‘The World War III would begin and atomic bombs would fall on us’. This thought made several generations all over the world shiver. But the USSR collapsed, the Cold War came to an end, and it seemed like those fears remained in the past. But after the 24 February nuclear war threat aroused some serious talk once more. That’s why we decided to devote two WAS videos to the history of nuclear weapons.
In our first video we will tell you the history of atomic bomb development. You will learn why Nazi Germany failed to develop a nuclear bomb despite all their efforts, but the United States succeeded. We will explore whether the Soviet nuclear program relied on German developments (spoiler - it didn’t). We’ll also find out what role espionage played in American and Soviet nuclear programs (spoiler - considerable one). We will tell you about the Manhattan project, explain the difference between the Little Boy bomb and the Fat Man bomb, and finally recall the first use of nuclear weapons in the world - the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki on the final stage of World War II.
