Nothing Happened...
I recently went through a preparedness exercise thanks to a lot of alerts and warnings regarding a severe weather emergency. And it taught me a lesson...
With all of the warnings, alerts and updates surrounding SHTF prepping that we are exposed to everyday, it can be difficult to remain motivated when nothing happens. And sometimes, that's just what happens. Nothing. After going through that exact scenario regarding an extreme weather event here in my area, I thought about how it was very similar to what we talk about here in the prepper community. And of course, just because nothing happened doesn't mean I will ignore future warnings about the weather. But I could see why it might make someone feel that way.

Have you experienced something similar in your life? I remember growing up in Florida and having hurricanes miss us even though we did all the prep. I also remember hurricanes suddenly turning into us and everyone being caught off guard. And most people, will most definitely be caught off guard. Back in 2003 we had brief power failure for three days, in Toronto. None of us had any food at all stacked, not even water. Next day my friends took me shopping, I bought something stupid.. it was a havoc in store, three hours wait in line, cash only and so on.. That was a freaking good lesson. Now, thanks to you and other preppers, slowly settling my self for 6+ months food, water filtration, still got to make birch tar..(I got only tin cans, no steel, haven’t tried yet). medical and clothing wise (some information from medieval research is useful also) Imagine, 10-15 years into #shtf, what are we going to wear??? Biggest dilemma and most important so far is a community.

Grew up in Florida as well, and seen how unprepared people can be. I learned a lot about preparation while growing up there, and also learned the last place you ever want to be is in a FEMA line waiting for their hand outs.

I don't see "nothing happened" as a disappointment. It's far and away the preferred outcome. I don't want to have to use my preps. Ever. Nor do I think it's healthy or realistic to live in a hyper-vigilant state to the exclusion of daily living. The skills and supplies should be maintained but largely in the background. The storm that misses is a good opportunity to do a sort of post-game and make sure you have what you need, you can find it, it's in good working order etc.

We lost our home in 2017 in Santa Rosa California to a wildfire. 20 min warning to evacuate. Lost a second home to wildfire in 2019. Lost access to 3rd home in Oct 2021, but we were able to evacuate most our belongings. With trucks packed we just moved here to Idaho. Best decision ever. Mild winters and little chances of disaster. But yes, more prepared than ever. We are working on expanding our community to survive about anything. ThNks for all the knowledge you have shared to help us. We're very grateful for you.

Wise advice. I have a friend who lived through the TX Freeze Out a couple of years ago, knows about TPTB fanning the flames of WWIII, food shortages, etc, and won't prep because nothing is happening and she doesn't want clutter in her house. I'm almost 2000 miles away, cannot help her. It's really hard to watch this, the "nothing happened" bias is strong. When it actually does happen, it will be too late.

That was a good practice run. There was a time when i was a kid growing up in Iowa, a huge storm came through another town, taking out a portion of that town. Many years later, I was 19 and watched tornados surrounding the town i was in. These tornados went in a clockwork formation around that town. Never actually hitting it, tearing through the farmland. You never know how a storm will act. Just like those who are in the world. we will not know until things happen, if they will happen or where they will happen, even what will actually happen. All we can do is use the information that we have at the time to the best of our ability. This is why it is so important to seek information and then decern that information to the best of our abilities. You, sir. did right by your family. Familiy first. The heck with what others thinks.

So, this is a time to get your own boat radar and make your own determination if a storm situation is on a collision course with your house. You can also use the radar to determine is somebody is carrying any metal longer than 12 inches towards your house. You can also see cars two miles out. These are the advantages of living in a crop field.

I stay prepared, so if anything had happened, it would have been handled.

I live in tornado alley, and I've seen a day this year that tornado outbreaks was high, and only 4 tornadoes came from those storms. We've had 104 tornadoes this year, so far. 34 in 1 day, on April 27th, and they predicted that pretty much on the money. Texas is a bit ahead at 112 so far. I take them serious, but I'm ready. All my firearms, ammo, 2 sleeping bags, 2 wool blankets, food, water, small generator go in the above ground shelter every spring, and stay there till mid June, maybe early July. A pain to put that in there, I built shelving to store it. TV in there, battery radio, starlink. What a pain each year to put that crap in there. The NWS is not always on the ball, I've saw tornadoes on the ground for up to 3 minutes before they put out alerts, and some have not even made the tornado warning. I watch to see if storms heading my way have a history of producing funnels or tornadoes, go from there.

Here in nebraska theres either big hype for nothing or a discreet cell blows up. Max Velocity covered a storm by Whitman, NE the almost didnt get warned on what turned out to be an active almost EF4. Thwy went with a 3 because a sub par construcyion building was hit and they couldnt make that fit the metrics.

Those of us who grew up before Al Gore put all these pipes together simply called these events "today's weather". Blizzards, tornadoes, hurricanes, extreme temperatures... All that was just normal everyday life. Here it is kids, grab the radio, candles and let's play a board game.

I don't listen to the weather guy on our channel 12 anymore. He's an alarmist! But my friend up in NY state listens to him, and never knew that overnight could be up to 6" of snow an hour. I knew that, but we were only predicted about a foot of snow. I listen to NOAA. My friend woke up to 44" of snow! Anyway, I do certain things before a potential power outage, 99-percent of the time the power stays on, but that 1-percent, I'm really happy to have done a few things in advance, especially concerning taking care of livestock, having plenty of ice for coolers, water tanks, extra buckets of water, that sort of thing. If the power is only going to be off for a few hours, I'm not messing with a generator running to pull water out of the well. TIP: Have water in a container with a spigot so you can put it on the edge of the sink to wash your hands.

Where I live, we have air sirens that used to go off ONLY if there was a known tornado incoming in the area. Someone in their "infinite wisdom" changed that so that the sirens go off now to ANY bad weather. The stupid sirens are always going off and I have no clue what to think, other than it's bad weather. Aw well, thought I'd share and glad ur ok.

I'm grateful my old town did that. Sustained at 45 I think it was, sirens went off..even if that's all it was was wind. Why? Because "just wind" can do damage. Strong storms can do damage. Hail can do damage. Derechos can do damage. It doesn't have to be only tornadoes. I've seen it MANY times.

I agree brother, however I wish that some notable youtube prepper channels would tone down their clickbait titles. Like NUKES INBOUND, or ITS OVER, or WW3 IS HAPPENING NOW. Those people get the audience worked up day after day, to the point where many commenters seem like their in a near panic.
