Please don't call pointe shoes an accessory. They are one of the most important elements of being a classical ballet dancer. A tiara is an accessory - you don't really need it except as part of a costume. But pointe shoes are absolutely vital.

Not mentioned: toe pads and spacers. And layers of callouses on the feet so it doesn't hurt* *Edit: whew okay comments...it’s been 2 years since I wrote this. My comment was in general, these things will help. YES of course it’s going to hurt after a while! If you dance in pointe shoes for 8+ hours you’re gonna have sore feet! And spacers can’t be worn by everyone, and some studios don’t allow toe pads. If you’re dancing for a few hours en pointe and your feet are killing you something is really wrong. By the time you get to pointe you should have muscles and technique built up enough were you won’t injure yourself and can support your weight. This video was :/ mainly cause the dancer was like yes pointe shoes hurt all the time every second of wear, even tho many dancers wear some kind of padding inside. Being in /serious/ pain (I’m taking like wincing pain) while en pointe is a sign something else is wrong with your foot. :>

Not all dancers need elastics, it depends on the strength of you ankles. If your ankles aren’t strong you’re at risk or injuring them so you’re given elastics. If your ankles are strong you aren’t a always given elastics. Most professional dancers only need them because of how long they’ll be dancing as their ankles can get tired so the elastics help support them

This made me feel so guilty: at my studio we have to practically destroy the shoes before going on stage. All of the care gone into making the shoe look beautiful disappears after a performance; I nearly cried when they made us pancake them this year, they went from a beautiful satin to a cheap looking dull pink :((

Images of bloodied feet aren’t common at all. Toes can bleed, yes, without proper care, but the most common issues with feet were mentioned in the video: blisters, swelling, soreness, redness, tightness.

Queen Sairai even with these things after hours upon hours en pointe a day it does hurt no matter what. They aren’t being shallow by not staying this in this particular video. At my ballet school you aren’t allowed to wear things such as padding in your shoes. Many professionals chose to do this as well.

I was only allowed to wear a bit of lambswool in my pointe shoes. Most respected schools/teachers will not let you "pad" your feet. You can't feel the floor, and you need to toughen up your feet.

I wear an ouch pouch as padding and an extra layer around my big toe because that's where most weight is on. On top of that, I put a layer of thick fabric/padding in the front of my pointe shoe and on the bottom so that I fill up the shoe better. After all of that, it still hurts a lot. You can't keep pointe shoes from hurting, that's part of the process.

I have my pointes and trust me they are very hard to use. It takes years to prepare your muscles and bones to get these shoes. We have to replace shoes so often because we sweat and “ruin” the shoes when preforming because the shoes get dirty and are hard to wash. Ann’s you haft to have pads in your pointe shoes. Pads are these small fabric like socks that cover your toes that protect your feet from any damage caused by the pointes. Pointes are hard to work with take it from a dancer who uses them on a daily basis

It's not depending on the shoes getting dirty, just getting too soft to support a dancer. Most of the 'preparing' is just waiting since the only thing stopping younger dancers from going on pointe is underdeveloped bone structure in the ankle and foot. Also, pads are usually plain rubbery gel or ouch pouches, which have thinner gel with a fabric cover. But yeah, some studios doesn't allow toe pads, maybe just lambs wool and tape.

edit: guys if any of you aren't trained don't.get.pointes. you can hurt yourself easily by just standing in them, you can slip/twist your ankle/ etc. if you're buying them to decorate then it's fine, just don't get them for pics, or for "playing around" a lot of us here have been dancing for years and still haven't gotten them, because we're still training. You need at leat 6 years or more. if YOU are a dancer of a few months or a year and want to get pointes, don't. Your teacher needs to confirm it and you need to make sure you have enough ankle strength etc. anyways, "theres steps seem almost effortless" *stfu* "accessory:pointe shoes" *_STOP RIGHT NOW_*

That's definitely true but part of it can come from genes. My mother was a ballerina and my father was a footballer. They had naturally strong feet and legs. I got into ballet after being examined by my doctor. He said I had very strong ankles for a girl at this age. So I started going on pointe and really it's not that bad except the bunions and callusses. Other than that, I was really grateful to be already on pointe after only a year of training!

It's so funny and cute when non dancers ask us why we go through so many shoes.....I literally had someone say to me "if they cost that much how come they don't last for a few months" and I'm like welp it just don't work like that.......also I showed this video to my friend because she wears Freeds and her maker is the crown 👑 so she got to see who her maker was.

I'm not a dancer or a performance artist, but I am a visual artist. Studying ballerinas as they dance was one of my favorite things to do. And the question (and I paraphrase) "Why can't you just stick with a good pair?" is a REALLY silly question. They're made of material that chafes easily and gives only just enough resistance to the wood or rock floors they are used on. Toe protection is vital to a safe performance. One broken toe can take you out for a season and then you've too much to catch up on and you're behind everyone else.

