It didn’t matter this match, but in the future remember that when a Birdman special summoned through its own effect leaves the field, it is banished. That’s part of why Leviair was played in this deck.

MBT's obelisk deck was just absolute trash ngl. It could perform a lot better if it wasn't jammed full of unnecessary dead cards like Sea Lancer, the monarch, jinzo and the draw frog which is completely useless in an Obelisk deck. Another important application of Obelisk in competitive play occurred during Dragon Ruler/Spellbook nationals. Tributing off the Dracossack and its tokens for Obelisk was a great play, as in the mirror match, the only maindecked monster hate was Blaster, which couldn't target Obelisk for destruction.
@lounowell4171
2 жыл бұрын
i ran a Watt deck that format with the single goal of turboing out the Hopperlock for the same reason D. Rulers relied so much on targeted destruction, pretty funny watching them slowly deck out with a field full of boss monsters against two 0 ATK monsters in attack position
In both games, you missed a synchro. You went straight for scrap/stardust when you are supposed to go karakuri 8 SS second dog from deck then scrap/stardust it's an extra 2800 damage plus a draw. It didn't matter but it is how the combo was performed.

Notable things for the frog deck, Rykos get sided in for this matchup to beat the armors, your other plays are bringing in more of your Monarchs over Obolisk. You need to remove armor before it flips. The bad showing is mostly in part to bad hands that didn't include one of the 12 or so ways to get armor off field. Soul Exchange, Monarch, Ryko, Creature Swap, ect. Many of this decks other match-ups can be distilled down to putting out two Gachi Gachis or dupe locking to get time to put out Obolisk and then using My Body As A Shield to stop one of their very few non targeting destruction outs to it.
16:24 Alex sends Joseph to the Shadow Realm
Deck that is 1/2 grind 1/2 combo and works VS. Jank
MBT's decklist looks like something that we'd see in History of Jank. I'm surprised the deck actually has legs.
Krakuri is such a neat deck. I love it when archetypes integrate their theme into their play-style, and playing Karakuris really invokes the idea of cogs turning with their gimmick of changing battle-positions all the time.
MBT running head-first into that tunnel thinking he won't crash like the balding man in front of him.

Easily my favorite episode yet. My two favorite decks (monarchs and karakuri) in the same episode is extremely hype
I die a little every time Cimo says "geargia arsenal". The fun names are the deck's best feature!
What a tragedy. Looks like the beginning of "Special Summoning half my deck super consistently" part of Yugioh's history.
Glad Cimo is enjoying Karakuris. I loved that deck.
I remember Mkohl40 made an Obelisk frog decklist back in the middle ages of 2010.
Cimo's geargia deck composition reminds me of the way yugioh played in this era prior to Spellbook/Dragon Ruler and even prior to full force Mermail. I remember playing pot of duality in a number of decks in this time where turn 1 was often just about defense and making sure i had good backrow and protection going into the next turn. There were a number of cards that allowed for drawing and then moving on with a defensive board like cardcar d and pot of duality. I remember Dino Rabbit builds with Cardcar D and Pot of Duality from just before this format where first turn Tour Guide into Zenmaines and the titular Rabbit into Laggia were really good first turn plays but consistency was often more important and decks weren't able to put on enough pressure immediately enough to keep you from using cards that sacrificed tempo for card economy. I think that interplay between tempo and card economy was really cool and overall made this era a very interesting time to play Yu-Gi-Oh! and it was also cool to see the creativity in decks that existed in this era where so many decks contained synergy among cards you wouldn't imagine at all. Zexal was a perfect balance of archetype decks and goodstuff decks from the start to the finish between an era of Chaos Dragons and Dino Rabbit vs Wind-ups going later into Mermail and Fire Fist, then into Spellbook and Dragon ruler where it felt like it was really hitting the peak of archetype decks, going then into dragunity Dragon Ruler into soon enough one of the most wild formats ever, HAT Format, one of the weirdest formats ever. I don't remember which point we had Sylvan, but yeah. Zexal was an incredibly interesting format and it's cool to see how it has many of the attributes of older yugioh and plenty of cards from that era carrying in with the middle showing a new direction for yugioh and the end being the calm before Duelist Alliance and my favorite yugioh format. Needless to say i really appreciate the history of yugioh series that helps me connect back into the days where the world of yugioh was turned upside down for me as i started competitive play as a young 13 year old. Edit: Funnily enough tho, this episode shows how some of the theory for deck building didn't always consider the potential for decks to push high damage and major pressure out the gate.
The best part about this video is that you didn’t even play Geargia optimally, also the fact that it gets so much more versatile. I used to play Geargia back in the day, I’ve been waiting for them to be covered (I know I’m late lol) but this is awesome!

