Number of people living in RVs in Vernon grows

Complaints are piling up in Vernon about the number of RVs parked on city streets. Housing advocates say it's just another sign of the growing affordability and housing crisis in the North Okanagan.

I have been living in a RV now for 5 years, the rent is way too high and disability just isn't enough. I have been living at RV parks on and off. And even the RV parks are too much. What Canada needs to do is follow Finland, put housing for its citizen's FIRST! People need a home FIRST before they can deal with other issues like addiction, mental health and a job. Can get a job if you have no place to call home. I have been turned down numerous times for a job because I didn't have an address to show potential employers that I would be a stable employee. Do you know an employer who would hire a homeless person? If so send then send them my way, I want to work!

  • @bipedalbob

@The Real Jeffery Of Sky it's not quite that simple, presently there is a shortage of the trades people you'd need to embark on a massive project like that. And it will get worse as there are less and less younger people going into them. So as the many in the trades now age out there won't be enough to replace them let alone increase the numbers. Then there's the cost, who's gonna pay for it. We certainly need more affordable housing but it's not an easy fix. For starters places the RV dwellers could go with out being harassed and out of sight of the more fortunate and less compassionate. These would have to be government owned and subsidizes to keep them affordable for those that need them. There would be problems I'm sure but it's a start. Government subsidized housing on a massive scale would be next. They did it along time ago in what was the USSR , that's why there are so many huge apartment complexs in Russia now. But the shortage of trades people would need to be solved to do that.

Where are they getting money for gas to move every 48hrs? Rent in BC has been $1200.00 plus since 1997, this is not new. Hell at one point in 2005 I was paying 1700.00. Why are people bitching rent on average has gone up $300.00 in two decades… In 2002, I was making $8.03 at Tim Hortons and $8.25 at a dry cleaners supporting 3 children, attending university and paying $1200.00 for a 2 bedroom house… Then that place was sold so I moved onto a $1700.00 with the same income. I had to get creative, like no internet, no cable. We used the food bank/volunteered there as well. 2nd hand pay as you go Virgin cell phone. Now minimum wage is $10.00 and people are paying $2000.00 I’m not getting what the problem is here. People have lost perspective on this issue. Homelessness/van life in this case is not about housing costs, it is about mental health, drugs, alcohol, laziness and or a desire to live on the fringes of society.

@@mwong8223 you have several flaws in your argument: 1. you cannot blame immigrants for the problems of homelessness. Your association between homelessness (poverty, housing affordability, gap of ability & skills, opportunity etc.) and immigrants "stealing jobs" from these homeless people is flawed because some homeless people simply cannot work because of mental or physical issues or even just ability. Are they to be blamed? No. But to make the association that immigrants are stealing potential employment from these homeless people is flawed because you are also making the assumption that the government ONLY allows low skilled workers into the country which is further from the truth. The immigration laws and policies are very stringent and the government of Canada scrutinizes carefully the applicants and they do not willy-nilly let anyone into the country. 2. we are all immigrants. You are an immigrant. I am an immigrant. We are all immigrants. The vast majority of Canadians are immigrants. Maybe you were born here. Maybe your parents were born here as well. I bet you, however, if you trace back far enough, you will find someone in your family immigrated to Canada. To blame the homelessness on immigration is to deny your very Canadian citizenship. 3. immigrants are hard working people, and they contribute significantly to Canada's economy. Experts have already cited that the birth rate in Canada is falling due to several factors (entitlement of lifestyle, inflation, better educated people, etc. blah blah blah), plus aging population, etc. Let me ask you this. Have you gone to a restaurant recently and seen a sign "we are short staff so please realize that service may be slow." I have. The sad part and the reality is that many Canadians don't even want to work, even at $15 / hour. Many experts have said that Canada should actually open up the immigration quotas and not restrict immigrants. Lastly, Canada is a nation of compassion. We are a caring country. We care about our citizens, and yes, even the homeless, even the addicts, even the disabled. We care.

@@robertlee3778 yes i see that you have completed the liberal arts degree program, which i have as well, basically ageism is a problem, we did not account for so many elders to live in poverty, suck in particulates from the air, because they live on the magor arteries in the cities, it is not thier falt that they cannot afford to work or are incapable, we cannot provide for people who live here, yet can give 2 billion to mumbia, i say that the math is wrong, you want to generalize, you need at least three examples for every idilic fact you spout off Anyways, what would you say to the elderly who live around chinatown, who have to put up with all this? That they are too old now to work? that we cannot afford to set up a home for them out into the country where there is less chance of heart attack, stoke and cancer?

@@mwong8223 "yes i see that you have completed the liberal arts degree program" wrong yet again. In fact, quite the opposite. I have a Bachelor of Science. You seem to like to put labels on things, to compartmentalize and to categorize. If that is your thing, so be it. Attacking the author is a natural defense when your own argument falls apart. No worries. I have seen this tactic used before and it falls apart quickly, as I have shown above. " we did not account for so many elders to live in poverty, suck in particulates from the air" all I can say to this is thank goodness that you are not the supreme commander of the universe because we would all suffer at your hands and judgement. Your lack of empathy and lack of compassion is ... astounding, and is only paralleled by your unfounded judgements. Your middle name wouldn't happen to be Ebenezer would it? but I digress. all i can say is this world contains all types. and yes, even people such as you. and yes, you have taught me a valuable lesson, which I have to be re-taught almost on a daily basis ... i can't help those who do not want to be helped. call me a forever optimist. perhaps even a fool to have such hope in humanity. and perhaps that is my fault, which is to have compassion and empathy ... and hope, things which are completely foreign to you, i know. Nevertheless ... continue your own way. i know you will. unflinchingly. unrepentantly. because that is who you are. 😊

If Trudeau didn't want people to call him out for sexual misconduct then he shouldn't have GROPED the reporter sexually without consent. Don't like his being called a Racist then your issue stems from his wearing Blackface. Upset at him being labelled corrupt, then you go talk with him. You can put any fake address you want no one with background check your living situation. Go grab a haircut and a shower at a local gym. Spit polish your shoes and hand in a resume to McDonalds. Then move somewhere more affordable. I'm so tired of this lazy victim mentality. like either of these people couldn't work at Wendy's ?!?!?
