, and if I'm lucky G# and A. However, I couldn't improve the tone quality. It still sounds like like an anaemic soprano sax with some Cor Anglais/Oboe mixed in. I don't know why the makers didn't experiment just a little more and they'd have got it right. Possibly even reaching a full two octaves. My FB page shows in pictures, some of my mods.
