you want foreshadowing? the defuct turret all the way back at the start of the game mentions cave's lines, caroline as well as compares glados to prometheus "prometheus was punished for giving the gift of knowledge to mankind. he was cast into the bowels of the earth and pecked by birds." glados (as a potato) was sent to the bottom of the salt mines and pecked by birds in chapter 6

Fun fact: instead of destroying the old buildings aperture just built over the, so when you fall down the multiple stories you essentially fall through time, the one Sean’s in at the beginning of the game is the 70’s then the 80’s then- you get the point

it took me a while to realize that the area you fall in after the huge pit fall is what supports aperture science. It's when you enter the huge vault door that you enter the old enrichment center.

More like the police investigations (mentioned on a poster) after the disappearance of some of the test subjects (mantis men, tumors, exploding microchips in skulls) caused the company to have to shift to homeless test subjects to avoid more inquiries and the likely decline in Olympians & such wanting to sign up for testing. Because apparently no one else cares if some homeless people disappear(and I'm highly offended by that as a former homeless person myself, Mr. Johnson)! Also, Black Mesa stealing inventions from Aperture and the government finally noticing the disappearance of homeless people factor into it as well.

The coolest thing in my mind is the evolution of Aperture throughout the years. When you get into this old area that was built in the 60s you get greeted as an astronaut, a war hero and as Cave says you got there by limo. But later when you get to the 70s area Cave Johnson says about bankruptcy and offers only sixty bucks to whatever homeless person they picked up from the street. The amount of subtle storytelling in his pre-recorded messages is phenomenal. Sad that Jack didn't talk about it(or maybe didn't notice) but I get that he's too busy making jokes and gushing out about lighting stuff Update: The loss of money also conveyed through the fact that we're a lot higher up because it is way to expensive to get stuff that deep down. And as we go through the history of Aperture Science we're also moving up closer to the surface

He did mention that he's trying to avoid spoilers, and there are more clues going forward - I only found out recently that there is a poster for the testers in the 70's (homeless, psych patients & orphans). They got $60 for testing which was doubled if they consented to vivisection & reassembly. The testing subjects then devolve into Aperture staff as testing becomes compulsory for everyone present... Btw I love that each section is a product of its time, with the date painted onto the wall and the furniture/tech being from that era (the seventies having that godawful cream & brown colour scheme that just screams "technology")

I just realized... Everything in the facility can run at 1.1 volts... The potato outputs 1.1 volts, which explains how GLaDOS can operate with a potato battery.

Fun Game Dev Fact(since Sean likes that stuff): Portal 2 makes heavy use of an element of the source engine known as triggers. Triggers are used to do something when Chell enters them e.g. the launchpads. One of the uses for them is what's known as "scripted momentum". It basically changes your momentum to a crertain value and is used when you need to jump in through a portal and utilise your stored momentum. That means that all those jumps are actually scripted, which is the reason they always seem perfectly executed.

I love how Cave went from selling shower curtains to the military to making a device that uses black holes to create interdimensional teleportation gates, several new elements, shoes that negate falls from any height, and a functional human/AI hybrid alongside his many existing AIs, as well as accessing the multiverse. That said, his competitors also made some interesting things like near infinite energy, other types of portals, and gravitational manipulation. Though Cave doesn't seem to have much in the way of safety concerns (repulsion gel is listed on the sign Jack read as 'slightly less non-toxic', yet is a food substitute). Also, to answer your question, the Enrichment Shafts at the bottom of the salt mines are the oldest, which is why as you work your way up the testing track (which goes up with each chamber) you get to see the changes in Aperture Science, even with their logo and company name. After a time, it was sealed off for various reasons and the Enrichment Center was built on top of it and testing continued, after which GLaDOS gassed the entire staff. She maintains the Enrichment Center, but cannot access much of the lower sections even after control is restored due to the lack of comparable technology down there, such as the moving panels, and also does not bother with the areas near the surface.

The sound effects when solving stuff are one of the key reasons solving puzzles in the Portal series is so satisfying. It's really genius game design. If you haven't I recommend even listening as you fly through the air on launch pads and solve puzzles in both Portal 1 and Portal 2 (you can even look at previous episodes here). The sound design is absolutely genius. For example, listen to how it changes at 23:06

Oh man imagine thinking you’re getting to experiment with repulsion gel so you jump expecting to bounce like a ball only to find out it the hard way that i was just blue paint. 😂 I’ve beaten Portal 2 twice and I knew that Cave Johnson was really funny but now that I’m actually paying more attention to what he’s saying, I’ve learned that I’ve missed funny details like that lol.

Whenever you finish this game I would highly recommend playing Portal Stories: Mel. It’s a fan game that a lot of Portal fans worked on and honestly feels like it could have been made by the actual team based on the sound, visuals, writing, and gameplay. I think you’d appreciate it a lot, especially one part where the sound designer and one of the people on visuals kept trying to one up each other

32:00 there is a door partially blocked by a fallen over locker. If you jump on the locker and crouch you can go through the door revealing the test sight of the borealis, the boat referenced from HL2. You should do a HL2 series next. Edit: Maybe not that exact room but a similar one

JustMeAdam Yeah HL2 makes a lot of references to portal in the second episode where they talk about black Mesa being rivals to aperture. And I think Cave Johnson talks shit about black Mesa in one of his recordings.

18:20 A lot of Portal 2's puzzle elements have music to them if you listen carefully enough; The laser nodes, and laser receptacles play subtle music when they're activated, the hard light bridges when you're close enough to it, the aerial faith plates after jumping with them, the gels as you bounce or run along it, and the excursion funnel as you're inside it Subtle music cues like that are just one of the many reasons why i love Portal 2, besides the soundtrack itself, you have all these subtle music cues that tell you that you're doing things right and that you're progressing

I remember people praising Doom 2016's composer for making the music in a way that allows for jumping in between song sections or interspersing clips when certain actions are performed (glory kills come to mind) and he absolutely deserves the praise but I never knew that this was a thing in portal. Until today. And today was the day I learned to appreciate Portal and its makers even more. It's such a classic, especially the second game and I think everyone should get the chance to play it at least once in their lifetime. I just love this game and you can feel that the people at Valve do too.

I dropped my phone, and all I hear is "Oh, that's way too far-"

When I played through portal, honestly, my favorite part was the characters- I instantly fell in love with Wheatley- then I started really appreciating it’s visual design on my 2nd-4th semi-playthroughs (I never got to completing the game in these ones), and in my current one, I’m appreciating the sound and the character gesturing too- like- despite the characters having absolutely no arms, I can imagine Wheatley, during the whole “you’re a moron” thing, facing away, arms crossed in denial, looking back and squinting at Glados, before quickly turning around again like “nope- nope I’m not hearing it nuh uh-“ And the way the music is built around the situation too- like, as you fly around on faith plates and what-not, it adds it’s own little tune to the song- and it fits so well- almost everything adds that actually- I think going up to the laser beams has a noise that syncs to the music, and crouching on a hard light beam might too- And the song that plays when Wheatley gets transferred into the mainframe- it starts out cheery, then as the lift goes up, it gets a little more orchestrated, before switching to a heavy, dark feel as Wheatley decides he wasn’t done with you- just- aA

What I've always loved about Portal 2 was the music. Whenever you were flying in the air, depending on the music, it would change. Subtly or not with the momentum of your actions.
