I just got my book today from Amazon. It’s amazing. Just read chapter one, also joined the civil defense and waiting for my card

They make some aftermarket MRE heaters that will cook a raw egg! it's worth it to spend the extra money. I'm planning on buying some potting soil to store in my shelter, just in case I needed to grow inside my shelter or to make covered raised beds.

Right on, my family by choice! Today I was able to make my annual Costco run, and had my two favorite helpers go with me. It was only mildly chaotic. (In other words, it was a fun three hours of mayhem, lol) Got everything I'll need for the next 4 or 5 months, and I know I can stretch it to a full year if the world tanks. Next project: more garden! Not sure I'll know what to do if nukes land on my house, but I feel reasonably prepared if they land anywhere else. I am loving you all!

I think it's extremely important to note that if we had a major nuclear event meaning WW3 the world would not be the same place. I would say 90% of the society in America could not cut it. The vast majority of Americans have become entitled, lazy, and out of touch with nature. So many of us are so used to just being able to go down the road and grab lunch which can be prepared and ready for you in 15 minutes. So many Americans just waiting in a line at Starbucks for their coffee. So many Americans don't even know the first thing about farming or hunting or building a shelter. The other important thing to note is more than likely power would be a thing of the past after a WW3 sized event. Basic things we take for granted like plumbing and turning on a faucet and having water come out if it would be gone we're talking about reverting back to the 1700 and 1800s. The people that lived in the 1800s knew how to hunt, farm, build things, and survive. The people of more recent generations just can't cut it and do these things. This is why I believe at least 90% of the country would just die ...

I think you are wrong. Society won't go back to 1700 or 1800. In the most places, the infrastructure will be intact. And the knowledge will still be there. Medical knowledge that reduces child mortality and death in childbirth (in 1800 the doctors didn't wash their hands between two births because they didn't know that bacteria exists). Technological knowledge like combustion, welding, rubber, isolation, fertilizer,... There is no going back. And the farming isvdo efficient that it makes no sense that everybody does farming and hunting cannot sustain a bigger population. Even with the tribes of the Native Americans hunting didn't deliver enough food but for the one's that followed the herds of buffalos. There is a reason why 20000 years ago, mankind moved away from hunting to agriculture. So the people would have to adept after a nuclear war, but not totally. Society would stabilize - on some lower level. Less bullshit maybe. There is no time travel. Germany was destroyed after WWII quite like it would be after a nuclear war. Industrie and infrastructure were massively damaged (Look at pictures from that time). There were a lot of refugees (from the lost parts in the Sovjet Union, Poland and from East Germany). Government and administration were hit hard. In the winters after the war, there was hunger and people died of starvation and froze to death. About 100.000 (that was about 0.2% of the population). But the people adepted. They repaired the infrastructure, reinitiated Administration and government, ... There was no big riot, no killing hordes, no "I rob my neighbors and ra*e their wifes". That's not how mankind works. It is by division of work, cooperation and adaptation. And so the Germans rebuild their cities, repaired and improved their infrastructure and their industry. And mankind will, after a nuclear war. Maybe only 50% of the present population. But the USA in 1940 only had 132 million inhabitants. Today there are 380 Million. Would there be no civilization with 2/3 of the population dead? No, of course there would be a civilization.

Goshren Prepping has a 4-5 part series also. He was a Doctor in the military specialized in Nuclear.

Separett toilet systems separate the liquid from the solid making the smells and volume much more doable.

1. I would not rely on gravity fed filter system, because some isotopes are water soluble in small quantities. You really need either a high pressure reverse osmosis system, or a chemical water treatment method like ozone to convert soluble contaminates into insoluble so the filter can remove them. A Carbon filter is a must since odds are water will be contaminated with organic contaminates from burning plastics, that get atomized and fall in the rain. The best water source would be a deep well as usually water in deep wells is from rainfall that is several years old, but I would still recommend filter it with both for sediements & a carbon filter for organic contaminates. 2. IT WOULD NOT BE SAFE TO GROW FOOD IN CONTAMINATED SOIL. Plants will take up SR-90 & CS-137 which will produce contaminated food. The only way to be sure your food is uncontaminated is to grow it in soil that has not be exposed. This could be in a greenhouse, or from a garden that has been protected with a plastic cover to keep the fallout from contaminating the soil. However Its likely rainfall will have contamination for years, either fallout from nuclear powerplant melt downs, or just organic contaminates from fires. I suspect it take several years for the environment to settle out all of the contaminates to safe levels. IT IS NOT POSSIBLE TO CHECK FOOD USING a Geiger counter. The only way to test food for radioactive contaminates is with specialized equipment such as a HPGe meter which is not something you can buy. The other issue is that your soil is likely to be contaminated with organic contaminates from burning plastics (ie cities burning), or industrial plant leaks. NOTE Strontium 90 (SR-90) has a half life of about 29 years, and Cesium-137 has a half life of about 30 years. No way will these decay in a year after the war.

