Nice vid. But was thinking it would have been nice if the nurse had all her supplies in a tray instead of dipping her gloved hands (which she equally used in touching the patient) intermittently into her pockets and back on the patient.

never explained hyperglycemia to him when he asked. patient education could have better when it came to side effects to look out for.

I don't know if this will help anyone but I was diagnosed at 24 and the main thing that confused me was calculating my insulin to carb ratio. I understood the premise but I didn't understand that it would take trial and error on my part to figure out what MY ratio was. Also, her comment about 70-110 being a good reading is crazy to me. I was told to aim for 70-140 when I was first diagnosed but currently I aim for 100-180. I start to feel the beginning of hypoglycemia around 80 so I try not to let myself get close that that.

I am also a nurse and have a grandson with type 1. The nurse should know that a person without diabetes will have a normal range from 80 to 120. A person with type 1, even with following a diabetic diet, gets exercise, covers his carbs with insulin, etc. will almost never have a blood sugar in that range.

Mary Jo Bankard that's not true. With great management T1D are more than capable to keep their sugars in range.

These statements are incorrect. A type 1 diabetic makes NO insulin and requires insulin for life. Type 2 diabetics have insulin but not enough for body needs or it’s become resistant. Normal blood sugar values are 70-110mg/dL. I am a nursing instructor and a nurse. I have been a practicing nurse for 20 years. It’s important to get the facts. I have treated over 100 type 1 diabetics for diabetic ketoacidosis, over the last 10 years alone. Pediatrics to adults. Blood sugar values that won’t measure on an accucheck and require lab draws. Average blood sugar levels for these patients have been 600-900mg/dL

well, if a T1D is in the hospital they get pumped full of glucose by IV because the hospital afraid of death by hypoglycemia. A T1D in the wild can easily achieve in-range values if they're doing diet/exercise/insulin as prescribed. I'm T1D and my average is 95mg/dL , but if I have a hospital stay my BGL never dips below 200 until I leave.
