I think Scott will win because Mark tries to get him with topspin but he knows how to get it off from the ground, taking that weapon away from mark leaves mark with his serve and backhand.

My god Ian, the quality of this match, the editing of the video, the cliff hanger at the end of the vid...you are turning this channel up 10 notches. Good job buddy. If you can start a private tournament series with matches like this, even just among friends like Ira, Kevin, Mark, Scotty, green shirt guy, tennis trolls....so on. I am willing to pay money to see a series like that with this kind of production quality.

After seeing this, Scott is making all the highlight shots, but until now he made just a few " too many" unforced errors. Mark can be just solid enough to make fewer mistakes. That is what wins most matches. If Scott is able to keep the pressure & make less mistakes, it can still Turn around for him. The camera watching is an extra opponent. It makes it so much harder to play your own normal game. Be loose, quick on your feet, quick in your mind agile on the court. A camera makes it so much harder. Great job guys!

Maintenance! My approach has been to always stay active and competitive, and I spend a decent amount of time in the gym to keep muscle mass and flexibility. Speed does drop off a little, but I run, sometimes doing intervals (200-800m) at an uncomfortable pace to push myself. I don’t have a rigid diet, but I generally eat relatively healthy. I’ve been pretty lucky to stay healthy this long, but I work at it and I’m mindful of my limits.

This is awesome. Tennis matches can be so boring. This was definitely not boring. This was just good tv. Plus the camera angles are perfect. The pro tour should have the same back angle you do. Just that one angle makes this all great to watch. And why does Scott look more intimidating than any top pro I've seen on tour. He hulks every shot it seems like. Also I'd watch a series with Marks still the best to watch. And I love Ian's reactions. This was awesome.

I love both players and here is what I learned based on the video: Mark: Mark is very consistent but can make a few errors here and there which is expected from any tennis player that lives and breathes and especially with the cameras on him. Sometimes I notice when he makes an unforced or forced error, he talks to himself a little bit loudly which I can understand but I would work on that because it gives the opponent the sense that that shot or strategy gets Mark annoyed and will bring down his game mentally. Mark hits very clean and I love the one-handed backhand. Especially on the return of serve Mark is ready and sharp despite the fact that he may have missed a few serve returns in every service game of Scott. As said at 4:47 sometimes when you are pushed deep it is harder to hit the ball but at the moment I would try to hit a higher ball with more depth so you have more time and more pressure on the opponent when you return to the middle of the court. Marks serve is also fantastic with not only power but a very accurate placement and that gets Scott moving and making forced errors and dumping those balls into the net or hitting it long. I loved the strategy displayed by Mark as well. When Scott would hit a deep ball to his backhand with spin or just regular topspin, he would slice it back but make it a deep one and Scott would usually miss a lot of those due to the spin and depth of the ball and that was played and executed very well in my opinion. Example: (5:48) Scott: Scott is a great player with an amazing serve with the same placement and power that can be easily generated. His second serves are also not a liability and can attack Mark with the spin and accurate placement. I feel like the pressure got to him because there are many cameras in and as mentioned in the beginning it felt very tense and not loose at all. Mark experienced the pressure before so that is a big asset for Mark but very well played to shake off that pressure and continue fighting and holding serve I feel that Scott may have a bigger and better serve but Mark's serve is not that far behind. Scott just generates a bit more speed and less double faults although Mark could hold his serve equally as well as Scott did. I would work on returning better since Mark's serve is not as powerful as Scott but Scott made around the same amount of mistakes. (Again I will tribute this to the pressure) I also noticed on Scott's return that he tends to punch the ball back a lot (which Scott does as well) but Scott's punches seem to land in the middle of the court while Mark's punches travel to the end which is better since it pushes the opponent back more. (Not all the time but in some of the cases) So again a little bit more work on Scott's return and that would be amazing. Towards the end and the middle Scott noticed that his blocks weren't too effective and changed it to attack more and move in more to pressure Mark which was an astute call Overall, these players are both amazing and can generate an amazing match which I can't wait for Part 2. Keep up the great content Ian and for Scott and Mark, good luck because you two are amazing players. (Sorry for some grammar issues haha I didn't read this over again) Some of my favorite Mark quotes: "Ace me I dare you" "I know it's a good serve I hit it" "If you were truly committed you would have dove for that stop being a wuss" "I got to ride this momentum train to the end of the set" My favorite Scott quote: "He's going to have to take this from me, I'm not going to give it to hi

