NOTION vs ROAM vs OBSIDIAN vs REMNOTE (How to choose the BEST FIT note taking app for you!)

🌲 Build a bulletproof learning system ➔ www.cajunkoi.com/landings/stu...
We get asked about the best roam alternative (roam research alternative), but that's a hard question to answer because people use it for different reasons. So the question becomes what is the best note taking app for you? That's also a loaded question because the best note taking app for students is not the same as the best note taking app for productivity is not the same as the best note taking app for personal knowledge management...In this video, we give you a comparison analysis of the four most asked about note taking apps right now: notion vs roam, roam vs remnote, roam vs obsidian, remnote vs obsidian, obsidian vs remnote (the combinations are many), but when it comes down to it, there should only be ONE right fit for you.
🙏 Thanks for watching!

Sounds like Obsidian just needs to get better, or maybe have a baby with Notion, and then it would be what I am looking for. I.e. A productivity & knowledge app that is designed to store your data locally, or on a [local] NAS storage device you own, so we don't have to worry about e2e encryption (just https and local storage encryption), to store all "notes" one takes in life digitally (learning, research, projects, etc). Oh, and be cross-platform!

Important, Obsidian now has the possibility to collapse bullet points, and chapters. Also, Obsidian uses Markdown, not plain text, so your text WILL NOT be chaotic as shown in the video.

All of them are good for note taking, organizing and reviewing. Have tried all of them together with anki and quizlet. But what made me transfer to Remnote is the ability of it to make flash cards at the get go. Since time is very important and is limited especially in college, being able to organize your notes and review immediately using active recall is definitely a must.

Obsidian technically has a very open and flexible collaboration capability. Because the underlying "vault" sits on top of a file directory you can achieve the following: - access on mobile via something like Ulysses or IA writer. - collaborate with others by storing a vault in a cloud file storage solution or even github - collaborators can choose whatever markdown editor they are comfortable with so if they don't like obsidian they could collab and spend their whole time in Ulysses or IA writer

From my opinion, Roam cons are: 1- you may lose data since many users report that. 2- it is not sustainable since they ask for $15 per month. RemNote cons are: 1- small bugs there and here are a lot. 2- the layout looks not smooth. 3- They don’t have active community. Obsidian cons are: only they don’t have block referencing, but they the option that I have chosen because: 1- free 2- local 3- great graph view.

I 100% agree with your points, however, the biggest con for me with Obsidian is that it feels awkward to use. The systems own "friction" was something I never overcame and that caused me to use it far less than I would have liked. Roam seems to have removed all of the friction for me and a tool that I love to use trumps nearly everything for me. I will pay for a good tool, and I am sure over time with their level of success they will address the bugs/data loss. (I actually had dataloss and spoke with the founder himself about the issue, they do care and are trying to address how quickly they are growing).

Thank you for a very useful comparison, which I first watched back in fall 2020, when I began considering a tool for my studies at law school. I am glad that I chose RemNote for my studies and it has helped me tremendously. I have recently begun toying with Obsidian for PKM. Both RemNote and Obsidian have come a long way since this video. However, other than built-in active recall and spaced repetition, RemNote still has one extremely useful feature that is not yet possible with Obsidian, namely portals, probably because Obsidian is based on markdown text rather than rems (or blocks in the case of Roam).

This is a terrifically informative video, with clear previews and outlines - makes me think that the both of you are experienced teachers! I did find my attention wandering at times, even though I really wanted to listen attentively, which I think is connected to how both of you don't vary your intonation or sentence cadence throughout the video, which is pretty long to speak without some varying expressiveness.

@@KoiAcademy Thanks guys! I am currently testing RemNote by using it for all my notes this week. One thing I liked about Roam Research is how it automatically created pages when I put in a topic. I assume I would use Tags on RemNote to replicate this functionality? Also Roam was very focused on a daily focus, but with RemNotes ability to create folders and documents, do you still find creating a document for each day useful?

  • @KoiAcademy

    @KoiAcademy

    4 жыл бұрын

@@GarlandCoulson Yes, every single bullet point you make in RemNote automatically becomes its own page, just click on the bullet to jump into that page. And yes, our favorite way to use RemNote is the daily document (daily focus). Whenever you create a new document in the sidebar next to "Document" you will automatically create a new document with today's date on it. Def recommend checking this tutorial series as well, you will find that RemNote and Roam are more similar than most people think: bit.ly/RemNoteTutorials

I personally use Obsidian, however there’s a good chance that I’ll be moving over to Remnote instead to capitalize on those spaced repetition and active recall features ;) perhaps I’ll use Obsidian for casual note taking, but Ive always desired the ability to intertwine jotting down notes with effective study methods. Also, amazing video! Based on the diversity of conclusions in the comments on which software would be best for the commenter, you guys seemed to nail down a factual, unbiased perspective :D

You have great videos. Knowledge Management is also about recalling what you have - so if spaced repetition is important then go with RemNote. But then the next question would be if I have invested time and effort in one and then an alternative application meets your needs and some more - can one salvage that work and move it (with ease) into another app which has the features you desire?

  • @KoiAcademy

Hi harry, nice to hear from you again! I think you’re referring to whether the apps can export their data, and the answer is yes. All 4 apps have data export capabilities, but whether or not they can import each other’s data easily is the challenge. When you import data to another platform, it will not be exactly the same and formatting may be different. I believe they are all working to improve that function to make integration between programs easier.

Useful review. I've been experimenting with note-taking systems since the '70s, and always end up back with Buzan-style mindmaps. Mapping forces you to process the incoming knowledge proactively as you work out the associations you want and try to make sense of the ideas. Plus the keywords and graphical nature of the approach assist with overview. And good mindmapping software allows for linking between maps and nodes. These associative apps aren't a new idea - see TheBrain, for example, which has been around for years. But they are very text dense, and don't force you to process your thinking or to create overview, and you end up with a very loosely organised web of atomic snippets. In the end, all knowledge is hierarchical - mindmapping and associative noting are both based on outlining under the hood. The question is, which encourages the clearest, most efficient thinking habits? For me, it's mindmapping all the way.

@@juanantoniogonzalez8729 Depends. I tend to do all first-draft maps by hand - it feels more direct, with no cognitive load from the software. If it's a quick and dirty map for immediate use (eg for a blog post) I leave it at that. If it's something I might use longer term for reference or revision, I'll often do a cleaned up draft in Ayoa (much the best software, in my view, but I hate their pricing model).
