It’s still my favorite concert event of my life and I wasn’t even there. Extreme fans know how genuine Nuno is being here- listen to the Extreme B side “Sex and Love”- it’s directly inspired by Hammer To Fall. Extreme’s harmonies lend themselves very well to easily seeing Queen’s influence. And yes, Brian is universally known as being a nice guy in an often not-nice business. Hearing that John Deacon thanked him and saw the parallel- just about brought tears to my eyes. The fans looked like they were having a true celebration of Freddie and Queen. He’s right- by Radio Ga-Ga, that was a celebration in the truest form.

I was really glad to hear that John had said that - I'd been _kinda_ thinking to myself that there were some pretty strong parallels between the two performances, but wondering how to express that without pissing people off. It wasn't *_the same._* Of course not - it couldn't be. That kind of moment can only ever happen once. Anything that comes after will always be compared to that first time, but I'd describe Extreme's set as a really powerful echo of the Live Aid! show. A new performance that resonates with that first one. A pretty incredible day.

As soon as Extreme hit the stage with Mustapha and then exploded with Bohemian Rhapsody and then followed by Keep Yourself Alive, i knew exactly what Brian meant as it reminded me of Queen’s own Live Aid 20 minute slot where they played all the hits. Nice to know what myself and others have said for years was first said by Deaky: what Extreme did for the FM tribute concert was like what Queen did for Live Aid.

You know part of why that medley worked so well is that it was true to what Queen did back in the day. No extra musicians added to fill out the sound. Just 4 guys and 3 strong vocals and amazing songs. You can’t understate how special it is when you get people whose voices blend that well. Pat is the secret weapon in those 3 parts harmonies in my opinion. They nailed it that day and it was my, and many other people’s, favorite performance of the event.

I met Gary in a bar in Boston maybe a week after that. I tapped him on the shoulder, and he didn't react as I realized he was already speaking with his friend. I started to walk away and he called me back and said hi. I said I just wanted to tell him not only do I love Extreme, but that Freddy tribute performance brought tears to my eyes and made me so happy, also being a huge, huge fan of Queen. He said he isn't even over it yet, and it was maybe the best day of his entire life.

I was at the concert and watched it again recently on TV. The love and excitement at Extremes set, from within the crowd, was electrifying. Nuno's story about John Deacon though - John introduced the concert alongside Brian and Roger, I don't understand why he added the bit about being in the car.

You're right, he did... But no one knows what was going on. John might have gone off somewhere for an hour and returned. I'm certain Nuno's respect for the band means he wouldn't make stuff up...

Hey, Kylie. I've watched the medley over and over and over since it first aired, and it never ceases to absolutely floor me. The musicianship to pull that off on that day on that stage, for that audience (live and via broadcast / out front and in the wings) and their pure love of the songs was / is utterly awesome. I remember watching it live and being unable to believe what I was seeing. And, to be honest, shocked at how much emotion it unlocked in me too, as a fan of both bands. Their joyful celebration of Freddie's life's work brought home to me what the world had lost. Thanks so much for posting this interview. Can't wait to check out Part II.

@@KylieOlsson Wow, thanks for the reply! Couldn't agree more. Great interview, BTW! Your questions are insightful (obviously), but the space you leave for answers to flow and grow is A) not common, and B) much appreciated. I have a slight problem with interviewers who use a guest's responses as springboards to talk about who they are and what they've done. It's not wrong, but your style really opens the floodgates. (Maybe that's just Nuno; the dude can talk!) I've now liked / subscribed and will enjoy working my way through the rest of your library. Pretty cool job you have!

I was there that day in the crowd in the front third, and when Extreme came on with their set it had a totally different energy and character to anything else that day. What they did was perfect in every way, a genuine heartfelt glorious tribute. Probably the closest to this was George Michael for the same reasons. The lowest point of the day was Axl Rose for me, and it was heartbreaking to see and hear what he did to such a beautiful song.
