When dry brushing your miniature, it's best to use a rubber or plastic palette instead of an absorbent material like paper towel or wood. The reason for this is that absorbent materials can soak up the water content in the paint, which can leave a chalky texture on your finished miniature. While this is great for achieving a stone look, it's not ideal for other textures. So, to avoid this, it's recommended to use a non-absorbent and non-porous palette for your dry brushing technique.

Hey for your metals you should really really really try a blue it works pretty good I did it on my slap chop Ironworkers I use gray for their armor so for Metallic effects I wanted some kind contrast between the two so I used space wolves grey it works really good but it goes on more like a shade so it takes more than one coat you can do it lights and it's nice but I found a lot situations going darker looks more realistic but then the lighter side of it gives a little bit more of a NMM kinda feel

Your slapchop videos are probably the easiest to follow for new painters. Your not a master painter, so its all plain english, and your just as confused as us most of the time, but you explain clearly, share the lessons you learnt and the results are solid and achievable. seeing your growth has been great and your love of painting growing warms my heart.

Such an accurate and well articulated comment. This hits the nail right on the head.

Here is some constructive criticism that will vastly improve your slap-chop; Your dry brushing is still holding you back! First step is to get a proper textured dry pallet to wipe the paint off. Don't use wood or even plastic! Get a small pad of rubber (about the size of a wet pallet), then take some old paint you don't care about and slather on some texture by making think blobs and lines. Let the paint dry completely and you are good to go. Always place your dry brush paint on the pad as it too will dry after use and simply add to the texture. Next step is to properly moisten your dry brush before dabbing it in the paint. Take a sponge, add 1-2 drops of water in the centre, then dab the brush tip into the damp section and wipe all excess water off on your hand. You will eventually get a feel as to how the moist the bristles should be, but it should be damp and cool against your skin. THEN, dab the brush in the paint and use the textured pallet to wipe away until the desired amount is left in the bristles. Lastly, your technique itself. Use circular swaps across the model and not so up and down left and right (chaotic). Think of it like wax on - wax off but clockwise, counter clockwise in little circles. Follow this advice and you will get the smoothest of dry brushing that doesn't look so chalky and rough. 😎

Cheers for the tips, I will take a look into a rubber pad as I always start painting miniatures in this manner so would soon have a rubber pad with plenty of hardened txtured paint on it, cheers again 🙂

@@MiniatureHobbyist wood is fine really, but try and seal it somehow. So it doesn't suck all the moisture out of the paint in your brush. That's what makes it look dusty sometimes.

@@MiniatureHobbyist What you can also use to wipe off the paint are riffled plastic cups which you prime black. That way you have a pretty good idea how moist the brush is and how much paint actually is on it too.

@@ScgMatke If you have a hot glue gun, just put stripes and ripples on some piece of plastic and prime over the whole thing.

Absolutely the best part about this video is just how much joy comes across. Its just so obvious how much you are enjoying doing what your doing and that is contagious. I have 20 figures left of my Lumineth army that have been sitting next to me unpainted, and videos like this just get me in the mood to sit down and finish them! Keep at it! I dont do a lot of slapchop, I tend to do your more standard painting. But I find your videos so relaxing and well put together. I like watching you get more excited to paint after you discovered slapchop. Someone here said you are easy to follow along with and I fully agree. So excited to watch you slapchop some orks again! Your stuff comes out VERY well by the way!

This helped me so much I have been buying miniatures recently and am really struggling with even just getting things off the sprue but always thought warhammer looked so cool as a kid having a slow walk thru like this really helps!

I have a beginner question. For the drybrush step, do you need to use like wash kind of paint or normal paint??

I've been doing the same type of progression. First AP speed paints, now some stippling with highlight colors. Try to drybrush the metallics on at some stage too. It gives an awesome look and feels really satisfying!

Love the video! Something that I'm going to try with this technique is to prime with something other than black, like a brown or red. I think it might add some subtle colour to the shadows and recesses, particularly on the skin.

