Svetlana Zakharova/Светлана Захарова is a People's Artist of Russia, laureate of the Russian state prize, prima ballerina of the Bolshoi Theatre of Russia, and étoile of La Scala. She was born in Lutsk (Ukraine). At the age of 10 she entered the Kiev Choreography School. Having spend six years in the class of Valeria Sulegina, she took part in the international young dancers contest "Vaganova Prix" in Saint Petersburg, where she was the youngest ballet dancer. At the age of 15 Svetlana won the second prize.
After the contest she accepted the invitation to go to the famous Vaganova Ballet Academy in Saint Petersburg. She skipped the second class and went straight to the graduating class which was the only case in the whole history of this educational institution.
Zakharova immediately drew attention to herself and six months later when she took invitation to perform a solo part in the ballet "Don Quixote" in the Mariinsky Theatre. When she was seventeen, Svetlana Zakharova graduated from the Vaganova Academy and in nearly no time she was accepted into the legendary ballet company of the Mariinsky Theatre.
Svetlana was noticed by the outstanding teacher of the Mariinsky Theatre and a famous ballet dancer the People's artist of Russia Olga Moiseeva. Under her guidance, Zakharova debuted as Maria in "The Fountain of Bakhchisarai". Then she danced Gulnara in "Le Corsaire" and performed "The 7th Waltz and Mazurka" in "Chopiniana".
But the most tremendous success was brought to her by the role of Giselle in the ballet of the same name. Shortly after the premiere Zakharova received an offer from Vladimir Vasiliev to join the company of the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow.
Having received her official 'prima' status at the age of 18, Svetlana continued her work for the Mariinsky Theater expanding her repertoire with classical and modern pieces.
At the same time she started to receive international recognition. Her global fame rapidly grew. In 2001, she signed her first contract with L'Opera de Paris for "Bayadère". It was the first time in thirty years that a ballet dancer from Russia had a chance to perform on the French capital's famous stage.
Zakharova has toured to every part of the world: New York Metropolitan Opera, London Covent Garden, The Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires, Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich, Teatro di san Carlo in Napoli, Vienna Opera, National Theater in Tokyo, stages in many cities of Europe, Asia, Australia and South America. La Scala signed a long-term contract with her and awarded her with the status of étoile. This was the first time in the history of this great theater that such a distinction was made. Up until then, no Russian ballet dancer had been awarded this honor before. She also took part in DVD-recordings of "Swan Lake", "Bayadère" and "Giselle".
In 2003 Svetlana Zakharova decided to join the ballet company of the Bolshoi Theater. Famous ballet dancer People's Artist of Russia Ludmila Semeniaka has become her tutor. Zakharova's first work in the Bolshoi was the ballet-premiere "La Fille du Pharaon" by the famous choreographer Pierre Lacotte. A recording of this ballet was issued on DVD. Gradually Zakharova was introduced into every piece of the Bolshoi's classical repertoire.
She is still performing.

Svetlana was recruited even before she graduated from dance academy the Vasagnova into the Maranisky theatre in St. Petersberg where she started doing solos prior to being promoted to prema ballerina. Later she joined the Bolshoi theater where she remained. Years of hard work, dedication and striving for perfection , she is one of the greatest ballerinas of her generation. 😊
Growing up in NY, US, I was privileged to see may theatrical performances. I learned to appreciate fine arts & value cultural diversity. I enjoyed many shows but my most cherished memories where at the Russian Ballets. Even as a child the experience was divinely captivating & truly magical! Every detail was perfect & the dancers were magnificent! After 6 decades of admiration, I believe Russian's are the World's best! Their expression of beauty is beyond words!

With the best shape.
She has incredibly long limbs, which all have a capacity for a slight over extension. So she is physically very gifted indeed. But she’s also an extremely graceful and artistic dancer. So enchanting to watch.

Sigur când se întâlnesc talentul uimitor ...dublat de multa munca și de o școală ,de profesori ff buni...rezultatul este dincolo de cuvinte. Mulțumim că există astfel de artiști minunați!!

2:53 - I did not think a split greater than 180 degrees could exist, but here it is. Absolutely stunning. In mid air too! Imagine leaping high in the air, doing a full split, and landing gracefully on point. Over and over again. My god! It boggles the mind. What an incredible athlete she is!

She is the greatest ballerina in the world right now. Hands down. I kept praising Natalia Makarova as being the be-all, end-all of ballet. Natalia just seemed to be born with all the advantages. She just... had everything. I never thought there would be anyone better. But low and behold, then... Svetlana came around. Damn. She's a goddess. It would be a blessing from above if she took it upon herself to perform a piece here in America.
She is radiant, powerful, and exquisite. What an incredible athlete and artist. The leap at 7:10 took my breath away. "The ground beneath the feet of a dancer is sacred." ~ Martha Graham. Zakharova is that quote personified.

О, я видела один раз Светлану вживую. !!!! Это было в Петербурге, танцевали звезды Мариинского, Светлана приехала из Москвы. Что сказать? Светлана это другое измерение, это космос, это квантовая физика, это что-то абсолютно неземное. Это был современный номер , здесь он показан первым, это был поток какой-то необыкновенной силы, неземной красоты, какой-то эпический размах ее природы, даже трудно слова подбирать.. я была ошеломлена, как и все в зале…

Master of all. Taking in consideration all features in my opinion she has been the best ballerina in history, or at least the most complete. Brava!!!
There are those athletes and dancers who can simply take over a game or performance and show us why they are among the elite. Her dancing is breathtaking. What an honor it would be to present such a gifted passionate artist a huge beautiful bouquet!

Недавно читала коммент одной тусовщицы, видела, мол Захарову в Монако-лошадь. Задело? Не то слово. Но подумала-человек явно балета не видит, имеет глупость писать об этом... Оскорбить это...чудо..И еще критиков не терплю-неудачники- ты покажи нам СВОЕ дело, мы посмотрим. Кто ты есть, чтобы судить тех, кто делает? . На Захарову можно смотреть бесконечно.. это какой то другой уровень, даже по сравнению с моими любимыми советскими балеринами.

А мне кажется наш советский балет двинула вперёд художественная гимнастика современная- периода Ирины Винер .Смотрю на Захарову- растяжка гимнастическая,в советское время балерины утверждали,что у них угол поднятия ноги четко прописан и выше им поднимать нельзя,это уже не классический балет.Но смотрю,всё-таки ноги до ушей это красиво и перешпагат лучше,чем прыжки с висячей задней ногой.Мне нравится именно такой балет.

I'm so thankful that we have such good photography and video capture equipment this day and age.... imagine all the beautiful swans of the past that performed for people probably almost every day and only those who saw will get to see how graceful and beautiful they were and well idk how their bodies keep up but just watching them is killing my ankles. I must watch go watch Swan Lake again if it ever comes by in my lifetime... I was far too young to truly appreciate it all when my dad took me when I was younger.
Completely delightful and awe inspiring. My husband’s football (soccer) team had a tiny little ballerina come to take their training sessions in the 80s. She hardly broke sweat and all the big, fit and strong men were broken at the end of the session. Ballet dancers, male and female, are at the pinnacle of human achievement in their physicality. They are almost other worldly in their grace and unequalled in their dedication to their craft. ❤

LOVE your comment lol. Ballet dancers are indeed the "athletes of the gods" to quote Einstein. Not only are they fit beyond belief and capable of the most incredible feats of strength, they have to look good doing it lol. Thanks for watching, and thanks for taking the time to share your story. I'm glad to know I have a fellow "weeper" when it comes to exquisite ballet... I quite often edit my videos through tears of joy and disbelief in just how beautiful a human being can be.
