Nutcracker Sugar plum fairy - Iana Salenko

Sugar Plum Fairy Dance from Nutcracker.
Casse-Noisette
Coreography by Vasily Medvedev & Yuri Burlaka (2011)
Performed by Marian Walter, Iana Salenko
I like the aparent simplicity of this coreography, how beautiful can be this single dance.

    I love her dancing. She’s my favorite Sugar Plum Fairy. I love that she doesn’t spin endlessly at the end, but provides interesting and graceful movements that make her look like a doll come to life.

    Iana is one of the best ballerinas of our time. This performance is absolutely exquisite. I don't know about her training background, but it looks to me that she somehow has the best of both Russian and Western European schools of ballet's styles. I so very adore this. She has the generosity, the grand movements, the flexibility, the lines of a Russian ballerina (especially notice the positioning of her hips at 0:30), but somehow also the careful and delicate footwork of an etoile at Paris Opera House. Amazing.

    More specifically, it has many of the original 1892 sets and costumes, but there are a few differences from the actual original St. Petersburg production. E.g. the dancing dolls in Act I are different in this reconstruction from the Colombine, Harlequin, Vivandière, and the Soldier in the original version.

    @@DuchessRococoPuff Well, the video of the production is available on DVD and Blu-Ray (though which copy to get might depend on which region you're in; I'd recommend checking the video region code and video format to see if it's in NTSC or PAL, to see which region the copy might work on). It's also available on some streaming services like Vimeo, I believe (but it may cost a bit money to rent or purchase it).

    The choreography is, more or less, the original as created by Lev Ivanov for the premiere in 1892. The only obvious variation from it is the coda.

    I used to take ballet classes, and still like this form of dance. Some of my favorite ballet music is for the sugar plum fairy. I was trying to get it playing, and one reason is it is making me feel a bit better even though I got a very rude email from someone I do not even know (I mentioned on the internet that a historical figure had acted in a very immoral fashion part of their life, so someone recently DURING THE PANDEMIC messaged me that (paraphrased) this historical person was great their whole life and called me an insulting name.)This type of music has a very powerful affect on me to be able to help with a mood this bad.

    I love it, but I’m an outsider to this world. I’m not a ballerina. One of the main reasons I love it is because it’s so different from all the other Sugar Plum Fairy dances. I especially love her hip movements at the end, and that she doesn’t spin endlessly.

  • @dudalamy
    @dudalamy4 жыл бұрын

    The performance is out of this world, her movements are just so smooth and graceful but the costume is not what the sugar plum fairy should wear, the tutu needs to be a little harder and painted with either rose gold/gold/light pinks with stones that make the ballerina shine a little more

  • @lulumimi

    it is a more historically accurate costume, when the nutcracker originally premiered, ballerinas did not wear a flat, pancake-style tutu the way they do nowadays, and i'm not saying i think it's prettier, just providing some context lol

    The choreography does her talent and skill absolutely no justice. The ending is lackluster without the pique manege. It's hardly Iana's fault, but there's a reason why many prefer when she dances The Nutcracker with the Royal Ballet versus her own company.

    Dead right, we all like different dancers and variations for our own reasons. Choreographers change things slightly not always to ones likeing. But for gawd sake stop thinking you are bloody Ninette de valoise. Too much stress on technical terms and less on simple observations, not everyone is familiar with such terms and it dont always matter. If you appreciate ballet that much just frigin enjoy it unless of course it is really crap but that doesn't happen unless you're potty enough to attempt romeo and juliet on the table at an office bash🙄

    I would have said Ivanov until the tag at the end (which a lot of companies just eliminate). I actually liked it, although yes, used to grand manege with pique and emboite turns (maybe a few soutenus as well). I liked the way she handled the pivots from 2nd to 4th and back, like she was sharing a secret with the audience. I only stumbled upon her by accident wanted to see Ivan Vasiliev do (I think) Corsaire at one of the Dance Open perfs and immediately fell in love. My impression is that she's not well known outside parts of Europe and Russia, and that's a shame. She's not the same but she's easily the equal of some better known ballerinas like Nela Nunez (whom I worship and adore). Her dancing has great character, and if you've ever seen what I might call her signature move (fouette sequences of double, triple, single, rinse and repeat), you know she has absolutely sterling technique. Thx for posting. Do you have the grand adage or the coda (notice Marian Walter in the credits)?

    There's I don't understand: In the story of this version, the original version, they made Clara the Sugar Plum Fairy. But I read that in 1892 they were danced by two different ballerinas!

  • @EricMontreal22

    @EricMontreal22

    5 жыл бұрын

    They were. This version in many ways tried to be as much a recreation as the original (same sets and costumes, as much of the original choreography as possible) and yet they still made some big story changes... For example Clara becomes the Sugar Plum Fair (and the Nutcracker Prince becomes the oddly named Prince Cocaluche who were different characters in the original. Droselmeyer comes to the Kingdom of the Sweets in this version. Clara's mom wears the earlier Sugar Plum costume at the start of Act II...)

    Beautiful set and costumes but what happen to the choreography? It can not decide which part of the melody to sync with and throws the timing off in many parts. I would have to say Nina Kaptsova's Sugar Plum dance is much better but yet done in front of a weak set (background).

    Russian style includes NOT hitting every count on the count, but finessing between counts and playing with the timing. The music thus becomes, not the master of the dancer, but a conversational voice in the production: the dance becomes the main thing. This was one thing that made Balanchine and Stravinsky such good collaborators, they already both had this awareness in mind. Marching to the beat is for soldiers. Dancers can be more nuanced.
