    Hello Dr. Rea! Thank you for another interesting and informative video! Since subscribing to your channel I have learned so much, and I thought that I knew a lot about dog and cat food after having pets for over 40 years but, boy, was I wrong! I am appalled to see that all of those pet food makers do not care one bit about the nutrient levels, i.e. calcium and phosphorus. I am also so worried that I have been doing it all wrong with my beloved 6-year old dog and 3-year old cat, thinking that I was giving them the best! I have switched them to Science Diet in the last few weeks, hoping that it is not too late and that I haven't created too much health damage for their kidneys by previously feeding them those "wonderful fad diets"! So sad to see how much the marketing industry can mislead pet parents like me who only try to do and to give the best to our furry babies! Please keep making these videos. You got it right! 😻🐶

    When I contacted Nulo about the nutrition levels in one of their foods, they sent me a box of free samples and coupons. The duck and cod adult DRY food, is the only dry food my cats eat. I use it mainly as a treat or late night snack. My cats also like the Turkey & Chicken wet food. It is all life stages and high in nutrients. That is why I asked you previously about mixing foods to mitigate the bad things. I mix the Nulo with a low nutrient adult food from Weruva. And I don’t feed commercial food every day. Thanks to you, I continue to look for better food. If Hill’s wet food for urinary hairball control weren’t so expensive, I would try it. Maybe in six years? LOL. Thank you for such an informative video.

    I tried switching to the Nulo Freestyle Limited Salmon diet and my pup broke out in hives all over his belly and inner hind legs. I immediately stopped the transition, saw my vet, and returned the food. Only reason I suspect it was the food is because it happened within 72 hours after first feed. I know my pup is not allergic to salmon, but I suspect it was the miscanthus grass they add to the kibble since my pup is allergic to different types of grasses.Shame on me for not catching that.

    MMI is funded through educational support from Hill's Pet Nutrition. Documented on their website. So any review of Hills foods will almost entirely align with the text, and almost all other brands won't. Not sure how I feel about that! Has there been any extensive research on an analysis outside of AAFCO guidance and/or raw food? I would like independent non affiliated research studies. If I had a nutritionist formulate a junk food balanced diet, that still wouldn't make it okay. I just feel like the pet food industry needs serious research, and it can't be by anyone affiliated with hills and purina

  • @AnimalDocRea

    @AnimalDocRea

    9 ай бұрын

    Well seeing as they are the only ones interested in funding any studies that’s not likely to happen. If you do research, then formulate your food to ensure it follows the research I’m not sure why there is a problem with that. The alternative is you base your food on warm fuzzy feelings devoid of research and that is what makes no sense. You do know any company could do research but they choose not to. They take that money and spend it on marketing and paying CEOs. I’m sorry but it’s not purina and hills fault they are the only ones willing to do research.

  • @AnimalDocRea

    I’m not arguing either, I’m just not sure realistically there is anyone outside the pet food/veterinary industry that would be interested in doing those studies. Other companies need to step up and start doing the work needed to substantiate their claims for me to abandon the current data. The other possible answer may be, no other company is willing or able to publish contrasting data because it isn’t possible. You can’t make a square peg fit a round hole. Thanks for the comment, I think you share similar concerns to many others and it’s good to encourage and challenge industry to improve. Ultimately companies give consumers what they want and if enough consumers demand sound research then they will be forced to do them. So in the end I think we both can agree on that.

    Do you think you could review McAdams Raw Preserve? It's the top rated dry food on All About Dog Food and I was shocked by how ridiculously high the protein and fat percentages are! 40% protein and 37.9% fat on a dry matter basis - and this is supposedly for all life stages. I love AADF but they really don't take into account the nutrients in dog food, which is a massive issue since the ingredients and the nutrients are both of equal importance if you ask me.

I used to feed freeze dried chicken to my hamster as a treat so this is definitely news to me :'). So what are your thoughts on freeze dried meat that stays dehydrated, since you say that the pathogens come back to life once it's been rehydrated? Either way, just going back to my original point - it's so ridiculous that a food with such a ridiculously high amount of fat and protein is listed as the top rated dry dog food. Especially when it's being advertised for all life stages - I'm lucky that my senior dogs (both nearing 10 years) are doing well on a dog food that would suit a regular adult dog by the Mark Morris Institute's standards, but there's no chance I'd ever give them something so ridiculously high in fat and protein as a permanent diet