Scott is the better player, he is nervous, he is pulling up on the ball. I would too with 3 cameras taping and knowing it is going on the channel. I am going to be 66 in February and get around the court a bit faster than Scott, but I have never seen myself on camera. So we all know that could be night and day from how we think we play. Young guys out there, with todays medicine and joint supplements be assured you will be playing real good tennis in 40 years, if you keep playing. I started playing again about 2 and a half years ago, really have the tennis bug. Thee videos on KZread are amazing. I never had a lesson, but since watching these videos, I have actually changed my forehand and backhand to the more modern strokes. Great stuff to watch. Maybe in a year or two I will have the courage to come play on this channel. Good goal to have. Great stuff Ian.

@@EssentialTennis thanks Ian, great watching part 2 yesterday. I could still see, just my observation, that Scott was tight and was feeling the pressure of the situation. Mark is a really good player, I wish I had either one of these guys to hit and play with right now. Mark had a slight advantage having been on this channel before. Would love to see a rematch between these two. Scott would play a lot better and more relaxed I think. My regular tennis partner is out for another month. I only have played one hr in 2 weeks. No excuse because I have a good ball machine and need to develop some new muscle memory on the changes I am trying with my one hand backhand. But, I need to seek out some players, hopefully ones a bit better who push us to hit an extra ball during a rally or follow up on a shot that is usually a winner but not so much with this person. It is one of the very best ways to get better and the most fun. Keep up the great content.

@@EssentialTennis thanks, you stay well, I know you are working very hard to keep your business going, with the major changes that happen. If you ever come to Southern California I would love to play a little with you. I moved here 3 years ago from New Jersey, such a different opportunity to play tennis. You can play all year long, I just have to make the effort to seek out some players. My goal is to start playing some tournaments next year. 50 and over, see how I do. Would rather play better players and lose,, than win easier with players that might be worse than me.

I am loving this match. The confessionals are great and the candid "thoughts-out-loud" are super entertaining. Based on his commentary, Ian seems to have already picked Scott as the better player and Mark "putting up a good fight". I tend to agree, but they both look equally talented to me. It can go either way. This video is nicely done! Please do doubles next time - same format! :)

Fantastic stuff. Scott does have good hands, but he's being overly aggressive on Mark's serve. I don't have a problem with him attacking the 2nd serve, but there were quite a few first serves that he was returning well inside the baseline while moving forward. Almost as though he was looking to chip and charge. Both have really good forehands, but their backhands look slightly vulnerable. Gripping contest.

One comment I absolutely must leave for Mark... Something I've had to tell my advanced students or people I've worked with... You MUST try to reduce your negative comments. It's natural to feel discouraged, upset whatever with yourself but if you do so, also do the opposite. Tell yourself "good shot" when you do hit one. "Nice serve" whatever. Say positive things to yourself. I learnt that from Jim Loehr himself at a seminar.

I think they both played really well. Congrats Mark! I actually think I played really well yesterday! I hit like 7+ winners! My best one was a down the line backhand right in the ally! My best one yet! Pretty much all I heard was awesome Danica! Great shot! One person even said wha...when I returned the ball! We played doubles and the partner would always say sorry, my fault. I was like don’t worry about it! Except some ball were mine and they jump out in front and me thinking I could’ve gotten it. But you can’t blame the partner. Sometimes that’s a little hard. Have you ever thought that? But, yeah Mark and Scott played really well from my POV!
