Nowhere to Run: Kenya's Climate Refugees

Imagine being displaced from the place you’ve known as your home not by anyone, but by factors beyond you. You move to a place where you are at the mercy of wild animals, and other risks such as diseases, drought, and vandalism. In this story, Nakuru and Baringo families share their agony of being rendered homeless by the impact of climate change. At the same time, the displaced families have little knowledge on mitigation, the changing weather patterns and no support from the government.
The World Bank’s Groundswell Africa’s recent report on the environment warns that climate change will cause up to 86 million Africans to migrate within their countries by 2050. This includes about 38.5 million people from within the Lake Victoria basin, including Kenya.

This is a powerful story. The government must take action to tame this crisis. When other Kenyans are going through hard times to find water for domestic use, on the other side water is ravaging their lives. Something must be done.

Africa is the least prepared, and governments seem unprepared to handle these disasters that will be far too frequent in the days to come.

Some people are dying coz of draught others are displaced by water. Govt should allocate money to irrigate dry areas with fresh water from these lakes. Maybe it can maintain the water levels.

I believe county governments can allocate a fund for climate change that can help mitigate against such destructions and protect people. Dredging of existing rivers can offer a viable solution to increase water storage capacity and reduce the encroachment into human settlements. But we must all take responsibility for climate change. Otherwise it will be the end of us.

These people are real heroes. They have remarkable resilience. May God bless them and give them comfort and mental strength to overcome their challenges. Isaiah 65:21 "They will build houses and live in them, And they will plant vineyards and eat their fruitage". Jehovah is well aware of the struggles of his creation, His people and He yearns for the time He will right the wrongs they have faced.

prof Gilbert has explained well the possible causes of the flood disaster. for human disturbance controlling population near these lakes would reduce the floods and at same time reduce victimization. Tectonic movement and climate change are natural causes little can be done.

That, yes, but I feel theres a solution for these people to reclaim their land. Silt buildup in the lake is one of the reasons it's over spilling; the bottom could be dredged, dykes/ diverting water flow is another option. Rethinking housing design with elevation and waterproofing. Of course, will need the motivation and funding to get it done but giving up is not an option. Edit: we know about climate change and tectonic activity, doesn't mean we can't adapt to deal with it. This is how we have geothermal plants.

But the knowledge of the consequences is there, if blame is to be laid is to the government for not acting on information. What is the point of having scientists if what they know isn't put into action?