I’ve taken ballet for 12 years and the point shoes first hurt in the beginning but now they are completely painless and I have about 13 pairs in my closet right now and I use them all in about 1 or 1 and a half months about because I take classes every Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday. I love ballet and I do it because my mother was a ballerina dancer so I have had it most if my life. ❤️❤️

Truly I’m a traditional ballerina.. And pointe shoes, are NOT accessories. Pointe shoes are part of the outfit, a tiara, or bow for example, is an accessory. Pointe shoes are basically an outfit/clothing design that is like an every day outfit. I practice in ballet flats and pointe shoes, they are basically how you wear tennis shoes somewhere, you can’t dance in bare feet. It’s just not a traditional ballet way.

As a life long dancer myself this is the most iconic and my most favorite show to watch. Can't ever get old for me, it is my every year thing to see with my husband who is sweet enough to suffer through this year after year just to see me smile and happy. After 25 years of marriage and 28 together you'd think he could do this entire show himself. How is it going?

I have nothing but mad respect and admiration for dancers. I hope to be one myself one day

I want to go on pointe so bad but I’ve been dancing only jazz, lyrical, etc. since I was five and now I’m thirteen and I only do an hour long ballet class a week...

I love these kinds of videos!! It’s so interesting

Pusheen Cat already responded to one of your comments, but just wanted to add- Kukome sells $20 pointe shoes. I haven’t bought them myself but they look nice and other people like them. And they come with padding!

When she's tries it on why does she not get given an ouch pouch or silicone cover?? That's probably why it hurts so much 😂😂

These beautiful works of art are not accessories but an art of dance most people don’t understand the difference between normal ballet and pointe pointe is more complex at less advanced studios you don’t go through as many pairs of pointe I am part of the nutcracker every year in my state and the girls on pointe only use one pair of pointe shoes there is one thing to put under the shoe to keep infections and pain from happening and that is toe pads and toe spacers just wanted to share this info

I LOVE dancing on pointe shoes!

I tried my sister's points once when she was at performing arts school... They hurt sooo bad. Pure respect to ballerinas and their strong toes

I wanted a pair of real ballet shoes when I was 13 so my mother finally got them for me for Christmas. (I was not a dancer). I tried them few times then “bye-bye”. 🤗🤗

Oh yes - just like real ballerinas. Don’t see how they do it. It really does ruin their feet & suffer from bunyons & other conditions.

Pusheen Cat if you want a pair I recommend buying from a cheap company- they’re not dancing quality but they look the same and they’re still fun to wear

Pointe shoes are always so magical. Even though they give me swollen feet, bruised toenails, and blisters EVERYWHERE I still love them 💓

No you don’t. I’m a ballet dancer and although we have tights, toe pads and callouses to protect our feet, you have to LOVE the art to endure the pain. It’s not pleasant if you aren’t used to it

its actully funny my friends do cheer and there always like how? and im a dancer and the funniest part is i can do everything they do so ....

Its so important that the makers enjoy their job and they actually enjoy them!!!

Pointe hurts so much and I keep getting blisters but all the performances make it all worth it at the end

When she tried on the pointe shoe I died inside

I want to do ballet but i think im to old to do that im 13 and most ballerinas would have thier point shoes by now.

Blue Wave Nooo, don't say that! I'm 16, and I'm starting ballet sometime in the next couple weeks. And I live in Russia, where 16 is considered graduating age of "ballet highschool". All you have to have is a strong enough desire, and you can do it! I'm rooting for you! P.S. You can look up videos about dancers starting late, there are some pretty encouraging ones :) Especially the one called "Late Start, Going Pro: Meet Alexandria"

It's never too late ! I heard once a finalist of Prix de Lausanne has started dancing at 15, if I remember correctly. If you want it to be a hobby you can even start as an adult, dancing is about the soul, the love, the feelings, etc , not the age. But if you want to be a professional dancer, you will have to work hard and to find the right people to support you. It's up to you to make your life what you want it to be ! I am with you :)

Ballet is a very beautiful art in itself I had a boss who was a ballerina who was with a ballet school I have watched ballet with the ballerinas as they dance with grace

I do dance and the backstage part of the whole thing is magical.

A hate how non dancers say I’m getting a pair of pointe shoe just to play with and take photos like that is so dangerous plus actual dancers work so hard and they train so much to have the privilege of going en pointe when there’s stupid people out there risking getting an injury just to wear shoes that they don’t even have the right to own.

Ik its highly dangerous if they don't have the right training to strengthen their ankles, it can take years before dancers are ready for pointe

sophie is not saying people shouldn't dance, she's saying people should go en pointe without training, because it's incredibly dangerous to do that ballet can be done on demi-pointe (tip-toes, where the toe is bent), most male dancers only dance on demi-pointe, and that is perfectly safe to do without professional classes