The suggestion most offered is to deep till the soil in HOPES to bury the radioactive material. Either that or scrape it off which is beyond most of us. Raised beds seem to be the better option...covered of course. Then the run off from rain won't saturate the otherwise covered soil. Strodium is a big concern but as one prepper mentioned - starve or risk cancer later.

@@nancyp1568 I doubt that would work. Best is to use plastic to cover it. The contaminates will get into the soil when it rains if its not covered.. Below about 6 inches there rarely is any top soil.

I agree with this. Rain however will clean up eventually due to the affects of the sun. Put away bags of things you need to create new top soil.

Imagine finally getting to venture out of your shelter, after a month...for a half hour! Is that per day or until the next month when we get a whopping full hour? I'm overjoyed already.

That would be one-half hour per day. You really need some kind of radiation monitoring device, and a little notebook to jot down daily readings so you have a better idea of what your initial radiation exposure outdoors is and if the decay of the isotopes is following the predicted course. Having a few of those Kevlar painter's bunny suits and respirator masks would add another element of protection if you disrobe before re-entering your shelter.

I did have some questions on the gardening. I think greenhouses normally have ventilation so to protect against dust, you would need to close that off. For covering plants, you would want to keep the tarp anchored to minimize dust. Do you end up leaving those in place for a month u til you come out? If so, would those plants survive? Of course you will have a lower radiation environment for the next crop which would be really good anyways. I am old and have been prepping for quite a while in a colder climate....I think a target would be to have enough to survivevtwo winters and one growing season, and hopefully not need it ever.

Discussed this recently with friends, as the Ukraine situation brings people to it and I have military experience so they wanted to ask without looking a bit silly with wider circle of people. Well I do have hope and positive, we used to read the Survive To Fight (British N.B.C. manual) in the 1980s, found myself thinking back to it when discussing the matter. Looks like that some tech does change, but he basics for getting through an event and being fit the otherside to have a good life are not much different? Anyhow good video and thanks from your friends in the UK.

Missing in this is how we are to clean the fallout off foods/materials safely. Will gloves, plastic raincoats...things people would have on hand...work or will the radiation go right through them. Also it would be nice to hear from someone a bit more knowledgeable on gardening after an attack. My plan is raised beds that I have covers for (I live out in the county away from anything major) in hopes that early on rainfall won't wash into them like it will on ground based gardens. Another question - how long will rainfall be contaminated? References would be great.

What if he wrote this all down and you shared that? I find him very difficult to follow and his presentation is scattered. We need solid how tos for EACH condition. And honestly don’t trust the gov at all for anything. SPELL IT OUT! For normal people is needed. He needs an interpreter.

Wood chips should, in theory, absorb and disperse the radiation safely for your plants 👍🏼

I use a lot of wood chips to top my garden and around my fruit tress. I'm thinking I could rake away the top layers to filter it out. Asplund is a company that cuts the trees out of the power lines in my area and they are willing to dump when in the area.

If you listened, its going to be a horrible way to die. So...depends on how well you want to go. Like my sister said, "I will just go outside and breath it in". I told her it takes weeks to months to years to die depending how close you are to the blast. If you lived, as we did, downwind from the NV test sites in the 50's and 60's you would understand. Sadly, it was a horrible way to die, people, pets, cattle, and the stench. What would you give up to LIVE.

