The kicker that most people today won't quite get is: This is NOT a music video. This is a RECORDING of a PROGRAM you could run on your PC just like Word or Notepad. With a kick-ass soundtrack though.

I grew up with an Atari ST and spent more time watching demos / cracktros, than actually playing games. I still use techniques from back then in my music. I might be the exception, but for me it's a perfect music video.

Perhaps a stupid question, but considering 'classic'/old demo scene, where the key was to push technological abilities to the edge, I can understand this isn't much the case anymore these days, with super powerful hardware and a variety of systems. So, while I think this is absolutely amazing, how much is this a pre-calced run of effects made in Notch (which as I understand is software to create VJ / large TV presentations), and how much of it is a display of coding skills? It "feels" more like a display of creativity, vs a display of coding skills, but I could be way off the mark here. If anyone could share some background or knows of a site where demos like this are explained, I'd be much obliged.

@@animaze86 flashy things gets votes, it's not like these demo competition are code reviews so i think it's understandable. that said, it's ofcourse a bit sad that coding will be taken out of the equation in some of these file size unrestricted categories.

no but seriously, isnt there a billionaire out there who loves demos? if you were a billionaire and you loved demos, wouldnt you, idk, spend some resources to getting the word out? 52k views, its bullshit cause we know there are a million people out there who would thumbs up this video. I feel like there is a disconnect between the high level of art here and the people out there who would appreciate it but dont know about it.

We've reached a plateau where design is more the focus. With the commercialism capitalizing, I had hoped it was just a in-house / custom tooll.io ( wink*wink ;) but this makes me like Orange Dying Stars even more. While removing technical obstacles from more visual focused designs, this is clear example of how it does make for nice eye candy. But, the scene started out as more technical focused, whats next?

I'm pretty saddened to learn this was made in Notch too. Back in the day kids spent months learning how to build these effects in C(++), Pascal etc or building their own workflow tools from scratch. Now it is just a matter of dragging in some boxes into a node based gui and tweaking/automating levels. It's a well done demo though.
