NRC Guidelines - Is Your Dog's Raw Meal Balanced?

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

Balancing is intimidating, but this guide is here to help!
What you may be wondering after learning about these fresh whole foods is "how much should I be adding in each day/week?" This is something I left out solely because I only know my own dog's recommended allowance. Personally I got a lot of help from moderators (who are also nutritionists) in the Raw Feeding University Facebook group, as well as some of the files within the group. Along with this, it's also very beneficial to get assistance from nutritionists that offer meal plans and diet assessments:

Honestly my vet isnt a huge fan of the raw diet, but I love her because she respects my research and journal. She has started researching more for me in addition to recommending a nutritionist. She definitely worries about human safety and balanced bowls the most and doesnt trust owners in general who inquire or hear it as a 'trend.' She also advises against grain free kibbles as they oftentimes arent balanced or are balanced synthetically.

Me and my wife are vegetarian and we raw feed! I’ll admit I’m a meat cutter in a grocery store so I’m pretty knowledgeable about handling, finding, and overall meat info to begin with, but it has been great, my pup is thriving and this diet just makes sense! We feed reptiles and other carnivorous pets whole/raw food why wouldn’t our dogs thrive on this too? Seriously do your research though, primal pack is an amazing starting source and she’ll get you 90% of the way but there’s a lot to cover out there, especially in sourcing meat products, grass vs grain fed, organic vs natural, pasture raised, free range, ect. there’s lots of lingo out there to sort through, and they all will have an influence on how you balance your dogs meals.

  • @thehat222

Idk The commercial dog food industry is not where vegetarians or people who care about animal welfare should look when sourcing their dog food. You don’t know the sourcing of the meat used meaning the animals could be treated horribly, by sourcing meat yourself you can acquire local, humane, ethically sourced foods to provide cleaner nutrition for your dog, kibble is highly processed, burnt food and has tons of carcinogens, synthetic fillers, and ingredients proven to cause health issues (like starches, grains, sugar, MSG, BHA, Melamin, Carrageenan, and more) the animals in that dog food could have been pumped with steroids, antibiotics, pesticide filled grains, and were probably treated like shit. If you care about animals, kibble ain’t it.

Hi, I love your content and appreciate the service you provide to pet owners (in my opinion you deserve more subs) . I have come across something at one of my local meat markets that I have questions about. The label says it is a beef variety mix that contains in this order: kidneys, tongue, heart, fat, swertbreads, and , spleen. My question for you is if this product would be useful in a balanced diet and how I should correctly portion It? I bought a few pounds to have on hand and have used some in a few of my dogs meals (about 15% because it also contains muscle and fat) is this a good ratio to use everyday or would it be better to balance over time?

Great channel with great info. I don't want to start a fight here, but just to express my opinion. I think if you feed your dog with all of this many wild carnivores would be envious, as they don't get all of that. They do eat whole small prey or large carcasses, so that is how I try to balance my dogs diet. No oysters, vitamin drops, etc. I'm just saying your way may be overdoing it and viewers may be reluctant to try with all involved, thinking all of that is an absolute must. Keep up the good work, I'm still watching your videos they are good

  • @PawsofPrey

So the reason why we suggest to feed vitamin drops/shellfish/etc is because a diet of raw meat, bone, and organ isn't going to provide the same nutrient variety as a whole prey animal (like you're feeding!) So we have to add it back in manually. The goal is whole prey, but that's not always accessable or cheap, so we just need a way to feed a homemade raw diet with species appropriate foods that provide missing nutrients back in. That's why there's so much variety

Pumpkin seeds looked like a good option as they contain both zinc and manganese. I wasn't sure how much to include but just from looking at the video, it seemed like a spoonful per meal was the right sort of amount so I added 30g of sunflower seeds (for Vit E) and 30g or pumpkin seeds (for zinc and manganese) a day, soaked, dried and finely chopped; turns out a spoonful is nowhere near enough.. My 7 month old puppy is showing signs of hair loss around her hind legs and a zinc deficiency could be the cause. I then found out that there is 8mg of zinc in 100g of pumpkin seeds and 5mg in sunflower seeds and the recommended amount of zinc for a puppy is 25mg. That means if I was to only use pumpkin seeds as my source of zinc I would need to puree 300 grams a day! It would have been useful to include how much zinc is in the nuts that are mentioned as I've been hugely under estimating but that's on me for not doing more research elsewhere. My only real option is to add the zinc from a 20mg pill that my sister in-law just happened to give to my wife recently (she's a bit of a herbal hippy). So here's a word of caution for anyone else who might think a little spoonful of crushed nuts will fill all the nutrient gaps. It won't. Double and triple check the amount you need, the perfectlyrawsome.com site has most of the info you need. (PS I'm still hunting for iodine, hard to find here in Spain)