Here are today’s illegal actions/clarifications: 20:57 Cannot activate the same Geargiarmor effect of flipping itself down more than once on the same turn. Despite it being worded as a soft once per turn, this was a special ruling that Konami made way back in the beginning of the PACMAN cards (Des Lacooda, Stealth Bird, etc.). Not many people know about this because there’s nothing printed on the card that says you can’t do this. You just have to know the specific ruling. 27:03 Creature Swap prevents the swapped monsters from manually changing battle position for the rest of the turn. Cannot flip summon the Geargiarmor here. 30:45 To clarify, Shock Master prevents any type of card (monster, spell, and trap) from activating until the end of the opponent’s next turn. If I’m understanding correctly what Cimo said, he said this applies to specifically only monsters, which is incorrect. To be fair, its wording is oddly written and I can see why it would make someone think that.

I think this is the first time I've seen a deck that truly cements my joy at quitting YGO, beyond looking through my cards wistfully or rebuilding my deck from what I have to be a *little* tighter on rare occasion. (Tighter for games that will never come but I like the mental activity.) Since tuners I've been thinking 'ugh' on occasion, but just a few episodes ago were there was a GOAT format deck that I was impressed by that made me think maybe I should have started going to play at my old game shop when the rest of my friends hung up their cards, but *holy crap* this geargia deck makes me glad I didn't.
I honestly hope we see the Obelisk deck again in History Of Jank, seems super fun, but MAN what the fuck is that Geargia deck
Let's go, that's Willie's frog deck! He was the first to top with it and we hung out all the time!
I played a very similar geargia karakuri list except I definitely played 1 strategist for some crazy extensions to your combos and extra draws through bureido. The deck was so busted. I terrorized locals, regionals, and made day 2 of a YCS with it.
Joseph got about as badly smashed here as he did in the Gravekeepers episode.
I’ve heard the horror stories of number 16. I’m glad I played in the time that where he’s been banned for 10 years.
That intro was just perfect.
I wish MBT played a deck that puts up more of a fight, an one sided slaughter is kind of meh
Shock was nutty. Trap stun+imp order+vfd in one card.
This is my favorite deck of all time. The explosiveness, the control, the grind, the otks. It had it all. Even if you can't kill your opponent when you pop off, what the heck is your opponent supposed to do vs 2 burei and a stardust plus very real backrow threats too? Edit: Cimooo both games left armor on the board, but what he could have done was sync into bureido before going scrap and stardust. extra body, and can draw cards. Also, game 2, Im pretty sure he set armor twice in the same turn
Oh this brings back nice memories. I absolutely adore Geargia Karakuri!
Geargea armor is a pacman card, u can only use the flip down eff once per turn. U missed this but I don't blame you.
It wasn't at a premier event, but Jesse Kotton played Obelisk in I think TOSS format in a Chaos Thunder Dragon deck.
I can't wait to get the reminder why that bird was a very crazy combo card even though I used it and I know exactly what happened lol but still QUALITY CONTENT
I've seen bits and pieces of it in the past on this series, but this is the episode where Yu-Gi-Oh really appeared to change irrevocably into a game of playing solitaire by ways of using endless combos on your turn and disallowing your opponent to play the game. I now have my answer to the question: "When did Yu-Gi-Oh die?". The answer is 2012.
seeing MBT's deck for this week I had to do a double take and make sure this was not a history of Jank episode... then I remembered; that's right Obelisk was a thing for a bit wasn't he? But frog/monarch/obelisk????????? that's a new one for me, it "Toadally" flipped my mind.
Cimo beat Joseph so hard the first time he shut off his camera
Mbt: We are literally never going to use the extra deck. One little misty boy:
The geargia/Karakuri deck got even better with the trap "Geargiagear", allowing even facilitated access to Shock Master. It can look broken, but it was one of the only way to overcome dragon rulers and spellbooks which appeared in the next format (march 2013). I got well with the deck at that time, but it wasn't largely played and ever less after Shockmaster was banned.
The card you go in to is strategist. Geargia-karakuri player from when This was meta. Super fun deck! Playing this in master duel now. Also you can’t flip geargiarmor twice in the same turn (game 2)

... No, I should not say it... GAH! ...Oh hey, it's solitaire- DANG IT!
Somehow this wasn't a very SHOCKING episode
1:41 Oh Cimo got it wrong this is footage from History of JANK I believe.
Look I agree that Shock master was introduced for me to have a reason to quit going to locals and retreat to playing only with friends... or as you hinted killed the fun in yugioh.
Seeing the kalut on the tcg player page is just ridiculously funny
This is why you don't play an obvious History of Jank deck in History, Joseph.
Keep the shock locked up
Fun fact frog isn't the only comptive deck that played obelisk dragon ruler of all deck played it. For the reason that a Normal summon obelisk is impossible to out in the ruler mirror match.
I am calling KZreads host abuse hotline for MBT
MBT should have got some coaching from Gage. He’s a lancer frog master.
Damn, always a pleasure to watch Yu-Gi-Oh become a game of solitaire. :^)
Cimo is out of auction ideas. That's why he uses the wheel almost every episode