Basically if you are in a fallout zone unless you have a premade bunker it's hopeless really I mean you have to think about waste both bodily and environmental also mental health of being in a quick quilt thing as you will be bored super quick and have no toilet facilities or re supply of food and water

I assume you mean the EMP Shield products. If you don't have backup power, does it matter to you at all? Your local, and possibly the national electric grid might be dead for years if we are hit with an EMP or CME. By the time it's up again you'll be long past depending on electric appliances the way we do today. If having an EMP-protected backup up power supply and protecting everything you need with an EMP Shield is your #1 preparedness step, you've missed the bus. Sorry. Your first step would be to have candles and lanterns, books - think analog. Then put together a basic Faraday cage and place a radio and solar charger, a tablet or laptop computer in it if you have your reference materials largely stored on digital media (like I do, my reference materials are mostly digital because books are heavy and take up so much room - and are more expensive). Build up your redundancy incrementally starting with the simplest, least technological means and then graduate to more elaborate ways to maintain your current standard of living. The final thing is this: Do you want to be the only place in your area with lights on at night in a world gone dark? It would make you a beacon in the same way that moths are drawn to your porch light now.

What about burning wood to heat up water/food once we can leave shelters?

If the wood comes from inside a house you are collecting fuel from, its OK to use inside . If it is wood unprotected outside, better use it outside so you won't get radiations inside your place and inside your fireplace.

Good information my concerns is how to construct a DIY Fallout Protection/Shelter for Home... money is limited, we don't have a basement...... staying in a shelter for a few hours is one thing but for 30 days or more.... we going to need something more than dig a hole in the ground.... I do have a house, unfinished garage, is there something I can do to there? To finish it for protection? Or construct a 10x10 shed outside? (more costly) Maybe the garage will be more cost efficient. I do have water and food supplies to carries us for a month....

Add an interior wall all around the garage(made of planks/plywood/aspenite), at 24 to 36 inches from the exterior wall, wrap in plastic and fill with dirt/sand/gravel. Add an interior ceiling with reinforce structure and fill of soil also. If garage is too big, go smaller with a double partition on the side far from the exterior wall. You can go also with sand bags, the same used for inundations).

I know if you’re not taking care of your sanitation properly it can be toxic so if you’re stuck in a shelter in your home and can’t go outside how do you handle the sanitation?

You put a bag in a 5 gal bucket with a toilet seat. Go to the bathroom. Put wood shavings over it. When full, Then tie up the bag. If there is a smell you just have to deal till you can go outside.

If u are in your shelter and have clean air and not going outside the pills are not necessary. When u first go outside u should start taking the pills 24 hrs prior.

Can you tell us what we need for a budget?

Really glad I found this video after stumbling across another one of your videos yesterday. Thank you so much, you've certainly given me more hope and calmed some anxiety that has really been mounting about this particular type of preparedness! The only thing I'm still struggling with is how to protect at least a small amount of chickens, meat rabbits and of course our dogs who not only are pets but help with a level of protection over our homestead. Of course if we are in a small place for 10-14 days without ever being able to leave even for a short time, trying to have enough food and water automatically supplied to these animals seems may be more challenging. And of course a sanitized environment for at least the dogs I'm struggling wrapping my brain around. Any feedback would greatly be appreciated!

I will be making diapers for my chickens so I can bring them indoors. Not the entire flock but a few and a rooster for eggs. I also will be fencing off an area under my deck of my walkout basement to try to give my dogs an area to go potty. I have years worth of canned protein for myself and animals and about 200 buckets of food that we can all eat. Hope this helps.

Some things I would wonder though is would it cause pasty butt or other diseases/parasites being contained up against them for so long? I was just thinking I would put mine in an area with a "deep litter" and for couple weeks or even a month that part should be ok. My concern isn't having enough food but being able to have something to serve the food to them for that length of time if I can't come out yet to do it. No way do I want to enclose ourselves within the same area for fear of contaminating us somehow breathing in those animal feces! Thanks for sharing your ideas though!

In a post nuclear war/events (plural, because it won't be singular) you'd rather have been at ground zero than continue trying to live after all that for the short amount of torturous time you would survive. I agree with being prepared and prepping for a catastrophe but, this is the one that is an exception and we can only hope and pray that it never happens. The amount of looming radiation, destruction of infrastructure is unthinkable. People, friends, neighbors etc., will kill you for your food and water. It will be a nightmare unlike anything imaginable. Prepping is great regardless, not saying we shouldn't be prepared but, no match for nuclear war.

