@@TRU3CH405 it does look like there will be air between ends unless the penetration is further than it looks like it is in the pictures. Wonder why he didn't taper the end of the smaller segment with the grinder? Reduce the likelihood of voids

The weld is the weakest point. Instead of adding for of a weakpoint, just set it flat and weld the fucking thing. At least setting it flat will reduce the air pocket inside and give it a slight bit more reinforcement.

The weld could potentially be ‘MUCH’ stronger than the material boss. So that ‘slag’ you see him chipping off actually protects the weld material from oxidization. However, I’m with you he’s basically just tack welding with a very high amperage it looks like, all he needs to do is turn that down and drive the stick in there so he combines the material not just deposit it over it. It will hold weight just not the amount of weight that the stick is designed to hold.

On this joint yes the weld is the weakest. On a properly welded joint the weld should be the strongest point. Typically the filler metals as welded tensile strength is higher than the base material.

It seems to be true on the internet. Not so much in the real world. Having been in charge of testing welds in the field on pipeline construction (in my former life), there is a lot less BS flying because the Xray and bend testing don't blow smoke and don't talk smack.

However, with that said, you shouldn’t excuse “it working” with your terrible habits and generally bad welding skills. I mean, the guy could at least run a full bead instead of tack welding over slag like a complete novice 😂

Oh no, he's back to chicken peck welding. Btw... you do know that Rebar tends to get overly brittle when welded and too much stress can cause it to shatter. I personally broke a piece i had welded and one piece barely missed my face and stuck in the garage ceiling.

@@RoodalA1 there are a very small few scenarios where rebar can be welded successfully, none of them involve butt joining high tensile bar to a smaller ductile bar with a terrible attempt at stick welding where he's constantly lifting the arc and introducing inclusions into a weld that clearly failed to penetrate fully. Nobody's posting a video of how to "correctly" do something which should never be done in the first place

Yes but actually no - at least here. This is hilariously dangerous weld The idea behind making a gap is for the weld to be able yo fully propagate, you can see that this has a huge void as they tack weld all the way around

I am not sure elsewhere in the world. Where I come from, welding reinforcement bars is very rare. We connect reinforcement bars with couplers or lap joints for RC structures, because the bars used are not weldable, unless weldable ones are specified.

so many negative comments...easy way to solve the issue: bend test (even though you usually don't need to weld rebar ; just tie it ) Addendum: some exceptions exist and there is weldable rebar if needed.

So this is like basically, “I put the straw in the cup, I put a piece of tape over the straw, then here’s the final part you don’t want to miss! I poke a hole in the tape and I sip from the straw, all done!”

Concrete steel is typically called re-bar Reinforcing bar (or steel). For the most part I think everyone knows what rebar is, as well as the colloquial term (rebar), so you saying concrete steel is a bit funny considering the video is funny in itself for what NOT to do when joining rebar

Yep, absolute rubbish weld full of inclusions and it'll be significantly weaker than the surrounding steel which by the dots on the bar looks to be high tensile rebar which shouldn't be welded in the first place 🙄

If you pull enough gap to get full pen... maybe it's slightly better. This was just purposely putting a void between the members being "joined." Much weaker than a joint with faying surfaces.

Welding steel bars lowers it's strength.

I would think with all the pro welders in the comments we would only have welding content on KZread. We don’t though. Maybe you all are as pro as your pretend degrees.

This is so wrong. The only way to weld joint, as per US standard, is to overlap the join by 40xDiameter, then weld entire thing. Your work is endangering real life. The building could collapse and someone might die because of you.

My favorite part is where he left a MASSIVE air pocket immediately after saying some idiot thing about this technique being proper, first of all get a fucking proper grind on BOTH PARTS then support them so you don't weld up a noodle

@@stevenbuck07 .....no...the weld can not just flow into a cavity it has a specific depth of penetration relative to wire thickness material thickness and energy delivery that material is solid and he did not grind a bevel to allow penetration to the center more he never cleaned his parts meaning that the weld has very low pen as it would sit on top of the non conductive oxides as opposed to allowing the weld to follow the flow of energy into the 2 steel parts further more there was no cavity to fill that parts are physically pressed to each other where there is no way for weld to "fill" the non space....thats why...have you ever used a welder? To have it end up correctly its %90 prepareing %8 measuring and less than %2 welding because every decision before the weld is what will decide if your brain is for "decorative purposes only" or you can actually produce useful pieces 😀
