​@offdutyjie EY Parts has cheap Chinese-made Thunderbirds for $50 each. They're properly made with bar magnet pole pieces too. Can't vouch for any direct comparison but $100 a set is a much more reasonable experiment than $500. If you buy the pickup ring, it hides the round tabs on the pickguard but one corner on the neck pickup ring will hang just a touch over the edge of the pickguard. Or you can get a new guard cut. Or accept the empty round tabs around the pickups.

Now I'm imagining how a Bass VI would look and sound with a trio of Thunderbird pickups, maybe with a phase switch for the middle pickup . . .

If I may, I'd suggest putting your phase switch on the neck or bridge, and using a 5-way switch and a Frailin style blend pot. :) Neck and bridge out of phase sounds cool, and you can get a cool range of tones in or out of phase using the blend knob, including in the "2 and 4" switch positions. This is pretty simple to implement and gives tons of useful tones. Imho, a middle pickup out of phase with neck or bridge can sound too thin to be usable. Ymmv.

Yeah Curtis - those tbirds sound great! Loving the humbucker sound on the goldfoils too! Soo much to consider!

That bridge DeArmond with gain playing chordal stuff sounds GREAT! That would cut through so well in a mix but doesn't sound too harsh at all. Great video Mike!

I have a set of Novaks in my jaguar that sound absolutely beautiful! those thunderbird pickups are equally stunning!

Came here for the gold Foils.....stayed longer than I thought for the Thunderbirds. I'm hot on a trail for some gold foils... new project in the works. Great review Mike!

Thunderbirds are go! Excellent demo and super sounding. Great match for a jazzmaster.

this hurts my soul.. Especially being from Canada. I was thinking of throwing a pair in my JMJM but cant justify it since I got the JM for 500 bucks lol.

I was having fun just watching you have fun. Love your channel. Makes me want to sell all of my non offsets and replace them with Jazzmasters.

I was completely unsold on those thunderbird pickups until that final jam. WOW.

Brilliant demonstration of how to make art with these tools, you are the best Mike. I should buy you a coffee Sir.

I only recently got a MIJ 60s Jazzmaster - my first offset. The standard pups onboard mine sound good to me but these Thunderbirds and the Antiquity's and other pickups you demo sound fabulous. Nice playing too Mike.

@@Puisheen - Thanks for all the time stamps and the side by side of the goldfoil positions. I'm convinced on those. If he does a bass version, I'm totally down too. I have a parts P-bass that would love to have a mustang 3 way switch on it that gets 3 tones out of a single pickup!

Both sets sound amazing! I have one of his guyatone style Gold foils in the neck of my tele and I’d be interested in trying out that GF humbucker there too

I liked both of those sets of pickups!

I really loved those gold foils, but good lord, those T-Birds. Amazing.

The look of those thunderbirds are just amazing. The look of the gold foils are just amazing. The sound of the thunderbirds are amazing. The sound of the gold foils are amazing. Personally I lean towards the gold foils because of all the tonal options. But dang those those thunderbirds look like straight fire on your guitar.

@@Puisheen I could tell, your enjoyment came through loud and clear. It's reaffirmed for me that Novaks are going in my AmPro when I get around to my winter project of routing it out to take a rhythm circuit and whatever other Frankenstein mods I can throw at it.

I've been kind of binging on all things gold foil lately, but I liked the Thunderbirds just as much. Really fine sounding pickups!

I’ve been interested in T-foils and that PU is the best option I’ve heard. But I’m all about the T-Bird. Expected it to handle gain well but the clean was just right. Menacing as you said.

Great video... I loved the gold foil. I put Lollar gold foil in my build. I also find it interesting how the looks of the pickups play into the hole experience... would really ugly pu’s that sound great work...??? I don’t think so... 😎... but both the gold foil and the thunderbirds looked pretty cool.

Mike, this was fantastic, but you’re doing my wallet a MAJOR disservice here. The Gold Foils looked and sounded fantastic, and super versatile to boot... but those Tbirds... I feel like fit the Jazzmaster style and function extremely well. I think I might have to bypass the “traditional” Jazzmaster choice and go with what I was hearing here

Did you check out the resistance on these pickups? I'm curious as to what the Thunderbirds measure out at and how they compare to WRHBs, the "other" giant-bobbin, magnetic-core, fully-covered humbucker.

Yep, those Thunderbird Pups rip. So much clarity and note definition. Really loved those clean tones. The Guyatone gold foils sounded great as well, really liked that extra top end in them

i love putting my guitar into a dirty amp and cleaning up the sound with the volume knob. i've also heard that gold foils don't clean up as well as most other pickups. do the curtis novak ones clean up nicely, or would that be an issue for a player like me? they sound killer either way! great demo.

That’s funny. I had a thunderbird pickup in my Stratocaster for awhile. Not because of any tonal choices I was making. I just broke my strat’s bridge pickup and was in a pinch. Sounded alright to my ear.

Those tbird pickups are C R U S H I N G in the best possible way. You'd better believe I'm saving my pennies for a proper jazzmaster and some Novak T-bird pickups as we speak.

For a shoegaze-y kinda thing what would you pick between the normal jazz master pickups and the thunderbirds?

Those birds are incredible, but I wish you’d spent more time with the Gold foils. I have an hh player Jazzmaster that I love how it plays, but I hate humbuckers. Those could be what I’m looking for, but it’s hard to tell from the short snippet you gave us.

Did Curtis prewire those pickguards for you or was it Rothstein's or a third party like that. Great demo!

Both sound great, the Thunderbird pickups speak to me. I wonder how they would compare with Firebird and Wife Range Humbuckers, since they are practically a hybrid of both.

Dude, they basically whoop ass all over everything else. What’s not to get? All the best top end frequencies and the low end to go along with. Like trying to compare soprano to baritone; a very clean baritone.

This is awesome! Quick question, while I'm still watching: are those slider switches all the same on upper and lower circuit of a Jaguar and also mustang? I have a lot to learn but I did just get a used VM Jazzmaster. And I also have an SX SJM that I want to jaguarize.

Jaguar and Jazzmaster rhythm circuits are visually identical, though the cap value can differ between them. Mustang switching is on/off/Out Of Phase for each pickup, so that's different. In this video, only the T-Bird pickup guard had the Rhythm circuit; the Foils had lead circuit controls only

Mike! quick question. Your guitars' pickguard screw holes ever go bad and don't screw anymore after all your tweaking? Or their wood is so good you can simply screw and unscrew away to infinity without ever worrying?

Oh that happens to every guitar eventually, and the wood on Artoo is incredibly soft. I plan to fill a few of those screws soon.