Say you build a basement bunker and stay in there. How long till you can come out but stay in your basement and then how long till you can just stay in your house and not go outside? Will it help to put plastic on all windows and doors and vents with duct tape? Would it be safe to eat food that is in Mylar bags that are in totes or buckets?

30 days minimum in shelter, after that need to count rads to see how long and how often can move into other areas. If u are not in blast area, any sealed food needs to be washed off then can be eaten. Sealing windows, doors, etc is always a good idea to minimize contaminants getting in.

Mostly good info for impromptu delivery.

24:57 Wait! A thin tin can stops radiation from food, but you need 2-3 feet of earth to protect us? Something is not adding up here...

One other question. I shared the video I saw yesterday, I believe it would be the 1st one, with another preparedness minded friend, and she sent me an article about the aftermath causing a nuclear winter where the things described there indicate freezing temps for a long time and no sun for a decade!! She said no way we could store up 10 years of supplies and planting wouldn't be feasible for that length of time. My initial thought was growing under grow lights indoors but I don't know the power grid would be available and if no sun, my solar generator won't do anything and my whole house propane one will,eventually run out. So that was a very stark difference to what i have learned here in these 2 videos. Any thoughts?

First, the possibility of a nucleur winter is small. If one occurred, windmills would be the best power source. Winds would still be going. Looking at hiroshima, nagasaku and several volcanos which put large amounts debris into the air, most cleared in 2 to 3 weeks. Rain cleared several in days.

@@russellgilson3536 I think the ice storms in Texas showed up the vulnerability of windmills to ice-jamming. No one knows if a nuclear conflict would be limited, or everyone would launch everything they had while they could. I believe the US nuclear war battle plan intends to hit every Russian silo and strategic target multiple times, so they are planning to use almost everything in the arsenal immediately. That's a lot of dust and fallout that will circumnavigate the northern hemisphere within weeks before being carried across the equator to the southern hemisphere. It will definitely not clear out in a few days or weeks.

I don't think it's even possible to launch every nuclear weapon at the same time. Reason being, and even IF ever Russia attacks USA, it will be high altitude EMP. Technology dies, not you. But you will then see a mayhem of our generation. Or in general, it doesn't matter target, it could be EU. There is air defences on every site you know. Also agree with feoxorus for multiple targeting opponent's arsenal/bunkers of leaders or whatever. I also think under the ground you have better chance of survival than in cold building full of "zombies" fighting for food and drinking poisoned water. These zombies will be sorted out untill it will be safe for you to hang arround your bunker - whatever form you will make it. Place panels strategically. Not sure which video he says ONE MONTH stay sheltered, ONE YEAR stay indoors.

I live in so central Utah and need more 55 gal water barrels. Anyone know of a source that sells them at a good price? Need about 10.

Is it a door going out of the basement and the rest is underground? Or you have almost a full basement wall exposed? If it is just the door, fill with sand/gravel/soil2 or 3 feet wide. If it is a full wall, maybe reconsider going with somebody with a regular basement. Or, you have to fill the outside with the above or, concentrate your sand/gravel/soil in bags from floor to ceiling 2 feet wide or more. If no bags , install 2 temporary partitions walls that will create the cavity you need and fill with dirt .

The walkout hatch or window slider would have to be fully covered with soil, from the outside. The more, the better, including any windows.

@@debbiec6216 sand bags will work just as well. Also, as for your interior shelter, water bricks would supplement the protection gotten from canned food, and both are necessary preps anyway, make them do double duty.

14:06 OK, no more than 200 RAD's accumulative per month or 6 months? Then what is the rate of decay in your body? Is that the same as the 2 weeks for fallout? So much not discussed here.

I worked n Norfolk VA in 1976 when the red Chinese exploded a nuke n the cloud didn't break up n when u went outside your skin burnt.

Would lugols iodine work? If so, how much? And what about pets?

Lugols is a GREAT idea, and you could rub it onto the skin of your pet also. Watch for rash, though, as some will show allergic reaction to idodine in this way. I would use normal dosage and reduce it by weight for your pet.

