"Should one reconstruct? I have to answer the question in the affirmative without reservation. Perhaps the number of people in Germany and outside of it is not yet that large who are able to foresee what a vital loss, what a sad source of illness, the destruction of historical sites will turn out to be Not only is a lot of high values of tradition, of beauty, of objects of love and piety destroyed: the soul world of these descendants is also deprived of a substance without which people can live if necessary, but only a hundredfold, can lead a stunted life." HERMANN HESSE

Yet this recent German trend in (re)creating lost historical architectural landmarks - like the Potsdamer Garnisonkirche, or the Berlin Palace (Berliner Schloss), for example - have the potential to awaken wider disquiet if continued too indiscriminately. They are necessarily linked to a German imperial (some might say predatory) history that recalls many things best left forgotten, and excites nostalgia maybe for territories lost post-war to Germany's Eastern neighbours. Some ghosts are best left unsummoned...

I visited Nürnberg some years ago. Lovely place…It was explained what was lost architecturally, that aspect breaks my heart. As an English speaker from the other side of the world, I had a great experience there where I asked a guy in German what a lovely little place was that I saw. He explained that because my German was so good, I could go in. Turned out it was a sausage house that mainly only locals frequented. I had a great night in there along with an Australian colleague who couldn’t speak German. The beer flowed, great food and conversation with the locals. One of my best memories. Nürnberg.

A powerful city at the nexus of lucrative trade routes, able to display its wealth and magnificence through splendid and massive city building works - defensive structures too that allowed the city to maintain its independence from Rome, a Catholic Emperor and Bavaria alike post-Reformation. Mostly now gone to cinders! A matching section of the video on what was left untouched or was easily repaired would have been of great value.

I´m sorry to say it in a direct way. There are still lots of people all over the world who are pleased that such a nice city disappeared because of a bad attitude to certain aspects of that war. They don`t distinguish between a political system and our world heritage. That`s a pity in my opinion. Greetings to all who recognize and appreciate our heritage anywhere it is in our world. We have only one world!

Let’s not forget that the lament of thousands of lost inanimate architectural splendours pales in comparison to the abject horror’s and loss of millions of sentient beings whose innocent lives were cut short by ill informed bigots radicalised by a nation swept up in Nationalism. How many brilliant minds whose contributions to the world missed out making this planet a better place? We will never know. While architecture can be rebuilt those who perished cannot. While society’s continue to re-build and put their past behind them the scars from violence experienced through war reverberate through generations on both sides. Rippling through so many time lines affecting generations to come.
