A lot of people don't get that...I dated girls from rival debate schools way back when, but we were properly vicious to one another in-round. If learning that someone who disagrees with you about policy matters can be your friend is all we get, I think the activity does a great service.

Debate and Speech are hands down one of the most important and underrepresented classes for young students to take around the world. @@hellohowareyou9745 I would disagree with this point. You are making assumptions about the judging process that are not consistent. A large part about winning a debate round is being the "Angels," on the simple premise that an attitude of wanting to help others and politeness is attractive to judges. If you have a judge that is leaning against you in a round and you begin acting rudely during cross-examination, it doesn't communicate a winning position, it just communicates that you either don't know what you are talking about or that you are just a jerk. Sure, a judge who already tenders towards your side might see a dominated cross-examination as a positive, but any experienced judge is not going to be at that point in such early stages of debate. The only thing you'll accomplish is creating judge bias against you. And this can even happen with lay judges because if they have no leanings to who is winning due to obliviousness, they will be more open to voting for the team that was professional and articulate. No competent coach is going to tell you otherwise, so you are wrong in saying that it is what you are supposed to do.