On my Potassium Iodine it says, People older than 45 years should not take it, because it does more harm than good and also you should only take it once and not as mentioned here for 90 days on a row

Short answer? NO. Plastic will stop particulates from coming in(simple dock tape would do the same). You need MASS, between you and radiations, soil/sand/gravel/concrete etc.

I only have a crawlspace to shelter in, I'll have to depend on the roof, walls and sealing up all windows and vents to keep particulates out. I'll then build up mass on my floor over the crawlspace area I will be occupying. I have plastic sheeting, a stapler and rolls of tape to cover the inside of every window, door, vent and light fixture. On the roof I'll be covering my stove pipe and vent pipes with contractor bags and securely tying them on. Time, distance and shielding is the mantra you need to keep in mind: the shortest possible exposure time to ionizing radiation, stay as far from it as possible and put as much mass between you and the radiation as possible.

you find potassium in potatoes and bananas, no worry here. For the time inside your ''bunker'' the best for the lowest radiation rate is 3 months from explosions if you do not have a post nuclear war RADMETER. Forget those cheap radmeters that read environment radiations they would saturate instantly and stop working. If you cannot stay that long I give you the law of 7. If USA is attacked, they will use high altitude boms that will create EMP's, those will destroy the electric grid. If you see transformers blowing at every post, you are there. Start counting, because bombs to the ground will follow soon. For each increment of 7 hours , you loose 90% radiation: 7h00, 49h00, 343h00(2 weeks), 2401h00(14 weeks or 3 months). in senior multivitamins you normally find potassium iodide with the daily recommended dose, read the bottle before buying. Iodine in suspension in oil is also excellent , like lugol's

There are calculations available to determine the relative decay of radioactive isotopes. I don't recall the exact percentage lost over time but it's something like 90% in the first 48 hours, another 90% over the next 14 days. It always depends on the initial radioactivity your location starts with, and that's why having even a cheap radiation detection device is important. Also, it's important to learn about the difference between rads, rems, sieverts and how they relate to your exposure and uptake of gamma radiation. Some radioactive isotopes from a blast are unstable and decay to relative inertness in fractions of a second, hours or a few days. Others are more persistent and can be problematic for years, or millenia. If your initial reading is 200 rems/hour you are going to be living in your shelter for a long time because that's a fatal dose in about 5 minutes - it just takes weeks to liquify your internal organs.

I know someone allergic to iodine. Do they just take apple pectin pills? If so, what would the dose be?

Pectin will remove heavy metals and radio-active particles in the digestive system ONLY. So the thyroid is at risk.

Okay, so if you recall, distance, time and shielding is your best friend against fallout. another important factor is to either find or create a 90° angle on your entrance. Ventilation and clean water and good are paramount. Make sure you and your son have ample cold weather clothing and sleeping bags for the winter to come. Have lots of socks and shoes.

James, have no fear, regardless if you are a believer or not, your son is innocent. Death is not the end. Be strong your son is counting on you. Plus the odds of you being affected are slim, unless you live in a few different places. Also be logical my dude, why would any sane person want to destroy something they are trying to aquire. Porta potty will not last more than a few days. Have some empty gallon bottles for urine. And only use the potty for solids. Better to use a bucket and wood shavings for solids it smells less.

Your thyroid will work until you die. So it will collect any iodine for its need. If it is radio-active, the alpha/beta particles will ''cook'' your thyroid, leading to sickness and death.

Its not true. They are comparing younger with olders. Youngest still have developing bodies etc and much more damage happens to them and sooner due to being younger and a 20 yr old would die at 40 instead of 70 etc.. Olders that are 50 and above that would pass away in 20 years anyways is what they are referring to. But everyone should take it iodine if they have it. Hope that makes lol more sense.

You do one small thing first and check it off your list. It's like eating an elephant: one bite at a time. Everyone can find a few minutes every day to write out their plan, evaluate their situation and brainstorm for off-the-wall solutions. And it doesn't take a lot of money either.

Yep. Everywhere. First across the whole northern hemisphere and then across the equator after a few weeks. And the dust will be many thousands of feet up in the atmosphere - 20 miles or more. 70% of our planet is covered with water, everything living in the lakes, rivers and oceans will be contaminated to some degree.