I top off his dishes with raw toppers from Primal or Instinct. I think I need a supplement or something as I don’t feed full raw diet at the moment. However I wish to cook all his food. Wow! That seems like a lot of different meats. My girl is a terrier mini pincher mix. She’s 7yr old and 15lbs and started her on a all meat diet after weaning off kibble. However I’m just feeding her lean steak and she’s still having loose black stools. I read that maybe because of digestive issues I should partly cook it? Also how do I add all those other meats without her having issues. I’d like to keep it as simple and cost effective. Do I have to add all those other things you mention? Can eggs be given raw or cooked. My dog doesn’t do well with chicken but haven’t tried Turkey so not sure if it will bother her. How do I find salmon without bones. Also where can I buy green tripe? I’ve looked for duck necks but extremely expensive to ship. Thanks for any help you can give.

May I give him small amounts of the fruit also? or dehydrated carrots, and sweet potato if I keep them as a very small percentage? and do you believe that any grain is bad such as quinoa in small amounts? You said to soak the seeds, is it ok to give soaked ground flaxseed?

Was curious when adding these do their current diet if you subtract it from the calories. His calories are based off of 50% muscle meat, 25% muscle organ, 12% raw meaty bone, 5% liver and 8% secreting organ. I was sure if I should cut back on calories to fit them in or not. I’m aiming for him to lose some weight so I wasn’t sure what the best route would be.

Would you say Rabbit is one of the best protein bases? Its very lean and also could, im not sure, qualify as raw bone requirements. Would you be willing to create and make 3 recipes based in rabbit meat? I am willing to pay for a consultations. Are the rabbit organs also sufficient for those nutritional needs?

Up front is when it would cost you the most from buying things like kelp or iodine drops, nuts and seeds, wheatgrass powder, or vitamin e oil, mussels or GLM powder, fish or fish oil - things like that. But they often last a pretty good while! I'd have to add everything up and divide it out!

Does the USDA data include bone weight even though it excludes bone nutrients? For example, does 100g of "Chicken, broilers or fryers, wing, meat and skin, raw" mean with the bone? My NRC balance spreadsheet could be off by 20-80% depending on the percentage of bone. This could mean my puppy won't have all the NRC-required nutrients.

Hello! I’ve been feeding my pup a raw diet for almost a month and a half now and he’s been healthier and more energetic than ever. I think it’s time for me to switch from a weight based diet to caloric based, but I’m really confused on how to do the math. For example my pup needs 0.4 oz(12ish oz) of raw meaty bone. I usually give him chicken neck. How would I find the caloric value?

Hey hi.. I am very new to raw feeding my 3.5 months puppy.. he was on a popular kibble diet and suddenly his gut started acting up. Long story short, I am eager to start feeding raw following the NRC guidelines. Just one doubt, all calculations done but what I cannot figure out is that if I feed approx 550 grams of raw chicken per day (calculated after seeing your video), won't the daily allowance for protein exceed for him (56 grams per day)? This confused me.

What are good sources for some of these ingredients? Its easy to find liver, necks, yogurt, sardines, etc etc, but finding bone with fur on, or kidneys have proven difficult. There are a number of butchers around my area but apparently for legal reasons they cant sell certain organs, (or at least what I'm told).

Thanks! Raw fed and nerdy has a great spreadsheet where you can keep track of your dog's macros. I personally eyeball it and check certain cuts on FoodData Central to keep an eye on numbers. Matsu is fed once a day, but on occasion, like if we are really active that day, his meal will be split into 2 feedings. He actually prefers to eat in the evening over morning and evening.