Just learned about slap chop in the last 24 hours. Your videos have been really solid and it is cool to see someone go from loathing painting to loving it. That you're exploring new techniques to your painting style like stippling is the obvious sign of someone getting engaged. If I may offer a tip, even when you're stippling please thin your paints out. Especially Citadel paints. Something I still struggle with to this day is the idea that, "less is more." I believe if you thin your paints out you will have better control over your stippling and achieve an even better result. PLEASE keep making videos!

Going back in after a Slap Chop has done the lion's share of the work and hitting the highlights was a good call. The stipple reeally works well to add texture. Nice work on that ! Man, that rust looks like a must buy. I bet if you used some glue and fine sand to add places that were really going to bits, the rust would be even cooler. I enjoy your clear joy in the hobby. Not everyone doing videos radiates loving painting. Contrast / Speed paints have really got me loving painting again. I can layer paint, but having pre shading and washes followed by touch ups is getting me results I like more in less time and there is something to be said for seeing the stock of finished warbands or units pile up and be ready for play. The impact of fully painted armies and terrain at a "looks great from a yard off" feels more rewarding these days than painting for instagram clout.

I really really enjoy your videos for practical painting applications! You don't just "make things look easy". You discovered that indeed very easy technique for you and you wrapped your head around the perfect mediums for this and show it to the world. This is so good. Because it's real. We all want armies. Not just three, four display pieces. Despite what the Slapchop haters say, this is the most effective technique for people who simply don't have the time to paint the models to bring them to the tabletop. There are really just three channels I get back to for when I actually want to learn more about efficient and good painting: Miniature Hobbyist, MarcoFrisoniMJN and Geek Gaming Scenics

The next time you want to do some yellow stripes you could try to put first a warm brown so it covers better in next layers and also it leaves a better shadow for the yellow which over black it tends to get green

Looks great! If you want an uneven finish for things like hazard stripes, try using a sponge! Even a cut up washing up sponge will do well :)

Hello! A good tip for the dirty down rust is to put a bit of water with it, it makes the rust effect even stronger and realistic.

Those Stipled Hazard stripes look really good and really approachable compared to some of the other ways I've seen definitely gonna give that a try. 👍

Trousers mate! I do love the comparison at the end. They are both cool but the latest one is pretty amazing.

I think you're on the right track with your stippling and rough edge highlights! Because the overall texture of the model is so chalky from the drybrush the stippling and roughness just comes together with it and makes for a very stylistic looking orc! Your techniques work really well with each other. You're also right that this ends up looking very good for orcs.

Love the little details like the colors on the exposed wires in the cable and the flesh tone in the stapled scar on his arm ( must have been a recent injury that is still healing). His jacket had alot of texture from the stippling, where as his back pack and pants did not. But if that's his favorite jacket then it would have more wear than other items. Digging that stippled look

I've been testing recently with metallic paints (acrylics) by dry brushing them as an undercoat, and then using whatever colour over the top from the speed paints line, and the results come up pretty good. Especially if you don't have the speed paint metallics 😁 something every one should try I think

i like doing the slap chop, and then when the model is done on that step go and spend 15 mins or so doing some bright highlights, really makes them pop

*_Always_* do the lightest dry brush/edge highlight with the brightest silver/chrome *_After_* finishing rust effects. It will really enhance the effect and takes seconds extra. Otherwise really liking the look for the time investment.

Yeah I'm with you a hundred percent on the speedpaints, I was really hating and avoiding painting miniatures and then slap chop came along with army painter speedpaints and I just don't want to stop.

Love the look of the stippling. Have a set of those to paint. Was thinking slapchop sort of but for the skin going to do a black base, red drybrush and then a very light yellow zenithal drybrush. Was thinking about humans where you underpaint blue, yellow and red under the face's skin colour and wondering if we could do the same for orks as well.

I am love seeing youre painting progress, fun to see you improve. The dirty down stuff is best if used as the instructions say. They are on the side of the bottle. But what they say is heat the bottle so its warm to the touch (i use a hairdryer for a min or 2) and then heat the model with a hairdryer for a few sec and youll get a better looking result,