You know, I've been thinking lately. The prophet and apostles keep saying the faithful need not fear. No fear. The future is bright for the faithful. I believe them. And the Church said nothing more than that we should have a food and reasonable water storage and to not go to extremes. Food and water, that's it. I have lots of dry basic foods and some water. Honestly, what do you think that means that they have been saying?

It's been commanded by the Prophets to have provisions for harder times. This will be our greatest test if indeed something like this does happen. That's the physical preparation aspect that the Church advises. Listen to E. Bednar a couple years ago. They speak as if, if you have food and water and you are well spiritually, you need not fear.

If we do not have a community around us with some of the same knowledge, how can we be expected to survive? This information is invaluable. a garbage bag with some pine pellets fir urine and poo. and a bucket with a hole in the lid to sit on.out the garbage bag inside.when it's full put in a large can with a lid in the basement.

some people might not know this but if you have a swimming pool and a nuclear bomb goes off near you, you can jump in the pool, or ocean, or lake. Water dissipates the radioactive particles. It's not long term solution but can save your life temporarily.

The people of St George Utah ☢️ Had 6 nuclear tests have fallout from Nevada tests land on them. Survive the first two weeks without exposure to significant fallout and your chances are good. Plutonium half-life is 24,000 years and is hard to detect with most common type Geiger Counters. Pancake tubes can detect alpha emitters like plutonium or a BPX-61 p-i-n photodiode based alpha spectrometer MCA. There are two things to consider. External radiation the body can handle huge doses safely compared to ingestion or inhalation 🫁 of radionuclides. Sr-90 and Cs-137 in the soil is your long-term 🪴 growing food exposure.... Testing of the soil before you garden IMHO even now in places like St George Utah ☢️...

Be mindful that if you go with solar (solar panels can be large) then you will be painting a huge target on your property. You will have what most people will not have around you: power, and everyone will want it.

I'd spend $50 on cheap LED headlamps and batteries because if they are actually fried you are not out much money and you still have a supply of AAA batteries for something else. You could also stash the headlamps in a Faraday cage to improve their chance of survival. In the end, that's why you diversify and have multiple ways to do the same thing. You don't put all your eggs in the same basket: you have battery-powered LED lights, candles, hurricane lamps and fuel. You have a full gas can or two stored in case your vehicle does actually run. Giving someone a definitive answer about something that no one actually knows is disingenuous.

What are you talking about when you say a nuclear 'event'? Are you talking about a terrorist 'dirty' bomb, a reactor meltdown, or are we talking about a large scale nuclear exchange between the US and Russia where thousands of nuclear weapons are likely to explode over the US? You can't really treat these kinds of scenarios with such enormous variation in the expected aftermath as one. If preparation for substantially increasing the percentage of the US population surviving following a large-scale nuclear exchange is so easy and affordable, why doesn't the US government have a fallout shelter network any longer? I don't think they even have a department of civil defense any longer. I tend to think that following a large-scale nuclear exchange involving the US the obstacles to survival are going to be insurmountable for many, if not, most Americans. Admittedly, there are a lot of unknowns, but I think we do have a pretty good idea it's likely to be pretty grim... for a long time. Although extinction of humans is very unlikely, even that outcome can't be ruled out. I guess I agree with doing what you can to survive. It gives something to do during the time immediately proceeding a nuclear attack. What's more, if nothing else, it might give you more choice as to the time and manner of your death. I'd rather die of radiation sickness, or starvation with my loved ones around me... in some relative peace, as opposed to seeing myself and others going into psychosis following witnessing the unimagiable horror of nuclear detonations and the vast deatlh and suffering that will surely follow. I suppose if it does turn out that life is so miserable following a large-scale nuclear exchange one can always commit suicide. But since the number of unknowns are so substantial, why do that prematurely?

Nice discussion, but I don't think really important topic was addressed - what happens to government, social order and economic infrastructure after nuclear war? If Russia has all it's nukes in working order, there might be more than 1000 powerful nukes detonating in US mainland. What will be left? Will there be lawlessness and gangs assuming total control? In a total global nuclear war, entire global climate/environment will be drastically changed resulting in collapse of global food production (even if farmers survived). So I don't think it's safe assumption to say things will be back to "normal" after a year or so.

I'm 67 years old with a handicap brain damage paraplegic Son. I don't think I would want to live through radiation event. That would last for years everything would be ruined
